I got a 60 GB PS3 used last year. I've barely had it for a full year. Back in February it started having problems where it wouldn't start up. The green light would come on and the fan would kick in for a second, but I wouldn't have picture. If I let it sit in that state for like 15 minutes and restarted it, it would boot up properly then. Now it won't even give me that. It just sits there with the green light doing nothing. The fan will randomly kick in after a while, but it won't do anything. I know it's not just a video problem because the controller isn't being recognized when I plug it in.

I called Sony, and I have to send it in to get repaired for $149. I asked them if the fee would be reduced if I had to send it in again, but the woman said it would still cost $149 if i send it in after the 90-day warranty from the repair. This is where my dilemma stems from. I really want to have my BC, but not if I have to drop loads of money to keep getting it fixed. I was considering just saving up for a new slim, but I wouldn't know what to do with my PS2 games. Has anybody had a decent experience recently with getting their console back from Sony after repairs? Is it worth sending it in? I heard one account of somebody having to send it in multiple times.

Im wondering the same thing. I'm in the process of mailing mine in for a Broken Ethernet port and something with the bluetooth malfunctioning. My controllers take 35-45 seconds to sign in unless I plug my cable in first. If I turn the system on from the controller it freezes every time. Need to power on from the console.... Mine is a 60GB as well. Bought it new in January of 2006

For that black screen problem try this... 1. Turn off the main power and back on 2. Hold down the power until you hear the system beep about 3 times individually. It should go right back into standby 3. Then hold down the power again you hear double beeps. 4. At that point you should get video feed and the system will bring you to a menu with a number of options. 5. Choose the option to reformat your HDD, or check for corrupt data. If your HDD is corrupted that might be causing this...If your HDD is corrupt you will lose all save data, but it's worth the risk if you were planning on sending it to Sony anyway. Oh ya...if your controller doesn't sign in at the system menu after you plug the cable in then do a force shutdown by holding the power for about 10seconds. until it goes to standby. This will not harm your system and is what is recommended in the user manual.

Here is decent solution trade one of your PS3 games that you don't want at EB Games I think this is only available in Canada but w.e. trade in one game and receive a used "FAT" or "SLIM" PS2 for free or get it repaired or get the PS3 Slim or get the "FAT" PS3(160gb or 80gb if you can find it)

That's the safe mode (just like the windows OS has had for a long time) and there is four different options that could cure a lot of problems without doing a full reformat. If you go to the Sony tech support site it gives the options and tells you to try running all these options before selecting the reformat option.

I know about the recovery/safe mode. I've already tried booting into that, but it doesn't work.

I wanted opinions on whether or not i should get it fixed for my BC or get a new slim. I've already exhausted all the other options minus taking apart the thing myself. (Well...I did try reseating the HDD, but that didn't work either.)

Not worth it if you have an earlier model.

Only fix it if you care about having full B/C. If you don't care about it, i heard trading in your broken 60GB at Gamestop and getting some trade points/money towards a Slim.

That is definitely what I wanted to hear, haha. I'm leaning towards getting it fixed because I really want my BC, otherwise i'll stare longingly at my PS2 games until I get a PS2 or something.

i think the 60 gig is well worth spending the $150 bucks to get fixed.. IF you use the bc and or card readers. My son's 60 gig isnt reading discs but I will be fixing it instead of buying a slim.
