Will it be 380 games, or 380 pieces of junk?

Most of us gamers that have common sense know that worth wild titles take years in the making. Just recently, as I am sure everyone knows, Sony officially made a statement that they decided they will offer 380 new games by the end of the fiscal year. All this in effort to boost the sales of the console. My question is..

Do you think they will just dump rushed titles on us? Will they be mostly ported titles? I can't possibly see how any quality game can be created (thrown together) and released on the whim at the request of Sony. These things take time, money, creativity, and lots of work.

PS, I am also suprised Sony finally releaized it takes games to really sell a "GAMING" console. Its not like a company that released the ever so popular PS2 to be in the dark about something like this.

they are games. 380 of them, some will be classics, some will be good, some will suck, just like any console. You make it sound like these games just started development today and will be released within 2008.....no sh*t it takes time to create, how do we know when they have been in development??

I'm pretty sure Sony or any gaming manufacturer knows it takes games to sell a console, just don't expect mindblowing titles within the first 6 months,hell, the first year during PS2 i was playing games like Kessen and Bouncer!

Let's gets some figure's in here. I reckon:

40% (152 games) will be extremelyhigh quality titles such as MGS4, Little Big Planet, Uncharted etc...

Another 40% will be goodmultiplatform titles, with occasional terrible ones.

20% (76 games) will be movie cash ins, which as we know, are usally always dismal.

This is just some guesswork here, but I think that there will be a lot of great titles to play.

And please, don't attack the TC, he's just asking a valid question.

To answer your question I think that if the 380 game quota is met then everyone will have a good reason to buy the PS3. I think that much of that 380 (possibly even more than first estimated), will come from download-able games on their store. I think developers have been talking for a long time about not being able to make it in this world of giant game titles. The PSN store allows smaller developer teams to put out great content to a large audience.

I'm thinking that Hirai know's something we don't know. Game developers have had a long time to get stuff readyto launch on the PS3. If you are thinking that it takes a developer a long time to make great content look at Insomniac Games. They came off of making four Ratchet and Clank games in four years and made a hit like Resistance. It's amazing what highly skilled developers can do. All developers want to put out a great game. That's what makes them money. The PS3 hardware will allow them to do whatever they want. I believe that all the stories we have been hearing about the PS3 losing all it exclusives are about to be flipped on their head.

Yeah I think it was 180 will be downloadable (which can be released in a short time) and 200 software titles (that I hope are not rushed in 9 months).

Anyways, here is one of the many articles floating around:

21 June 2007 - Reuters is reporting that the Nikkei newspaper has quoted Sony Computer Entertainment President Kazuo Hirai saying that there will be 380 PlayStation 3 titles available by March 2008.

Of these 380, apparently 200 will be software titles and 180 will be available as downloads.

This push is obviously to combat the criticism about the lack of PS3 titles available, one of the factors that has seen poor sales for Sony's next-gen console and allowed rival Nintendo's Wii to outsell the product as much as five-to-one according to some reports.

At the moment there are around 60 PS3 games with about 50 download-only titles available for the PS3 worldwide.

With only nine months to make this 380 game deadline we would have to see the launch over 40 new PlayStation 3 titles a month

However, I don't think that will be an issue. Granted a number of them won't be very good, just like SM3, Shrek 3, and others that are out right now aren't very good, but I seriously doubt that a higher proportion of those games will be bad than is usual for a system. The reason is that Sony didn't just make the annoucement on a whim, but based on the time table that they have for their own development houses as well as the third party publishers producing games for them. If you read the link I attached below the President states that he cannot say for sure how many games will come out when from third parties after the new year. The statement basically says that all the other games they are talking about they have a timetable for that has probably either been around for a bit, or just got finalized as a sort of "this is what to expect for the rest of the year" report. The point is that Sony doesn't appear to be rushing anything, just addressing massive "where are the games?" cry going up from the public. Sony's just saying, "chill, by the end of the year ps3 gamers will have plenty to do on their system."

Wait...So how do you know these games are not already in development? This may be the reason PS3 has such few titles at the moment.

Just because a game isn't announced, doesn't mean it can't be in development.

"Price drop next week." Then you would say sony is desperate

"price drop end of 2007" Then you would say sony need a price drop now.

"MGS release is ahead by 2 month" Then you would say sony wants them to release earlier to pump up sales.

The PS3 uses OpenGL. It's not a very complex programing language. Haven't you read the reports about how devs believe that the PS3 is actually the easier console to develop for as apposed to the 360?

look at the next 15 exclusive titles sony is coming up with before the end of the year and you tell me.

what does sony have to do to prove to some of you people that they are the leader in this industry, and that they know what they are doing? there are going to be at least 10 system selling games by the end of the year, compared other comapanies who may have up to three. mind you these are all original ideas.
