Noone knows for sure. But I think that the PS2 emulation on the first PS3 systems were partially hardware-powered. So I doubt its even possible to include it in a firmware update.
One can only hope. :)
You answered your own question in the title... It's not even a big deal anymore. I have a backwards compatible ps3 and I NEVER play ps2 games anymore. Way too many ps3 games to get too for me to worry about older ones at this point. I bought Shadow of the Collosus nearly a year ago and still haven't got to it yet! But more importantly... if you already have a PS2 (as you should if you still have so many ps2 games), this really isn't an issue.I wanna buy a ps3 but i need it to play ps2 games. Not unless your friend jacked your ps2 when he moved away leaving you your ps2 games but not the system :x
that seriously happened to me
This late in the game I doubt it. What would be the incentive for Sony to do so now as the intial customer base is already there. They are a business and will probably start selling them on PSN once the PS2 officially dies. This way they can get you to rebuy the games again so you can play them on their PS3. I'm sure this will happen before the gen is over as it makes great business sense. Of course Sony does make some weird business decisions PS3 initial, PSPGo initial price so you never know.
This is a comment I made on another thread similar to this one:
The PS1 is a weak console so it can be easily emulated through software but the PS2 is a little more powerful and complex so to emulate it through software onlyyou either need an insanely perfect code or very powerful hardware.
The thing is that Sony completely removed every PS2 hardware component from the PS3 and they even made the mother-board like 3 times smaller than how it used to be so they can't add the PS2 hardware emulation back. The only way to make a PS3 to play PS2 games nowis solely through software emulation which would take years due to the insanely huge PS2 library and there's no benefit for Sony on doingthat. They would lose time and money when they just can just keep selling PS2 consoles and PS2 remastered games for the PS3 and make money out of both.
Another way would be through homebrew ? There are some people that dedicate years of their life to work for free into making these kind of things possible but that's illegal I think (?). I don't think we'll see completely legalPS2 BCmaking a combackuntil the next console generation.
