nobody knows for sure. i would guess that it would be at least a year away if they even consider it.
since the 40gig doesnt have BC, they would need to update the firmware, which sony has said they have no plans to do, or they would have to include emulation software in each title you download, which is more likely.
anyway, dont hold your breath, buy a PS2 if you want to play the games.

yeah i was pretty sure i read somewhere that the BC was definitely not going to be added. especially because i am pretty sure that even in the 80gig the BC isnt all software emulation, i thought there was still some hardware present.
october seems to be the magical month for bc... i guess we will wait and see, i am on the same boat as you, i sold my ps2 and my 60 gig ps3 when I got my limited gun metal ps3
