Basically because they'd rather you give them more money by getting a PS2, a PS2 memory card, and a DualShock 2 if you want to do multiplayer on it. Contrast that with a b/c PS3, where you can make a virtual memory card on the PS3's hard drive and use a DualShock 3 to play the games. Supposedly it's a cost-saving measure for newer PS3s, but it's mainly so they can keep PS2 sales high.MAILER_DAEMON
This. Yeah, their punks over at sony. But what can I say, they got MGS4.

For some reason I never picked up a ps2 and I'd really like to play through the first two God of War game. I've got enough system as it is, there's no way the wife would allow another one and I don't think I have connections on my tv for another input source.

Absolutely. My wife won't even sit in the room when I play. I also have a 6 year old daughter which means no M rated games until she's in bed.

I bought the PS3 with BC and have only used it twice. It's just too hard and too ugly to play PS2 games after you've played PS3 games. No going back for me. Personally I'd rather have saved the $200 than had BC Completely disagree. Use it all the time. First game I even played when I got it was GoW2 while ninja gaiden, motorstorm, and CoD4 just sat there. With the PS2 library and its classics I find it hard to say that someones "not missing much". Thats crazy IMO.

I can't even keep up with the games coming out for PS3 so it's just hard for me to want to play PS2 :) I've spent so much time on Fallout3, Little Big Planet and Rockband2 that I still have Resistance2 and Valkyria Chronicles to play and now Killzone2 is coming out.
If anyone is looking for a backwards compatible 60gb or 80gb system, go to the Gamestop website... you can order refurbished systems and they don't cost some ridiculous price like on Ebay or Amazon... I'm pretty sure the 60gb's are $430 and the 80gb's are $450.
I think an extra $30-50 is worth it for a fully functional system, instead of the crap Sony is trying to pass off as a Playstation 3 now.
I could be way off here but I personally think its due to
1. cost
2. still supporting the PS2, which is a good thing
3. I do believe the majority of consoles which failed in some way were the ones with BC although I don't know for sure but it just seems alot of the posts I read with people saying their PS3 died had the older BC models.

Wouldn't it have been better to never introduce the idea? Maybe, just maybe, they took it away because morons kept complaining about the cost?

I dont get it, i was able to snag a MGS4 BC PS3 back in aug and i read that Software BC doesnt cost sony nothing? If that true, why take that away. Also sony made a bad move because i think they would of sold more PS3s if had BC. BC will also mean PS3 ppl buying new PS2 games. Isnt RPGs still going strong on PS2?

And for those that doubt that it cuts the cost of the PS3 here is a comparison between the two pieces of hardware.

As the helpful Rambus representatives explained to me, their business is the design and implementation of integrated memory and chips in various consumer electronics, including a particular Sony videogame console. They had helped Sony to create the original hardware for the PS3 launch hardware, and later, had also helped refine the PS3 motherboard into a more efficient and streamlined system.
In this photo, the Rambus rep is pointing to a launch-era PS3 motherboard; that particular area on the left is essentially a PS2, contained within the PS3 architecture — the fabled "Emotion Engine." The board above it is a much more recent iteration of the PS3 hardware. You can see, it's quite a bit more compact, made smaller by the conspicuous removal of the leftmost portion of the board.
