i have no hdtv but a flat panel 19'' lcd monitor that has a vga input to a vga connection to the pc. my resolution is 1280x1024. i know its possible to play the ps3 on this montior and i hope this way im bout to tell u all will work.

1. use hdmi to dvi connection
2. dvi connetion to vga  connection
3.vga connection to vga connection

i hope this way will work because i dont want to spend a $100 on a hdmi to vga box converter

Most likely not since it would be odd for a non-DVI/HDMI display to support HDCP. Also few LCD-input-only displays support HDTV resolutions. If the display also has a Component input you would get a better display that way.

DVI is just like HDMI, except it doesnt support sound, so the digital picture will carry from the HDMI to DVI just fine. The only issue may be the DVI to VGA as VGA is an analogue cable, but they wouldnt produce a cable if it wasnt possable so i cant see why it wouldnt work. Theres no harm i trying so just give it a go.

DVI is just like HDMI in terms of both being digital connectors. That's where the comparison ends, however. After DVI's introduction Hollywood complained about copy protection issues and HDCP (High Definition Copy Protection) was introduced. The problem is that many (if not most) DVI displays before and after lack the HDCP circuitry. HDMI, on the other hand, always has HDCP (in addition to carrying audio) so all HDMI displays have HDCP, it's part of the standard. The PS3 requires HDCP in order to use the HDMI output.

Some newer DVI computer displays now have HDCP to support high definition playback. The difference here is the TC said they have RGB which almost certainly meas no HDCP, as RGB is an analog connector. DVI and HDMI are digital connectors. There's an easy and free solution: check the monitor's manual for any mention of HDCP. If it isn't mentioned as supported the the PS3's HDMI port cannot be used with the display.

on the 360, the vga cable has left and right stereo connectors that come with it, and theres an optical output as well on the bit that plugs into the 360, unless you have something like this then sound going to be a problem, but i thought the ps3 had and optical out on the back, only thing you need then is a receiver with an optical input. Without something like this your pretty much screwed for sound, sorry.

There are two different ways to get sound through this set-up. 1) by using you regular ps cables for sound. Or 2) throught the optical port on the back. But if you dont have a soround sound system that suports optical then more than likely  you'll be going the regular ps cable way. By the way you can choose what you want yor sound to come out of. If you have HDMI you can choose that, if you have optical you can choose that, but if you have regular old red and white you'll be using that. Buy the way I have mine set up to have the video come from HDMI and sound to come out of my regular ps cables. I have a optical port on my ss but for some reason I get a bad crakling noise. Probably because of my $20 optical cable. I wish my ss sytem supportted HDMI because having sound comming out of my TV is just wrong and I would have to Kill myself. But it all turned out good because I just built a computer that has a optical port on it so i use that to get sound from my ss system which i've always wanted. But yeah in short you choose where your video comes from and where your sound comes from. THE POWER, IS YOURS...YOURS...YOURS... YOURS...........
