So naturally I'm stoked about this game, but I've never played any of the others. Where can I catch up? Can I read the plot somewhere? What order are the games in when it comes to storyline?

mgs 3 snake eater

metal gear

metal gear2

metal gear solid

mgs 2

the first three are all on the MGS3 subsistance game. if you really wanna know it, wiki it but even that will be confusing, trust me you have time to play them all, just get a gameshark with inf. life so you can zip through the story

It's still a few months before MGS4 comes out, so why not play through the rest of the series? None of the games are terribly long (MGS3 is the longest to date), and they're pretty easy to find. Play them in series order, though. Start with MGS1 on PS1 or Twin Snakes on GC, MGS2 on PS2 or Xbox, MGS3 Subsitence on PS2, then Portable Ops on PSP.

MGS3 chronologically is the first game, then Portable Ops is after that. The original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 were on the MSX, but there are versions of those that you can play on Subsistence. However, MGS1 and Twin Snakes have text recaps of those games, so it's not necessary to play through them.

Totally agree.

Reading someone's interpretation of the MGS story line is very confusing... You'll need your own interpretation. So hunt the games down. It shouldn't cost you too much money and they are well worth it. Experience one of the greatest series in the History of gaming.

I also agree. Most of these games are fairly inexpensive, and playing through them is much more rewarding than just reading the story.

OMG...you've really missed out. MG is one of the most important video game franchises known to man; it's been around since NES and is the granddaddy of the stealth action genre. It really had it's heyday in the PS1 era, but if you have a PS3 with backwards compatibility get yourself a copy of MGS3, you're probably going to love it..

Hey.. :( Growing up, (and still) rated M games aren't allowed in the house (I'm 18 haha)

That rule still applies, I'm just very slick. Growing up I was limited to hot shots golf, coolboarders, nba in the zone 98, and the like. They were even iffy on NFS hot pursuit, because I was 'fleeing from police.' They've gotten a bit lenient with age, but the M rule applies. But alas, I'm a sneaky guy :P

Play the games. I recently played the 3 mgs games and it took me no more than a few weeks. I play at a pretty slow pace and I got both mgs1 endings. Even if you play a little bit at a time like I did it shouldn't take more than a month. Heh and you get to experience all the crotch grabby and pee pants goodness.

Play through the games, and then if you still don't understand it terribly (I didn't) get on wikipedia or something similar.

Once you've got the main gist of the story, you can begin to see why its often regarded as the best series of games ever made.

Play them in the order they were released. The different re-releases can be confusing, but I've listed them below. The games on the same line of text are re-releases of the same game. Each line break is the next in the series:

Metal Gear Solid (PSOne) or MGS: The Twin Snakes (GameCube) - this is a remake of MGS1 with MGS2-like gameplay

MGS2: Sons of Liberty (PS2) or MGS2: Substance (PS2 or XBOX)

MGS3: Snake Eater (PS2) or MGS3: Subsistence (PS2)

The Subsistence version of MGS3 includes the original Metal Gear (1987) and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (1990), both of which were released on the MSX game console. You really don't need to play these, but they're nice to have if you're a fan of the series.

EDIT:

I forgot about Portable Ops. Some people don't think it's necessary, but I really enjoyed the story. It filled in some of the holes between Snake Eater and the rest of the series. I highly recommend that you play it if you have a PSP.

Fishyesque

In general, there are two versions of each game. MGS1 on PS1 was the original, and there's also MGS VR Missions that adds nothing to the story but is something to have fun with. In Japan (and possible PAL territories), this was packed in with later versions of MGS and called Metal Gear Solid Integral. The Twin Snakes, exclusively for GC, is a remake that is essentially the original game running on the Metal Gear Solid 2 engine, meaning that it has better graphics and more complex play control.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is the original version of this game, exclusively for PS2. Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance came out for Xbox and PS2, and this is essentially the original game with VR missions and other things to fool around with... the only difference regarding the main game is that Substance has one extra cutscene, but it doesn't add so much to the plot, rather is just "how he got from there to here."

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater originally came out for the PS2, then Subsistence is basically the director's cut. No story or gameplay sequences were added, but Subsistence has a much, much better camera, making the gameplay much better (see the GS review for more details-- it's rare that a re-release actually scores higher than the original, but it made all the difference here). This game also has playable versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 for the MSX, as I said before, but the main draw here is the better camera controls.

Portable Ops is a side-story (since it's not a numbered game), but it's still canon and helps to bridge the gap between MGS3 and the rest of the games. Portable Ops + is an expansion pack of sorts to this, but don't be fooled-- it doesn't have the original game in it, and thus has no story. It's like the VR Missions of MGS1.

Hope that helps, and I'll also add a timeline to this along with the main characters.

1964- Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater/Subsistence

1970- Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops

1995- Metal Gear

1999- Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake

2005- Metal Gear Solid / The Twin Snakes

2007/2009- Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty/ Substance

2014- Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

Note: Sorry to add to an already long post, but I should mention that Metal Gear: Ghost Babel (known as Metal Gear Solid in the US) for the Game Boy Color and the Metal Gear Ac!d games for the PSP aren't officially in the storyline.

So, if I wanted to catch up on the story by playing the games in the order they came out, you would recommend:

Metal Gear Solid 1

Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance

Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops

Just a few questions: Am I missing anything that isn't just another version of the same game? Is that the right order according to when the games came out? Are each of the versions I picked the "better" version of the game?

Those are all you need to get the story line down(you probably don't need to even play Portable Ops though, its story isn't very important). As for MGS2: Substance, it is rare and costs a lot more than a normal copy of MGS2. Plus, the core game isn't any better than MGS2's; Substance just add's corny crap like a MGS/Tony Hawk skating minigame.

Either try playing all the metal gear games, or search on youtube and google videoes of a person going all the way through them. None of the games are all that long, so I could see there be videos like that.

But with the exception of the original metal gear and metal gear 2 games *on subsistence, which can be hard to find these days*, you can probably get all the games for under 50$. Mgs2 goes used for 5$. Metal gear solid, could be a pain to find *And I reccomend the ps1 or pc versions. Twin snakes, didn't feel right to me. The voice actors felt bored* And mgs3 should be easy, unless you go for the reccomended subsistence version.

The only one I don't really reccomend you play, is portable ops. I didn't really like it all that much, with exception of the ending bosses. Its not exactly crucial to the story anyways. The game itself, just doesn't feel like a true mgs game.
