What was so bad about Resistance 2 that everyone hated so much. Other than the fact that the story mode coop was taken out and there was no weapon wheel, the game remained like the first one. It had more varied environments than the first game did. The new weapons they added were cool. They expanded the number of people that could play online, and they added an eight player coop which was pretty fun. The only things that brought the game down were the not so intense boss battles and no vehicle sections. I don't really understand the hatred over a few changes to otherwise more of the same thing. It had larger scaled battles and brighter colors. I think people are being too picky or are purists in some way or another

It was generic, and didn't quite deserve that 9.0 in many people's eyes. The story was a little messy too. Competitive mode was nothing special either.

Co-op was great though.

Overall, it lost its distinct Resistance feel and became a red headed COD-GeoW child.

Same way i feel about the game. It was EXTREMELY generic. It was a very plain FPS game. The multiplayer was also very boring and it was very dull. I got bored of team deathmatch after just an hour.

I agree with what everyone has said so far. The first game was fun, but it got boring really quickly and Resistance 2 didn't do much to change that (though an entirely new co-op mode that didn't follow the campaign was a step in the right direction). In the end it really does far too much like a strange fusion of elements from Gears Of War, Call Of Duty and Halo. All fine games, but Resistance loses something trying to tie them all together.

I liked R2 (nvr played the 1st) and i played a lil campaign then mp. I kinda liked the mp, but i felt that there was no need to come back. Nothing forcing me like to be like wow i wanna play this again. Same goes fro Killzone 2....

Where are elements of Gears of War? You do realize that one could say that the first game is just a hyrbrid of the old school shooters like Doom, Blake Stone, the first Wolfenstein, the Abyss, Quake 1 and 2, and Turok 1 and 2. All of those games had life bars and Turok and a weapon wheel as well. You could choose your own weapon in the rest of those shooters too. So either way your getting a clone of something according to what you say. I respect your opinion and others feel the same way as you but I am just pointing out that a lot of things in Resistance 1 also were in a lot of other shooters too, so you can't say that Resistance 2 was generic because it copied other games when the first game also had things that previous shooters had as well.

The first one did not have a lot of bad guy variety either. I am just wondering why the first one is praised so golden and the second one is shunned. No one really gives a valid reason as to why the second one is worse other than that it is like other shooters. The first game was like other shooters as well, so that is not good excuse for not liking the second one.

Resistance 1 was a well thought out alternate history story and it had a more gothic theme. Resistance 2 they went to mario land and made everything look crappy and toony. Oh and the ending is FAIL.

Ididnt hate it but i expected more from it; i wish the big bosses could ve been something ala shadow of the collosus, the enemy AI was worse than the ones in R1. The online is one of the best you could find on the ps3 tho.

I thought it was better than FOM. I would sink far more hours into an online co-op mode than a co-op campaign anyway so I think they made the right choice.

Resistance 2 begins great, but after the first chapter i do not remember WHY i did anything. Or what i did, other than a spaceship level with the invisible enemies. I don't think there was any writing other than a 20 words synopsis for each chapter and the transitional scenes which were random as to why the game should proceed that way. Halo 3 for instance - i am no fanboy - was shorter but made sense.

R2 was the first game I got for the PS3, so I'll always have a soft spot for it. for what it was, I thought it was fun and a worthy alternative to the Killzone and COD.

Haven't played it in a while tho, might pick it up again. is there still much activity online or is it pretty much dead now?

As many people stated above, it was nothing special. It was a bland, by the numbers FPS. So what that it had such large multiplayer lobbies, being generic these days wont cut it. On thing i DID enjoy during the single player campaign was the radio broadcasts...that gave the story a bit more bite.

It was garbage, the first Resistance was so much better, mainly because the second just felt.. different I guess you could say, it did not have the magic R:FoM had.

Probably the biggest disappointment this generation for me. Especially after original Resistance was great. R2 was basically another plain FPS game and had completely different direction that made R1 an excellent and unique experience.

The story narrator was completely gone, weapon wheel was strategic and important part of the game was also gone, basically the whole mechanics in R2 single player were plain and uninteresting, it's like completely different team was working on it. I still don't understand why so many changed had been made.

Resistance 2 had no love put into it like previous game, it was just slapped together and became another genetic shooter with no direction.. Resistance 1 was much, much better experience.

Overrated. Co op was fun but the whole game just felt uninspired. It took elements from other shooters and executed them badly.

well i would not go so far as to say i hated it.But i was very unimpressed. it had a ton of hype ect and for me just didnt even come close to liveing up to it. It was better than the first imo but like the first it just felt and looked very generic. To me it was just a plain fun of the mill FPS. Not a bad game just not a very good one imo. the one thing i can say is that iirc it has a deceantly long SP campaign. Iv def played much better and i wish i had waited till it hit the 19.99 or maybe 29.99 mark before i bought it like i did with the first game. .

While the single player wasn't as good as the first one I still think because of the incredible online multiplayer it ended up being a great game.

I haven't had my PS3 that long and I recently played Resistance 1&2 back to back and here's the differences I noticed (In singleplayer) that could answer your question:

Resistance 1 was more of a throwback to the old school FPS games IE Doom, Turok, Quake, etc. Instead of this "Choose your weapon" thing that exists now, you got to keep all your weapons. You also had a health bar, which made the game a little more challenging and enemies a bit more threatening. The story was told in an interesting fashion and the art design, time period, Chimera, were all original. The game had charm.

Resistance 2 abandoned that in favor of a more modern shooter. Gone were all the weapons, the health was substituted for the freaking regenerating health thing that's oh so prevalent nowadays, and the unique storytelling. There was also less of it, it seemed. There were some enemies in Resistance 1 that changed up the pace at least a little bit. Like the Slipskulls, who jumped around shooting at you while they latched onto walls. The weapon selection wasn't as great either. Some guns, like the Auger, got an upgrade and made the combat more fun but other guns, like the Halestorm from the first game, were replaced with things like the Wraith, a pretty generic chain gun that every FPS has.

While I, personally, really enjoyed Resistance 2 because of the things it did right I think it's pretty clear why it was treated as a disappointment.

Back when I loved resistance it had 80 player online multiplayer (they dropped it down to 60) and your buddy could play with you on the same console. The game was immensely fun and it's all I wanted to do was play that game. Single player was nothing special, but multiplayer was just awesome. It's easy for people to look back at a game and say "it wasn't that great," but that's why games get reviewed when they are released, not 5 years later.

It was completely different to the great standards Fall of Man set. Graphics were mediocre, gameplay felt like a First Person Ratchet and Clank game but with awful blood effects, story was poorly told with rubbish characters, and the graphics were too bright and colourful

Everyone praises the first one like all get up and go but a lot hate the second one with a passion. They changed some things around yes, but not to the degree as what I am hearing. A lot of people say that the second one looked bad as was generic but no one says explicitly why. R2's graphics are better than the first. It has more color than the first one making things look better. Claims of it being of rip off are weird since you could say the first one was a rip off of all the old school shooters like doom, wolfenstein, and turok. I don't really get how people can say the first game was unique when it technically was not. People's complaints about the second game could easily have been said about the first one. The only thing I can think of is since that the first game played old school, it was seen as unique because people have not done it a while. Resistance 2 modernized everything since people have been playing games like Halo, and Call of duty for a long time, they saw it as generic.

Bad story, bad characters, meh graphics, boring level design, and mediocre gameplay. The only thing that was halfway decent was co-op, and that wasn't enough to save it, I'm afraid.

I agree 110% it was a generic attempt at a sequel. Loved the first for it's simplicity and splitscreen co-op. There needs to be more games like Resistance 1.
