My UK Launch 60gig PS3 got the YLOD at 20:37 while making my Hardcore character on Fallout. Made this thread for people to tell me what to do and why it broke.

Screen went black and it triple beeped when I finished assigning the Assigning my special skills and the red light appeared and started flashing. I waited for 10 mins and tried to start the ps3 green light went on (no blue) for about 5 seconds then yellow light appeared and it went back to flashing red light.

Any help/ yelling at me for not doing *insert thing here* appreciated.

Well you have lost all your data no matter what. Its gone. Is there a game stuck in it? its easy to get out, andI've heard YLOD are due to some sort of Faulty power source. I don't believe it though. And this has happened to me twice.when you buy a new one get a slim.

Heres how you get the game out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgFQMRQD-iY

You could break it up into each componenet and flog it all on ebay, disc drive, power supply, motherboard... Should cover a reasonable amount on a new one.

There is actually away to fix it, BUT you have to take it apart and put it back together to get to the Piece that has busted and Need some tools. It will most likely bust again in about a month, though you would have an opportunity to back everything up.

There's really no reason to try and fix it or send it in since this will just happen again to your PS3. The best thing to do is to go out and buy a new slim.

So sell parts, Buy Slim. I basically knew as soon as the flashing red light appeared all my data was gone ... When I get a slim can I still access my Old PSN account or do i have to make a new one ?

No as long as you have your Password, you can access it fine. And this is just my opinion but I doubt you'll really have much luck selling it.

Well sony will return your game, just make sure you let them know over the phone and fill out the sheet of paper when the box arrives. I got my Spiderman Shattered Dimensions and the 320GB HDD back a week later with my system.

Okay I have bad news. After some searching. It doesn't work for 60gb and so far I can't find a fix. There is the other way though, The one involving a hammer and Heavy duty plyers.

If it's that weird fan cycle thing, you have to hold the old 60 and 20 gigs with the side vents pointing down towards the floor to do it. At least that's what I remember.

Man you can get your data man. Don't listen to half the people on there. I got ylod of death twice and I have not lost any data. This is what I did : I went on youtube and looked up how to fix ps3 ylod and I found a video from gilksy. Its not expensive to fix all what you need is thermal paste(artic silver for example), Screw Driver Set, Torx Head Screwdriver, and a heatgun. That will not cost you that much and plus its items you maybe able to use again around the house. The video is amazingly easy I mean super easy followed it my ps3 cranked back up I plugged in an external HDD and went to backup ps3 and all my data was backed up. Now this next step you don't have to follow I did it because I had a 320 gb in my 60 gb. So I took out the 160gb from the slim I bought put in my 320gb and then downloaded 3.50 software off the playstation site on to my external HDD. Once I cranked up my slim I saw screen saying needs 3.50 software and press start and select did that it loaded the software. From there I went to restore and it restored all my save files and trophies which are the only things important to me.

My PSN games and themes weren't there but If I wish I can just redownload them all didn't really care about that. I also had to reinstall any games that neededan install. Like for example I think it was star wars fu I needed and install for that so I installed the game again but my save files were intact. So bud try the fix back up your data is easy to do and that way you won't have to start over! Good luck I mean your in a situation where if you want your data you don't have any other option so give it a shot just take your time and it you can do it.

Also I would like to ADD the fan trick does not work on 60gb models but once you fix the ylod and turn on your system your game will come out and this is a temporary fix and not permanent so work fast in getting your game and data off the system.

The fan test does not work on 60gb ps3s and has been made a fact by numerous people who own 60gb models. I have myself have tried it among hundeds of other people so again the fan test does not work on the 60gb models. It was stated in alot of the ylod fix videos that it does not work on 60gb. Futhermore it damages your system and why would you want to cause more damage to it. The only way that hundreds of other people have discussed on forums is doing the ylod fix or sending it too sony. The fan test works for 40gbs, 80gbs and up. That video posted does not hold any truth since many people i personally know and talked to on forums discussed the fan test does not work on 60gbs. And Even if you do the fan test your ps3 data is still not backed up and saved !! So just do the ylod fix it could last a few days or months and you will get your game out and be able to back up your data. So TC just try to fix it yourself back up your data and buy a slim. case closed

I'm sorry to hear that mate. My blu-ray disk drive stopped working in 2008 on my original 60GB model. All you can do is send it to Sony. I understand it's around 169$ which includes shipping & receiving.

I still use my 60GB model to this day and also got a Slim for living room as Blu-ray player primary.

I have to admit I do enjoy the 60/80 GB models designs much more then slim so unless you really want to buy it I would suggest you just fix your MGS4 model and when it comes back - head over to Sony Style store and purchase 3 years warranty for 60$.

Peace of mind even thou my PS2 is 8 years old and still kicking alive. ;)

samething happened to me with my 60 gb ps3 only an hr^ in to playing MOH and it's still stuck in it. So would I still be able to back up Pictures and videos after I attempt the fix? And would I be able to retire them on the new ps3 I get? And if my friend gave me borderlands dlc I wouldn't be able to back up and restore it? Thanksss in adv!

When I restored my ps3 on my slim the only content I was missing was PSN games and game installs. Everything else was on there. So if you do the fix you will get you MOH game out and you will will get your pictures, videos, and save files. I backed up my information using an external HDD but there is another way called a Data Utility Transfer I believe thats what it is called. They say that allows you to get even more information all what you need is both systems working and a ethernet cable so if you dont want to buy an external HDD get the 60gb system working by doing temporary fix go google data utility transfer and it will direct you to sony's site and it will prompt you how to do it successfully. If you have any more questions just leave me a message be happy to answer. Also if your doing the fix (thermal paste) radioshack screwdriver set, torx head screwdriver, and heatgun lowes or home depot.

well the obvious solution would be to say that fallout caused the YLOD like 99% of the people on the forums and try suing them for a ps3. Seriously though, id recommend doing the quick fix and backing up your data, then either trading it in to gamestop while it still works or send it in to sony since they'll let you trade for a slim (i forget how much they charge you)

To save yourself some time and pain, you're better off buying a new PS3, preferably a slim.
