PLEASE help me!

I have a 1080p HD Tv and am using the Sony HDMI cable. I set the PS3 to maximize at 1080p. Here's the weird part:

The PS3 menu and userbar screen is in 1080p. But when I play a game it automatically goes to 720p! I've tested it time and again and am making sure to put in games that list 1080p on the back of the case. Even God of War III lists 1080i and it still goes to 720p. WHAT DO I DO!

Any help would be mega appreciated and thanks for your time :)

Most games are 720p. There are some that are 1080p.

I'm not sure off hand at which ones are. I'm sure someone will be along shortly and provide a list for you.

Oh. REALLY? Well as much as that sucks I guess at least I can take solace in the fact that my system isn't acting up. But how weird? Why would that be? Especially when it says it runs in 1080?

And thanks for your help too guys.

even if they say they are 1080p, a lot of times they are actually just an upscale of 720p, nothing more

If it says 1080i on the back of the case then its not true 1080. You have to force your PS3 to play it in 1080i if you want, although there is no real big difference between 720p and 1080i. Goto your display settings on your PS3 and only have 1080i selected. Otherwise your PS3 will select 720p for games that say 1080i.

If the game says 1080p on the case, it should run in 1080p. You should phone Sony and ask them why it isn't. There might be a problem with your PS3.

Odds are there aint no problem with his PS3. People's TV's are different and react different so it could be a multitude of things. I doubt Sony can do anything about your TV not running in 1080P ..lol come on people be foreal!!

WTF are you talking about? The resolution is controlled by the PS3, not the TV. If his TV is capable of showing 1080p, and the game supports 1080p, the PS3 should display it in 1080p. If it doesn't, there's a problem with the PS3. There are no other factors, TV's don't "react different", whatever that means. TC, gamer082009's comment is a prime example of why you should phone Sony. At least then you might get some useful information.

Theres absolutely no need to 'phone sony' as a few people here are suggestin, theres nothin at all wrong with ur ps3. Most ps3 games are native 720p resolution so that is what they run at on ur tv, u can tell ur ps3 to only display at 1080p/i but all it will do then is upscale the games from their native resolution to the resolution u have checked in ur ps3's display settings which will not give u the optimal picture quality.

Just accept that most games are 720p and will display at that resolution and be happy, its not like 720p is ugly and unplayable after all. Bluray movies will display at 1080p resolutionso u dont need to worry bout anything there.

It will be next generation b4 all games run at native 1080p resolution and thats a while off yet so just enjoy what u have.

The most use you will get out of the 1080p features on your TV will just be through blu-ray movies.

Kinda stinks (1080p user myself), but thats just the way it is until next gen.

Don't worry, most games can't do that resolution, 720p is great anyway

It costs a lot more to develop a game with such high resolutions, so most developers stick with 720p.

A 720p native resolution is fine, besides if you try forceing a 1080p resolution on these games then you could create another set of problems like game skipping or freezeing along with a few more problems.

Remember that most game play at 720p.

1080i is inferior to 720p anyway so there is no problem there.

Wipeout HD = dynamic-framerate-dependent 1080p framebuffer (1280x1080 to 1920x1080)
Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 = 1920x1080 (2xAA)

Better off with 720p my friend.

There might be a problem with your PS3.x-2tha-z

Most games that have 1080p on the box are not actually 1080p. It would be upscaled to 1080p and to do this you need to untick everything apart from 1080p on your PS3 or leave everything ticked and just let your TV do the upscalling.

A 720p native resolution is fine, besides if you try forceing a 1080p resolution on these games then you could create another set of problems like game skipping or freezeing along with a few more problems.jimm895

You do know that all 1080p TV's are upscalling the PS3 to 1080p anyway? I have never had a game freeze or skip due tot his.

Remember that most game play at 720p.

1080i is inferior to 720p anyway so there is no problem there.

WR_Platinum

No its not. 1080i is 1920 x 1080, 720p is 1280 x 720.

1080 is much better than 720p.

No they dont. In the UK I watch Virgin Media HD on a 1080p TV and it outputs at 1080i. when watching this on a 720p TV then its clear that the 1080p TV is better due to the resolution.

Not really, the res is higher but the overall picture quality isn't as good since it only interlaced and progressive is much better than interlaced.

It is. 1080i is much better than 720p, go over to the AV forums (in the UK) and ask over there.

Even if it's true, it's a pointless res for games as most games render 720p and less, no game renders 1080i and a few of them render 1080p. It was made for movies to be honest.

Well your not going to see no difference are you, they are not 1080i sources. To see a difference in 1080i over 720p, you need a 1080p TV and a 1080i source, not 1080p TV and 720p source.

Yes, but the games you listed are not 1080i, they are 720p.

This is my there is confusion over this subject.

1080i is better than 720p, your not seeing this because you dont have a 1080i source (the game).

Like I said Virgin Media HD (UK) is 1080i, this looks much better on my 1080p TV than it does on my dads 720p TV due to my 1080p TV been able to use the resolution of 1080i (1920 x 1080) properly.

&20p looks better for you because your not actually using 1080i as the game is 720p.

Well 1080i vs 720p visual quality is also effected by size. Imo 1080i looks better 40" and above but 720p is better below that.

Wrong. 1080i (and 1080p for that matter) is the same be it at 20" or 100". 1080i/p looks fine/the same at 20" as it does at any size, its your viewing distance that needs to change.

I watch HDTV programs and noticed the 1080i ones look noticeably better. Much better than 720p. Here our FOX channel runs in 720p and the NBC station runs in 1080i, and man the 1080i looks so much clearer and better.

720p is better than 1080i because it refreshes faster. i stands for interlaced and p stands for progressive. P will be better because the image shows up faster than interlaced. Interlaced may have a higher resolution but it won't look as good in high action sequences where a lot it happening because it takes longer to keep up. The difference isn't always notable but in many cases it is.

The reason 720p and 1080i look the same on ps3 but different quality wise on cable is because the ps3 upscales and cable doesn't.

You have a few options.

Either your eye sight is bad

Or your sitting to far from the TV

Or your HD equipment isnt good enough.

Screen shots wont prove a thing.

We were talking about tesolution. Everything I have watched (even high action sequences) have looked better in 1080i over 720p.

Not true really.

Both should output 1080i fine.

Cable in the UK (Virgin Media) outputs at 1080i and so can the PS3 and both of them upscale.

Its not as simple as that. COD MW2 states 720p 1080i/p. But doesnt actually natively run in any of them.

Well before anyone even comments on the difference of 720p, 720i, etc you should educate yourself with this simple little video otherwise peace out of the conversation. And I can say with 100% that FFXIII is full 1080p because that is the signal that it receives from the Playstation 3. And as far as I know you can't force a PS3 game to upscale to 1080p. Only PS and PS2 games. Also, your tv always outputs at 1080p even though it may say the signal it receives from the PS3 is 720p. So in a sense it is your tv that does all the upscaling unless you are playing PS/PS2/DVDs. So everyone here might want to educate themselves and do research instead of speaking out of their asses. Also there's a big advantage to choosing 720p over 1080i like someone pointed out. Enjoy your education for the day. Oh that video is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-JXfyvlPh0 Also upscaling wasn't available until patch 1.80 Taken from Sony Playstation Blog: With 1.80, you can now upscale PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games and DVD movies, up to 1080p if your TV supports it.

Whatever the game is designed for is what it runs at. Whenever I start up my PS3 it flashes 1080p in the top left corner. Then when I start up a game it flashes whatever resolution that game is made to run at.
