Oh man, here we go. In no particular order (except for the first one):
- Bioshock
Bioshock is an astoundingly beautiful game. The atmosphere is second to none, and it remains to be one of the most gorgeous looking games of all time. I remember when I first started the game, after the airplane crash when it lets you loose into the water and you're surrounded by flames. The visuals were so unbelievable that I thought I was watching a cutscene until I accidentally hit the analog stick and saw that my character had moved a little bit. My jaw was completely dropped throughout the entire opening sequence of Bioshock, discovering the lighthouse and eventually discovering Rapture. Those moments are uncomparable to anything else in gaming today for me, and it marked the first time I've ever fallen in love with a game in my life. I was spellbinded. Make no mistake: Bioshock has the biggest place in my heart as far as gaming goes.
- GTA IV
I remember when I eagerly sat at my computer throughout the night, waiting and waiting for Gamespot's review of GTA IV to pop up on the homepage after hitting the refresh button time after time. I watched countless previews and gameplay footage just waiting for the moment. I didn't quite have the money to go pick it up at midnight yet, so I was dying to see what kind of reviews the game would get. Finally it happened: I clicked "refresh" and there it was. A perfect 10/10. I couldn't believe it, all the reviews could do nothing but praise the game. When I was able to pick up the game 3 days after release, I immediately realized why the game deserved all the praise. Grand Theft Auto IV features some of the best writing, characters, voice acting, gameplay, and environments in gaming history. The new and improved Liberty City absolutely blew me away, making me feel like a small part of a massive living and breathing city. Driving around the city for the first time was easily a top gaming experience for me this gen.
- Halo 3
Okay, okay we're on the PS3 boards. So what. I couldn't wait a damn SECOND for Halo 3's release when I sat in line outside of gamestop starting at 9 PM. I was freezing my butt off, I lived in Canada at the time. Almost my entire group of friends were getting the game, including many I had back in the states, so I couldn't wait to get home and get online with them and started kicking ass. I finally got home and played my first round with 3 of my friends, and it immediately felt like the good old days of Halo 2 back on the Xbox. It brought us all back together in a weird gaming way. Just pure fun.
- Skyrim
Escaping the flaming ruins of the dragon's attack in the introduction sequence. Supremely epic, it made me realize that I was about to dig into one of the most deep and phenomenal role playing game experiences I've ever known. Since the release, I have put in well over 20 hours of gametime into the game, and I've barely, BARELY scratched the surface of what this massive game has to offer. All of the random factions, from the thieves guild to the dark brotherhood, are complex and intriguing, and I just cannot put the game down. I even bought the strategy guide (which is thicker than some encyclopedias i've seen), and that's something I never really do because I usually like to figure everything out for myself. In this game, I want to make sure I see EVERYTHING. I want to complete every quest and discover all the secrets and meet all the characters. I was instantly hooked.
If you read all of this, then you are awesome and a true gamer and I really appreciate it. These are some of my most engaging moments in not only this generation of gaming, but of all time.
