So I always hear people buying bigger harddrives for their ps3 and I always hear about people having difficulties with the removing the HDDand backing up their save. I was just wondering if I buy an EXTERNAL HDD that connects to my ps3 through usb would it work? I have a 40 gb ps3 >_> and space is limited but I dont want to go with process of taking my HDD and losing data and knowing my stupid @$$ I would probably eff upmy ps3 trying to install a new HDD. So if I get an externalusb HDD would it work and would I still have to take out my 40gb even tho I'm using an external HDD?

I don't think that you can connect an hard drive through that mini usb. Why don't you just put it on a backup memory stick maybe? Then download it back to the ps3 after you put in the new hardrive.....

It will work as a way to back up save games and store music and videos, but you cannot install games to an external device as far as I know, and they're the biggest culprit when it comes to eating up space.

Just backup your HDD on the external drive before removing it from the PS3. Then take off the cover to the HDD and take out 1 screw, fold the handle for the HDD out and slide the HDD to the right and pull straight out. Then take the entire bracket off the HDD and put it on your new HDD the same way you took it off the other HDD. Be sure to be careful because the screws strip very easy. Then put it back in your ps3. Make sure your new HDD is 2.5" and it should work fine. I will give you a link if you want.

Here is the link to the Playstation Website, they give you really good details how to replace your HDD. I thought it was really easy.

I think only usb powered ext. HDD work well with PS3. HDDs powered by external power source won't.

Am i right guys??
