Sony says that the PS3 has increased in sales, but experts predict that it is in trouble. Some analysts (I don't remember where I read it) even think that Sony may stop manufacturing the PS3 and just make software. If game sales are poor developers will stop making games for it. The lack of support for the PSP proves it.

Ugh. I don't want support for PS3 to die. I spent 2000 dollars on a 60G PS3 and a 40" HDTV. I don't like the Wii and have no intention of buying an XBOX 360.

Someone please prove the PS3 doubters wrong.

It won't die, it is just the beginning. Beside if by 1% chance it does fail, we can always get an Xbox 360 :(. But I highly doubt the PS3 will just stop

I read something about that too. They said they are doing what they can to protect it, but I think it will stay in the clear.

The Playstation 3 will definetly not fail. in fact it has a chance of catching up to the 360. if you read the latest new on gamespot you will see that the Playstation 3 is actually doing really good.

Also, they said that manufactures will go up with demand for the PS3, and if any chance the system does fail, which it probably wont, you can do your best to try to keep your PS3 alive.

Playstation is turning about 60 - 75% profit from each unit sold. Thats around $250.00 - $300.00, just on consols alone, not games. Look at these forums and you can see PS3 is nearly as popular as Xbox 360.

I'm not worried at all.

Don't worry. Sony will not take a loss on PS3. Currently, they still have a lot of development cost that they haven't recouped. I'm betting that once they do recoup the development cost they'll lower the cost to increase the install base.

I really hope Sony doesn't stop making Playstations. If they don't make a Playstation 4, I might have to buy the Xbox 720 or the Nintendo Us. Or if out of some miracle Sega makes a console for the next generation, I might buy that instead of Microsoft or Nintendo's next console.

Yeah, supposedly they're losing around $130 per console. I dont know how you could figure they were making a profit... especially one that large.

You guys aren't looking at the picture the way analysts are - you guys see that the are decent PS3 sales and a thriving community - but the analysts look at the picture and see high production cost with low software sales which equate to Sony constantly losing money on the PS3 - every sale of the PS3 is not money profited for Sony, just a 'mail in rebate' post manufacturing in a sense. So basically, high production cost, poor software sales, not to mention expensive software production costs all point to the unfortunate end of the PlayStation - in the eyes of the analysts.

Not to mention many other departmnets of Sony are doing poorly and Sony has begun cutting back on employes, etc.

I don't know why people are so worried I mean all you need to see is this graphhereand you can see that compared to the other consoles its doing pretty good for how long its been on the market and at the same time costing a lot and facing stiff competition. Imagine what's going to happen as prices for the console drop? The PS3 will sell, people will buy games and the Playstation brand will grow and the cost to Sony will eventually reach a point where they aren't losing, plus they make enough on software, peripheral and PSN sales to make up for it. And before you say that my source is not trustworthy, they use NPD data for their information.

They have already been lowered, Sony is now in fact turning profit for every console sold.

Except for the fact that they don't make any money off the PS3 and infact lose about 50-100 dollars right now per ps3 sold. If PS3's were that cheap to make they would be selling them at 200 dollars and would have almost Wii like sales. The PS3 costs more than it is sold for.

B.S.... T.v.'s and playstation are Sony's only good products right now. They will look to cut the fat elsewhere before either of those divisions shut down. Year over year sales of PS3 are improving, games are selling well on the system, and the PS3 will be making a profit by this year... it's not going anywhere.

Actually the latest analysis has them at about break even point... it's only an estimate though so they could still be losing as much as $50 p/console. But hey, so is M$, particularly with the arcade.

Playstation will never die!!!!!!!!!!!!

I mean look at it!! Its (in my opinion) the best gaming console out there...!! Its got games like Killzone 2, Resistance 2, Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction/Quest for Booty, God of War 3, MGS 4, GTA 4, LittleBigPlanet, Fifa 09, Skate 2, Prototype, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune/Among Thieves, Burnout Paradise, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift.. That will turn some heads and improve sales, not to mention the price cut.... Playstation 3 sure came off to a rocky start but they are finally getting their act together. It is also an established brand name, i bought my ps3 only out of the fact that it was Playstation... Xbox is cool 2 i wont lie, so is the wii but at the end of the day i believe Playstation will be on top.

