There's certainly no reason I can think of for the 60GB to only use 5GB, but the 320 to use close to 60GB.
1. I'm making the assumption that there have been a lot more updates that would need to be downloaded since you bought your 60gb PS3. 2. Hard drives are calculated using the increments of 2 to the 10th power. Thus 320GB would equal 298.02GB. GGbblundell@bblundellI don't get your second point. Care to explain it?

GGbblundellI see what your saying BUT all PS3s no matter what must be updated to the latest software before bein able to sign into PSN, so it would be impossible for different PS3 SKUs to have different update data considering that PSN is the same on all consoles. And if what your saying is right, then why wouldn't they mRket it as what it actually is and not lie to people? And also the HDD no matter what 320GB bundle you at will always be a 298GB HDD
Yea so when I go my launch 60gb, I had an available 55GB out of the box. So I recently bought a 320 GB move bundle. I set it up and just curious, I looked at the HDD option in the system settings menu. I look at the screen and I am instantly bewildered. So the PS3 is advertised at a 320 GB HDD right? Yea well apparently the HDD is only 298GB with only an available 263 GB. So should I be a bit annoyed considering how the available space is almost 100gb let than what's advertised? Can they do his? Man some marking ploy.. Has anyone experienced this epifany? Please share... P.S. HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERONE!!!!Nerkle01Oh brother! Do you have a PC?
I think they measure a GB as 1000MB, instead of the actual 1024 MBs that count as 1GB in your PS3. Even if it turned out to be the full 320GB, it would be better to buy a 160GB holiday bundle, buy Move seperately, and then buy a higher capacity hard drive when you need it (or just buy one now to avoid the hassle of transferring data).
Yeah, every hard drive manufacturer (or flash memory) still uses the archaic 1000 bytes in a kilobyte, 1000 kilobytes in a megabyte, etc, when in reality it's 1024. The bigger the drive the larger the discrepancy between advertised size and actual size.
IE, a 2TB drive really only has about 1.82TB, a perceived loss of 180GB.
And add to that the PS3 storing system files, which eats away the space even more. And I have a feeling it might be percentage based as well, isolating more space for cache files than a smaller drive.
Data Takes Space. Are you the same kind of person who buys a quarter-pound hamburger and then kvetches that it's less than a quarter-pound after cooking, and so it's false advertizing?
:?
C'mon, man... Be real.
lol @ TC: Is that your first device you bought with at least 1GB? It's everywhere the same, they count 1GB as 1'000'000'000 Bytes, but 1 GB is 1024 MB, 1 MB is 1024 KB and 1 KB is 1024 Bytes. If you want to blame anyone, blame the entire HDD industry because they don't count like the electronic device does :S
[QUOTE="Ratchet_Fan8"]Get a Terabyte hardriver then! Nerkle01Good idea The max you can get for Ps3 is a half terabyte
Actually no. I was just surprised that the difference was so much. But seriously, you don't have to be a jerk about it.Data Takes Space. Who's "being a jerk about it"? I was simply asking a question. It's called conversation, and if you can't take someone having a different viewpoint or someone occasionally misinterpretting what you say, then you had best buy a helmet. Krikey.

yeah but it seemed like you went out of your way to try and make me look like an idiot.[QUOTE="Nerkle01"][QUOTE="Ratchet_Fan8"]Get a Terabyte hardriver then! GrizzlyBear1976Good idea The max you can get for Ps3 is a half terabyte Actually, as long as the HDD is the standard 9mm in thickness it will fit in the PS3. 1TB HDDs are 12mm thick, therefore they will not fit in the HDD caddie in the PS3. I've seen no documented proof of a max HDD size that the PS3 will recognize.

a better idea would be to get a 2 terabyte hardrive:P
This happens on all HDD's, even for PC or other machines.
It's something you learn overtime, but as far as your PS3, I would also guess you have PSN games, DLC, updates, music, pictures, and video's taking up space where you least expect it. I know machines these days sometimes ship with content on them you can delete if you don't want it.

All hard drives are like that...
That's not so bad, I remember buying a new 360 at launch, with only 13GB available of 20. That's just 65% of the advertised space

Anyway, you could use a 7200 RPM drive or even a SSD if you wanted
yea i was kinda surprised by this too, cause with my 160 gig i didnt really notice, apparantly, the bigger the hdd, the more that goes off...on my 320 gig it was the same as with you.. it keeps the space for safety reasons or whatever...oh well, plenty of space anyway, but it's kind of dirty yea..t

reality - 1024 MB in 1 Gig
BS advertising - 1000MB in 1 Gig
To the TC do the math and some research before you rant like a school girl over ignorance of a subject
So asking a question about how the hdd looks off is ranting like a school girl? Someone get up on the wrong side if the bed this morning?I don't understand how in the world can someone be worried about using all of the hardrive? I have the 160 and I'm not even close.
I mean... do you never worry about cleaning out old things that you absolutely have no use for? I'm not picking on anyone in particular but I mean c'mon.... you don't even need all of that.
You clean your room.... clean out your hardrive!
On my original 60GB PS3, it says the maximum amount is 55 and I started at 47GB free space. This kind of thing happens. I lost about 8GB and you lost about 22GB. You also forget that the new PS3's start at firmwire 2.75 or something like that, and not at the most simplistic version. Firmwire updates consume memory. I have an old computer with an 80 GB hard drive. The maximum is actually 74 GB and then I only had like 60 something GB of free space. It could have been 67 GB I am not sure. You are not getting ripped off. Every piece of hardware is like this. I doubt you will you 50% of that memory if you mainly use it for games. If you go crazy with the music and TV shows, then you might run out.
