Do you guys think there will be an update allowing us to play music from the HDD during games? I've been playing Gears with a friend with Led Zep in the background and it honestly completely changes a game...its crazy fun. Anyway, I really think Sony should put it in one of the system updates, as music on the HDD otherwise doesnt make that much sense....iTyVi36i dont see why not.. they will probably adress that in the march update.
This feature was patented by Microsoft. Sony could pay off the patent holder and add rumble later, but not custom soundtracks (since I doubt MS would want to sell something like this to the competition).Hulabalozabesides the fact that that simply is not true, who said anything about "custom soundtracks?" XMB is sony's OS and they can allow access to it while in-game if they want. that was probably one of the more ignorant posts i've seen in a while.

man i don't know wether to smack him, or pat him on the head and tell him everything is going to be ok.
lol M$ patented multitasking.
Sounds lika people expect the PS3 to do just about anything after the magic march update. :DRadiozo
not everything, for instance it won't be able to make me breakfast,(that'll be the next update)
As a big music fan, this is really a big deal to me, and it frustrates me to no end knowing that it is not something currently available. I mean especially since we heard and continue to hear so much about how the PS3 is so powerful as a media hub. This shouldn't be a feature that comes along in an update, it should have been present right from the get go. Especially considering Sony's ties to the music business, this is just not acceptable. They should definately have seen that this was a needed feature.
The 360 has a great in game HDD music system, right from the start, hell, the underpinnings were starting with the original xbox, but Sony couldn't manage it a year after the 360 even launched, come on. This may seem like a small thing to a lot of people, but it's things like this that add up and lead to why Sony and the PS3 are getting so bashed and not getting the warm reception that everyone thought it would a while back.
Don't get me wrong, I forked over some 900 bucks to Sony to pick up a 60 gig PS3, an extra sixaxis, a warranty and some games, so my commitment is there. I know I just came off as a MS fanboy, and I won't deny that I love my 360, but I expect a lot out of the PS3 and Sony, and as a PSP owner too, I think we are owed a little more attention to detail than we seem to be getting lately. Nothing packs as much overall ability, power and potential as the PS3, but let's face it, it's the ability to use all that stuff that really matters, and right now, Sony isn't giving us all they can.
It sisn't only on Sony to make this happen. The game developers will have to make games that coordinate with music on the HDD.
If my memory is correct, I don't think many Xbox games utilize it much. My guess is that developers would rather make money off of a soundtrack than to allow us to choose our own.

You clearly don't know what your talking about. It has nothing to do with the game devs, it's all system operating system/hardware. You hit the guide button on the 360, and simply access your music on your HDD, and it plays it, it basically just softens the actual game soundtrack and sound effects, and heavily puts in place your music from the HDD, it has nothing to do with the game itself really.
I think what you may be thinking of, is in some of the sports games on original xbox, and other games, you could go in and actually choose to play your music from the HD in place of songs or music in the game, and not have it impact the in game sound effects. This is not what we are discussing here, the TC is talking about simply accessing music from the PS3 HDD during games which is all down to Sony getting it available to us.

Correct, that is what I'm thinking. Let me get you right, here. So you can play the music in the background in whatever you're doing. Can you turn the games' soundtrack off then? I would assume you could then. Otherwise you'd be fighting with it.

Yeah on the 360 you can play music in whatever your doing, Game in Disc drive, demo off the HDD, Arcade game off the HDD, while on Live, chatting with a friend, or just cruising around the OS, it's usually even seemless, I can go from downloading a movie off of the Marketplace, back to OS (Home Operating System) and into Pac-Man without a hitch in the song I'm listening too. That's what Sony needs on the PS3.
You can turn down all the way to essentially off in game Music and or sound effects, SE usually are fine to leave where they are by default, since the Music player quiets the background of the game so much, that thier not obnoxious, but yet you can still hear them a bit, so your still in the game, you can also turn up and down the level of volume within the music player. It's not that bad though just to leave all the in game stuff where it was, and start up the music player, it's not as horrible of conflict as one might think, if your super lazy you can get away with it.
All they would have to do is allow access to the XMB while in-game through the PS button (along with the multitasking to go with it, of course)-SLUG-they dont have to even do that, just open up the damned option of custom soundtracks for devs to choose wetehr or not they want custom soudntracks in their games, cuz as of right now they cant even make that choice

Simply not true.... http://www.google.com/patents?vid=USPAT6981918&id=mx93AAAAEBAJ&dq=gaming+soundtrack I'm not going to make up something stupid like that. Look....the reason the PS3 will NOT have custom soundtracks is cause Microsoft owns the patent....end of story.

It covers every possibility. Show me where Sony says they are going to add this. I'd be interested to see if there is proof or just faith that it will happen. This would be an easy feature to add, and it would HAVE to be included with the SDK (to fit the music into the game).....so it's highly unlikely that it will be added late.