No offense but listing a bunch of games that we all know exist isn't really an argument in favor of why the PS3 will live on - to the contrary, one of the downfalls at the moment for the PS3 is that those games you listed (the ones that are out) aren't selling that well, most of them, that is.

how do people not realize that the same thing happened with the ps2, sony took a hit on the console for the first couple of years, then once the console had a high enough install base EVERYONE wanted to program for it and sony started picking up incredible software and making money off of that, then the hardware followed. i predict that most of the analysts who say that the ps3 is in trouble have little to no economical backgrounds and to top it off they probably don't take into account that sony knew this was going to happen before they even released it. the brand will only gain momentum and as technology gets better prices will get lower and more units will be selling. as it is each year has been considerably better than the year before and if sony keeps it up they definitely have a shot at tying with the wii, especially when you factor in brand loyalty and hardware failure rates as a reason to pick ps3 over 360 (i picked ps3 for the exclusives and hardware reliability personally, i've always figured its worth paying a little extra for something of quality)

except that this time around the Xbox 360 is in that position - it has a larger installed base and a way cheaper software production cost. as for failure rates - those have gone done signifcantly - not to mention Microsoft fixes the hardware failure completely free of charge where as Sony, as experienced by many PS3 forumees, charge absurd amounts ($150 to my recollection) in order to fix a hardware issue.

that is why i got the ps3 over the 360 quality over quantity. i dont see the point in buying a 360 when i know its going to rrod in a couple of weeks. dont get me wrong tho i can c why pplz would go for the 360 over ps3

I wouldn't worry too much. They say this every year about PS3. Sony also still makes money off of the PS2 and PSP, so they have 3 systems working for them. The Gamecube did even worse than the PS3 and it still had a successor. The 360 only outsells it like 2 to 1. That isn't enough of gap for the PS3 to down. The 360 was outsellling it 5 or even more to 1, so going from last year to this year has been quite an improvement. Most 3rd parties except THQ are supporting the system.

With exclusives like

Heavy Rain

God of War 3

White Knight Chronicles

Killlzone 2

Ratcjet and Clank second PS3 adventure

Uncharted 2

Wardevil Enigma

Gran Turismo 5

Infamious

Fat Princess

Nobi Nobi Boy

We might get Twisted Metal

more Pixeljunk Games

Multiplats like

Tekken 6

Prototype

Resident Evil 5

Street Fighter 4

Bioshock 2

Fear 2

plus we have games even further ahead in the future like

Demon Souls

Cross Edge

Blazblu

MAG

That is all I can think of at the moment, but still, that is more than enough to hold anyone over for the next year, seriously.

you realize that sony doesn't profit from selling ps3's right? they lose money. But their costs of production are coming down. so thats is good news for everyone

You are an idiot...

Production of a single PS3 unit is around $100.00 - $150.00 for parts and labor. They sell for $400.00 - $500.00.

Yeah no profit? haha.

Stop listening to stupid **** and do some actual research. They speak of the true facts on MSNBC often, or they use to around Christmas time. Thats where I got my facts from, not what some kid on a forum told me.

Bottom line, if they weren't turning at least 15% profits, then they would have raised prices, not scrap the project all together. Scrapping the project would lose them more money than keeping it going at higher prices. The fact that they don't raise prices is a dead giveaway that they are fine, and the fact that Sony's stocks jumped significantly when PS3 was released and continues to rise also adds a note of insurance to any doubters.

Why would Sony stop making console and make software like SEGA. The PS2 is still selling and the PS3's sales are rising and catching XBOX 360. Also Sony made the best last gen console so i don't see Sony stop making hardware anytime soon.

Actually your definitely the idiot ... find me 3 sources to back up your claims of a 100-150 dollar production costs ... cause I can probably give you 300 sources to back my claims that they lose 50 - 150 dollars per ps3.

the irony of you calling him an idiot is too much. Sony has stated their production costs, this isn't some rough estimate by us. It's a well known fact that Sony is indeed losing money per sale of the PS3.

