Does anybody know if Sony will ever fix the 480p/1080i issue with an update, or is it too late and a chip is required?

I am a little upset that because I have an older HDTV that I am not able to play the PS3 in 1080i. All games are downscaled to 480p, same as PS2. I already spent alot on the system and games and I really dont want to buy a new TV just to be able to play the PS3 in HDTV quality.

What are you talking about?

They updated it so Blu-ray can play at 720p, and they updated it so PS1 and PS2 games could be upscaled.

I don't think they ever updated it so 720p only PS3 games can upscale to 1080i.

I read off the sony main website that all 720p games are downscaled to 480p if the TV does not support 720p. Does anybody have any proof or that a 720p games palys in 1080i?

your ps3 chooses the highest resolution the the game will support. for example, R6V supports 720p and 1080i so it will automatically choose 1080i

They just made a mistake, PS3 720p games don't upscale to 1080i, but will go to 480p instead.

An example Sony has done nothing is how the makers of Rainbow Six 720p only game had to add its own software upscaler to change the game to 1080i or 1080p. Though, that failed since people reported 1080i from that game looks horrible, like something is wrong with the process.

That's a sign if SOny doesn't fix it, some games will fix it themselves, but hopefully better than what happened with Rainbow Six.

I found this in the playstation3 forum at playstation.com I think this will explain everything. 1080i is not supported.

Wait, I though Rainbow Six is actually a 720p only game, but they add their own software upscaler, so it upscales that 720p to 1080i and everyone has said it does it wrong and looks worse than 720p.

Yeah...they never fixed the issue. I tried the heavenly sword and resistance *downloaded the demo last night again for giggles* in 1080i/p and it didn't work and downscaled to 480p. A bit odd how ps1/ps2 games upscale to anything between 480i-1080i *and maybe 1080p* but ps3 games have to stay at their native resolution *or lower* unless the developer uses that somewhat recent horizontal upscaling technique like rainbox six vegas had.

I'm guess because game makers and their PS3 games are using the full process of the PS3 there isn't much left for upscaling. So if Sony has to use software to upscale, then throwing that into the mix of a full running PS3 game can cause issues with the performance and reliability that wasn't accounted for when the game was developed. While PS2 and PS1 games, sony controls the software that's involved with running them so they have better control and a lot more headroom to do upscaling.
