took the game back to the store to rent it again - guess the clerk touched the bottom of it and left a big print.

will smudges cause screen freezes?

Why don't you just wipe it off?

I'm sure it's possible if the smudge was large enough, sure.

Any damage to a disc can cause it not to work.

I've had the same thing happen to me. Not a big deal, I just keep my game disks scratch/smudge free.

Yeah, I've had rented Blu-ray movies freeze up and skip frequently, only to take it out and find big finger smudges. Much easier than dealing with scratched up dvd's though, as the smudges wipe right off.

That's the amazing part about BluRay. The disks are very hard to naturally scartch (you can't take a knife to them of course...), which is why I have no issues buying used games, as most of them are still in near mint condition.

When the PS3 freezes it means the blue ray is searching for data. A smudge on the disk can cause it to freeze up. I was playing uncharted and it kept freezing in the same place. After I cleaned the finger print off it stopped doing it.

lol, a smudge comes off very easy. I doubt it would do anything anyway.
