Luckily nothing has happened to my PS3 Fat just yet and the warranty has been expired, but if something did happen, I plan on trying to fix it myself because I don't want to pay $160. But I was wondering, what if you can't fix it yourself the first time, can you still send it to Sony as the last resort or will they deny you since you opened it?

They would deny you. Im pretty sure that there is a warranty seal somewhere that you have to break in order to take it apart

I'm almost 100% certain that you can. As long as they get their $150. Of course you would be voiding any warranty you had, but you said it was up anyways.

I know from experience that they will fix your ps3 regardless if the seal is intact or not. Like the previous poster stated, as long as they get their $150+tax.

They might depending, but it could cost more or just be returned with you losing on shipping costs.

1) if you're still under warranty, they'll check if the seal is broken ; if it is it'll void the warranty

2) if you're out of warranty, it won't change anything

anyway they don't "fix" the PS3, they dismantle it, keep the pieces that still work (think they test them but they have to be almost new), then they check your model and they reassemble one from the parts they have. Good thing is if some parts have changed (like the newer processor, or better transistors) you'll get the better newer parts in it. My PS3 was a 60Gb and I have the new processor and thermal paste in it, I've never heard it go to speed 4 fan, even when doing folding@home.

According to their website, they will repair it unless the serial number label has been tampered with.

Thanks for the info guys. If my Fatty ever breaks I want to fix it myself first because the warranty has been expired and I don't really want to pay $150 plus tax.

They'll still fix it, but if you had a warranty, you have it no longer. Regardless of whether you open it not, they'll still take your money to fix it.

Even with the fact that my PS3 broke down, today was the day that it was supposed to be delivered. I was happy that it was going to come back. UPS says that it is delivered, but it isn't on my front porch. I think that either someone stole it, or they delivered to the wrong place. This blows.

Edit: I found it. They delivered it to the wrong address. it was on an empty house's porch.

Opening the PS3 only voids your warranty coverage, which means Sony pays for repairs. If you have opened it and can't fix it, Sony will always fix the problem for a fee.

I thought the same thing when my 60gb got ylod, the warranty seal is just for your warranty so if thats up it doesnt matter, so i purchased a fix kit from www.ps3repairvideos.com and did the fix myself, still workin 12 months on!
