Why no PlayTV in the US??

After reading this article i was very jealous becuase this would be an awesome accessory for any PS3 owner in the US!

Am i reading that right? Its capable of HD mpeg2 recording, any awesome movies or tv shows in HD can be then jumped over to memory stick ect? WOW, once BBC HD and Channel 4s HD service kick off, this thing should be amazing, 350-500gb Hard Drive here i come.

The PS3 is turning into an absolute multimedia powerhouse.

Divx Playback, Blu Ray playback out of the box, and a soon to be released TV Tuner/Recorder thats HD capable?

You guys don't fell any remorse for the delays games have until they get to Europe and you certainly don't feel bad for us when you guys get games that never get to Europe.

We always had to wait months after JP release. So what? Besides, I think it has more to do with the EU digital cable system than anything else.

Im just wondering when it will be released they said first quarter 2008 last year right ?. So that doesn't give them a lot of time.

Funny thing is, we Europeans (the REAL and true ones) don't whine about getting stuff later. Now that it's something like this. people cry.. again. Am i seeing a pattern here?

You are kidding right? I have only read about 10,000 posts COMPLAINING about price, delays in games, lack of demos etc etc

PlayTV wouldn't work in the US b/c our local tv stations haven't even switched to broadcasting a digital signal yet. Thats not required until Feb 21st 2009. Which means, that is the EARLIEST PlayTV will reach the US.

It sucks that the US is so slow on technological innovations.

Yes there will also be converter boxes you can buy for your older TV. But I suggest just making the jump to a HDTV.

Yea, after that date, Local channels (Fox, ABC, NBC, PBS, etc) switch to digital signals, which will require you to either have a HDTV, or buy a converter box to convert the signal so your analoge tv can read it.
I think the government is going to give out rebates to help people pay for these.

This wont affect channels provided to you through Cable or Satellite.

WRONG - Feb 2009 is when it is mandatory to be on in digital and analog is SUPPOSED to end. However, many and I mean TONS of local channels are out there in digital and HD broadcast already. And it should be able to work for all channels received through cable.

And for those talking about the converter boxes you request your 1-2 free boxes at the link below.

So there is no reason why this doesn't come out here. If anything they could up the price and do a analog and digital tuner... Furthermore a lot of people are using digital cable boxes and while a quam tuner might be required - once again charge a few more dollars for it.... not like Sony tv's don't have it built in...

I really don't see why they wouldn't release it her now. There is no technical reason I can think of - I am more wondering if it is related to copyright etc since the broadcast flags limiting copying etc aren't activated and Sony isn't ready to take on that battle that might ensue....

Finally - isn't it funny how Sony has no problem with you copying material onto usb etc since that isn't THEIR product... we all remember the fiasco when they tried to protect their products, but here they don't care :) - just a funny thing

Erhm, the only posts i read where someone, or something, whined about prices was back when the PS3 was launched in the US. Topics were like: "OMG! $600 !!!! OMGOMGOMG 'CRYCRYCRYCRY'" .. And then it launched in Europe and the price (in Denmark) for the console was $800+ and the games are like 75-80$. Not a single topic i read said "OMG! 'crycry' games in Europe are much more expensive" or "The PS3 costs $800 where i live!! 'crycry' " .. So you kinda failed. .. And again, the true Europeans would whine about stuff like demos that often, especially after they figured out that, OH you can make a US PSN account or a Japanese :D. Personally i never whined about the price either, because i have a job and $800 is like.. "woo, $800 right in my pocket.. meh" .. Read up on the older topics and notice that it's not the Europeans crying about the price ;)
