I heard that PS3 is getting something similar to achievements and gamerscore.
Is this true? And if so, when?
Thanks. :D

What has happened to the days of beating a game for the sake of beating a game?WasdieI don't know.:(
I miss those days!
Can't you people just feel like you've achieved something rather than do something because you can unlock something by doing it?Vyse_LegendsOMFG, thank you. This achievement crap is getting silly. What ever happened to a real sense of accomplishment just by getting through brutal parts of a game and beating the game? Shoot, now people get excited for getting an achievement just for pressing the start button. Good grief.

It adds more value to games by making people do things they might not normally do. It kind of gives a list of side-quests that you can do in a game for fun. A good example are the COG tags in Gears of War, I thought it was fun looking for cog tags because it was indirectly making me explore the environment more than I usually would, which was fun. :D But if there weren't achievements then the cog tags wouldn't have existed so I probably wouldn't have looked in every nook and cranny because what would I be looking for?

If it unlocks something good in the game then I wouldn't mind them. But if there just for points to show what I achieved I don't really see a point.
I guess some people like a goofy little number next to there name that states how much free-time they have on their hands, by getting the highest scoreSteel_Rain777

Direct quote from you........
The achievements simply lay out tasks for you to complete if you're looking to do more than just beat the boss and move on.

Oh I was refering to points and the gamerscores with that quote not in-game unlockables.:PWhile I don't think points/trophies are necessary, I do think that they add some replay value to some games depending on the player, and having a bunch of trophies to showcase your accomplishments would be kinda cool lol.CJL182
yea i'd love to show my GTHD times in the trophy room

OMG I remember! And then there was this thing where there was just "fun" with nothing else attatched. They don't make fun like they used to...
What has happened to the days of beating a game for the sake of beating a game?WasdieThat's why i dont like achievements... Actually, the idea of personal achievements is good. Im not sure about a gamerscore though.
I actually like the achievements.. When I look on youtube and see the players in shadow of the colossus with the white horse I know they are good players. Getting the horse or the queen's sword is an achievement to be proud of. If they have a speedrun on a boss that is impressive, that's something to be proud of too.
In metal gear solid 3, those who've gotten foxhound ranking have an achievement to be proud of. If I could see that a fellow gamer shares that accomplishment, I'd be more likely to get to know them cause I know we have something in common. There is value in the achievement beyond just achieving it. The gamerscore does break down which achievements were accomplished on 360, so it's somewhat useful. Trophies such as PS3 is proposing are great as well. A trophy for the fouxhound ranking would be quite an accomplishment and worthy of admiration. When I know someone has that achievement, I can much more easily understand what type of gamer they are. This will also help matchmaking for online games. The developers spend great amounts of effort designing these scoring and ranking systems and gamerscores/trophy rooms only add value to this effort.

"As a result, causing the gamer to spend more and more time in front of the tv in order to achieve "elite" status. " That is the sentence missing from your post. otherwise it's fine. :D

Yeah those were the days when we used to kill ourselves trying to do some impossible feat just to get a cow suit or a new skin for our character, i fai to see how this is any different.
Acheiveents add replayability to the game, if you don't like it then just beat the game and quit nobody is forcing you to play it again in a different way

Kind like the whole ranking thing in Halo, most of my friends have 360s. My friends hate it when I get on their gamer thing and screw around cuz they get all wet and say they lose XP or w/e and rank down.
I say, "Ranks are not important, just play the game..."
Them, "You look like a little noob if your a low rank!"
I reply, "Or like a huge nerd with the huge rank."
No reply...kind of off topic, but im saying it doesnt really matter either way..
Alot of you guys are totally missing what makes achievements so awesome.
I'll throw 2 examples out there for you, Enchanted Arms and Lost Planet.
Enchanted Arms - Everyone knows its not a very good game, but I was always a tiny bit intrigued so I rented it (Money goes to the developer) beat the game all the way through because it surprised me at the quality and because I wanted 1000/1000. Would I have picked it up without achievements? Nope, now I'll be more apt to buy another RPG by Ubisoft if they ever make one.
Lost Planet - I was disappointed, I'll admit it. I rented this one (Score a copy for Capcom) and I don't like it much at all. But rather than just return it I decided to play it all the way through for whatever points I could get. Now, as I progress, I really like the game and think its really awesome. It may not be perfect, but I'm having alot of fun. Without achievement points? The game was going right back.
So if people are willing to give all kinds of games chances on the 360 because at the very least they will get some points, developers are WAY more likely to put their lesser known games on the 360 first because they will just sell better than the PS3.
That is why achievements are so great, they help us get more and better games.
I hope not...it's not the 360 :?tryfe_lyn
Yeah, I was 'bout to say the same thing. As far as I know, their will be 'accomplishments' and Playstation HOME is suppose to have some sort of trophy system.
At the moment, Devil May Cry 4 is the only game I have that has 'accomplishments.'
I haven't really been following the updates, but HOME will have trophies for "accomplishments" that players have done.CJL182
I wonder if HOME will upload all of your accomplishments since you bought the PS3, or just since HOME has been loaded? Anyone know anything on that, doesn't seem too hard.
achievment points are for nerds and braggers (you know the kind who stay in their little groups with other nerds with how-many-points-i-dont-care-about). points seperate people, grouping people into the zones of gamer to nerd to UBER king nerds with too much time on their hands and too many pc world magazines.
instead of worthless trophies why not take adantage of the ps3's hardrive and add cool things like vids and special unlockable (uncopyable) wallpapers that you cant copy of a friend, so when they come over they'll sh** themselves over the coolness of your ps3, and they could strive to do the same! things like unlockable themes (mgs 4 themes! "METAL GEAR!?") and those crazy music animations like the space one (if you have 2.10) and fun stuff you can actually enjoy? all straight onto your ps3, so you can view these unlockables anytime you want without having to put the game in!
think OUTSIDE the box people! ( soz to people who like pc world! ) keep on reaching for that rainbow!... not that one...

Yes they did say that all the old games you have accomplished things for would be added.
I see where both sides are coming from though. On one hand I would like for there to be a gamerscore type feature added, but at the same time a can't stand those losers who just play games to get points! All they do is get points and talk about how they are better at a game than everyone else... it really irratates me. I'm good at most games but I don't feel like completely ditching my life in order to get an achievement...
I'll admit right now that I did not read all pages of this post. So this might be repeated opinions from someone else.
Simply put:
Why do you need a post count, forum level and the like? I can assure you that some of the people that believe the achievement system is unworthy for the PS3, or even in general are the same people that try to better their post count on a daily basis, and actually have a value and pride in that number, and their level etc..
Achievements and numbers alike give people something to grasp in terms of what they have accomplished in one way or another, and makes the user usually feel better in various ways.Examples might be post counts, forums levels, achievements in a game, number of enemies killed online.. etc..
I think my point is very clear.
I like "accomplishments" or "archievements" when they have some sort of in game value (like unlocking characters, stages, art or features)... I think it adds a lot of replay value to games that otherwise would fell too short (and considering every new game is about $60, thats a cool feature to look after). Otherwise is kind of pointless and frustrating. Resistance, Heavenly Sword and Ratchet & Clank are good examples, where I could replay several stages several times to complete them 100%, and not feel like I was robbed.
And yes, the PS3 will get archievements as part of the HOME interface, called "accomplishments". Games will have to include them, which means old games that wants to will need to have some update to define global accomplishments and add them to your account...
