WTF White Knight Chronicles?

Okay, so being a huge fan of Dark Cloud, I decided to rent White Knight Chronicles after work today. Putting aside all of my other disappointments in this game, has anyone else who played it freaked out about the custom avatar like did? The amount of features in the character creator is pretty good so I ended up spending about 10 minutes putting together a cool looking character. Then what happens? YOU DON'T EVEN GET TO PLAY AS YOUR AVATAR! Nope. You play as the main guy. Your avatar just follows your character around not saying a single thing or contributing to the game or story other than a second sword in combat. Discuss.

Try reading the game manual sometime...

Press select, change character, select your avatar and there you go....

Luckily you get to play as your avatar. Shame he/she isn't voiced, but oh well. It's not much different from Persona titles, except your avatar isn't really the main character. And I guess you miss out on transforming into the White Knight, but whatever. I hear you don't even need to play as the WK that much.

The Custom avatar was just a tacked on feature done late development to meet the "online" requirement of games these days. It almost amazes me that nobody bashes FallOut 3 for not having online play, you know what I mean?

well minus the whole "VATS would be impossible" thing i was a little disappointed, but then Borderlands came around and now i don't care :)

For those who didn't read my whole original post, I RENTED the game. That means NO MANUAL. And thank you to those few kind people for telling me how to switch characters.

No where in your original post did you say you rented the game. You said you "picked it up".

Well, seeing as it had an in-game text tutorial, the fact that I've played a lot of RPGs, and the fact that most games don't usually have HELP menus, I didn't really think to check the Options menu for that feature. Not exactly the first place I'd think of going to.
