Hello Guys!

I got my 60g PS3 in May 2007.

Unfortunately, I have gotten the Yellow Light of Death.

I called Sony for service and they wanted to charge me 150 dollars to have it fixed.

I complained that i wanted to speak to someone from corporate and then i was given the phone to one of the highest available managers who then finally said," okay, we will fix it for you this one time for free."

I asked him why this is a problem and he told me that the Tech department realized it was a Heat Sink problem.  The yellow light of death is a fail safe mode when the ps3 starts so it doesnt ruin any sensitive components.

Technically, the ps3 is playable, but the PS3's own programming won't let the user start the operating system on the count that it was overheating.

I had been playing Little Big Planet EVERYDAY since it came and left the console on for about 8 hours a day after classes and work with my GF.

4 hours for me, 2 hours for her, and about 2 hours or more for bluray Movies(HULK, Sleeping Beauty,Cars,Ironman, etc)

So what i have realized is that the Yellow light of Death and the Red ring of death are practically the same thing.

I have been playing so much PS3 than ever before that its ridiculous!  so many good games.

360 owners probably play non stop too and thats why RROD is as rampant.  because there are so many good games.

so as far as avoiding the YLOD, don't play too much PS3!  Perhaps follow the rule and give the console a 15 minute break for every hour you play.

I know its hard when you make LBP levels to just STOP creating, but its probably wise.

Ill get my PS3 back in 1 week

Hit my up for LBP.

PSN ID:  Ari2000.

Check out LBP levels.

Yup - you are exactly right the YLOD and RROD are virtually the same and are caused by the same issue (heating) (one happens more often statistically than the other though).

It does make me laugh when fanboys cite the RROD though - as the YLOD has unfortunately become much more common of late.

It's too bad you had to experience it first hand - but hey at least they fixed it for free even though it is out of warranty - that's a HUGE bonus. :)

why does it make you laugh when it is a valid point. the 360 hardware fails much more often than the ps3's. i dont condone fanboyism of any kind but i dont discount everything that can make either side look bad.

I've played my PS3 for up to 14 hours before and it's starting to act up. It's over heated to the point the fan kicked into overdrive. I put a game in the other day and my PS3 didn't reconize it. If I get the yellow light of death I'm not going to be one happy customer. I specificaly bought the PS3 because of the problems Xbox is having. I wanted something that would last till resident evil 5 comes out.

I've had my launch 60GB on for over 14 hours straight on several instances, 2 of which were the weekend following the launch. No issues.

The reason for the perceiveid increase in hardware failures is because there are more PS3's in the wild, statisitcally demanding scale with an equivalent number of manufactiring defect.

Think you may have misunderstood what I was saying - or more than likely I wasn't real clear - like I said statistically one happens more than the other (what I meant is the RROD does happen more than the YLOD). What makes me laugh is when fanboys (not talking about you) act like problems are non-existent on the PS3 which isn't the case.

I agree about the fanboyism stuff. I've been gaming for a long time and the 360 isnt the only system to ever have problems. I bought a gamecube that was defective right out of the box and over all it was supose to be a reliable system.

Yup - ALL electronics have some level of issues - it's the nature of the beast. However I will say I couldn't be more satisfied with my PS3's performance. Then again I haven't had an RROD since the 360's launch either.

***Crossing my fingers that I didn't just jinx myself. :P

I actually had more issues with my GameCube than any other system I've had too - weird. Actually I take that back - I had a heck of a time with the 3DO when it launched too - then again having a CD-ROM in your console was a new concept at the time. :)

well the thing about the rrod on 360 is not that it happens. problems and defects even wear and tear happen too all man made things. But what makes the rrod such a huge thing is the huge numbers that it happens. Its not just a defect its a disign flaw. this as been proven. M$ just cramed to much into to small of a space and placed iirc the CPU or GPU right underthe the disk drive. just like if you were to build a high end overclocked pc and stuff it inside a case the size of a shoe box lol. there are a lot of people on there 3rd or 4th 360. one guy is even on his 13th. sounds like bs i know but kotaku did a wright up on it. the guy even recorded his conversation with a M$ servive rep were she read off all his returns. of course i would think that would be a very rare thing to have that many systems go out on you but stranger things have happend. At least m$ has a great warrenty policy now. i think its BS that sony does not stand behind there systems longer than thay do. When a company builds a product thay should build it well enough that thay have confedence enough in its reliabilty to give you at least a 3 year parts and labor. 5 years would be better ;) or warrenty it threw the production life of the system. ;P

I couldnt talk to anyone. It would let me i tried every option to get to a person but every option i chose the computer voice told me to visit blahblahblah.com How did you get ahold of someone. I called there technical support line at 1800-345-7669. I called numerous times but couldnt talk to anyone. so again how did you get ahold of someone?

if you want to talk to someone and not listen to the automated voice, you press  "0" for operator and it will take you directly to their tech support.

BUT, i want to warn you that it took me about 30 minutes of complaining to get past the low level workers to talk to upper management.

At first, the low level workers denied me coverage seeing as how i was out of warranty, but then i kept asking to speak to their manager.

then when a manager came and couldn't help me, i demanded for the next highest manager.

you just have to understand that the low level workers have no power to give me a free fix on my ps3.  they are just doing their job buy charging you money.  thats why you go to upper management where they have the authority to make the call on helping me out or not for free.

By the way, i also mentioned to them that i own a 52 xbr3 bravia, sony ericssons, sony memory sticks, psp, sony stereo, etc.  i wanted them to know that i was a big supporter of their products.

You know why so many launch demo kiosks were down? Because of this. Constantly running in a small enclosed case will overheat it. That's why I keep my PS3 wide in the open and can breath.

This thread had a lot of promise for providing good information, but because you chose to bring up the 360 RROD issue in it for a comparison, I have to close it.

This is a serious rule guys. Some of the responses have already demonstrated why the rule is necessary and in place. Don't violate it if you don't want the more fruitful aspects of your discussion brought to a halt, or worse receive a suspension for more derogatory and trollish comparisons.