From the news I've read lately regarding the PS3, it seems to me that it's gaining momentum, and becoming more popular. I'm not worried at all, nor am I the least bit disappointed with my PS3. Only thing that I'm slightly disappointed with is that some recently released games don't have trophy support, its not a big deal though. In fact, I think they're fixing that.

[QUOTE="KidKupo"][QUOTE="94thmp"] you realize that sony doesn't profit from selling ps3's right? they lose money. But their costs of production are coming down. so thats is good news for everyonestygiansanity

The fact that they don't raise prices is a dead giveaway that they are fine, and the fact that Sony's stocks jumped significantly when PS3 was released and continues to rise also adds a note of insurance to any doubters.

the irony of you calling him an idiot is too much. Sony has stated their production costs, this isn't some rough estimate by us. It's a well known fact that Sony is indeed losing money per sale of the PS3.

When? 3 years ago when it costed them $200.00 to produce a single bluray player? or a month ago when it costs them $50.00 to produce one?

Unless you guys have info on Sony producing PS3's made out of solid gold, then its hard to believe...

I can find you a reference online of some guy claiming Tom Cruise is actually Jesus... Since its on the internet it must be true! Why would someone lie?

Playstation is turning about 60 - 75% profit from each unit sold. Thats around $250.00 - $300.00, just on consols alone, not games. Look at these forums and you can see PS3 is nearly as popular as Xbox 360.

I'm not worried at all.

Yeah, supposedly they're losing around $130 per console. I dont know how you could figure they were making a profit... especially one that large.

I read in USA Today tht it is 49 bucks

Im worried as well, I read holiday sales are down from last year, its really simple economics, it doesnt make sense to produce something that is losing you money or that people are not buying. I still hold out hope and listen to the words of the die-hards here who seem to think there is no possible way on the planet the PS3 could get flushed down the toilet, though I think a lot of that is pure bias talking. I loved the original PS and the PS2, I want to stay loyal to the PS3, I wish it was doing better, I dont know what happened.

Actually your definitely the idiot ... find me 3 sources to back up your claims of a 100-150 dollar production costs ... cause I can probably give you 300 sources to back my claims that they lose 50 - 150 dollars per ps3.

basic common sense i dont think it takes 100-150 to make the ps3 but it does take less than $499 or %399 w\e to make it. what profit is any company going to make it they sell stuff for $10 that couse $8 to make? i bet a pair of nike shoes cost wut maybe $50 to make n we pay $80+ for them maybe more

Lol you sweet naive little child. it's all propaganda. America's analysts are forced to talk negatively about the foreign companies in americas top industries. By doing this they are helping the poor economy and encouraging americans to buy american products. Thats all it is.

@ KidKupo

The PS3 is not pulling in a profit. Sony is in fact operating at a loss, although this deficit has decreased due to more efficient manufacturing methods and materials, cutting production costs by about 35%. Sony worldwide is still profitable with a profit margin just under 4%, which is a significant increase since a slump in 2006, but the computer entertainment division, specifically the division responsible for the PS3 is still not pulling in profit for the hardware, and is instead scraping together a small profit from software sales. Sony is still hopeful that by the end of 2009 they will streamline production well enough to possibly shorten the gap further and break even, possibly even reach profitability. But the fact remains, that the PS3 since its launch has not pulled in a profit, and will continue to not do so for much of the year.

Fine find me a respectable source, I mean you go to school and know what that is right? We ain't talking about wikipedia, we're talking about Reuters, real journalists or how about the CEO of Sony himself, cause he said that too (he said they're still operating at a loss in terms of the PS3 and hope to break even sometime early this year).

GeoffZak

Where in the world are you getting info on new systems for MS and Nintendo??? I mean PS4 would be a given since its Sony's trend to do that with console names. But the others...

Regardless of whether or not they are losing money, I don't think Sony would give up the next-gen (well, now-gen) video game market to Microsoft and Nintendo, whether for pride or because without videogames they are essentially just television producers. Plus, every company is taking hits in this economy. They will endure.

They have already been lowered, Sony is now in fact turning profit for every console sold.

No, they actually just started breaking even very recently. I'll look for the link because I'm 99% sure that I'm right.
