So there are all sorts of settings for games anymore. However, there are really close to none that are pirate themed. I find this surprising since the popularity of POTC. Surely one company would have decided to make a really good open world pirate game by now. I can definitely see it working, and after the success of the western themed RDR and through the AC games it's obvious that people are more than willing to play a game in a past setting if it's done right. Does anyone else think it would be cool to play as a pirate in a lengthy open world game, and if so what kind of things would you like to see in it?

Yeah, it would be fun to have a game sorta like gta but in the sea, and you can steal peoples boats.

But that's my point. Why not have a true pirate era themed game. I'm sure you can count rogue galaxy as a sort of space pirate game (and it's a rather good game), but it's not a true pirate game. I think with our current gen systems the graphics would really suit a pirate game since a lot of it relies on travel through water. It could be like AC where there are a number of cities you could travel to, or really just one open world so there wouldn't be any load times between areas.

One of my favorite games is Sid Meier's Pirates!, though it isn't on the PS3, and doesn't have much to do with your question. :P

I would love to have an open world pirate game for consoles (as long as it was done right), and I think it would have a large audience with the popularity of pirates right now. Though it would probably have to have a fast travel option because sailing around on a slow ship would get boring after a while. Conflicts between different pirate crews, pillaging islands, capturing and looting merchant ships, treasure hunting, recruiting people for your crew, epic naval battles, etc.

I just think it would be quite fun.

I'd love to see a decent pirate game. I liked Sid Miers Pirates! but I would definitely like to see a more serious take on the genre, and less of that cartoony feel. Open-world would fit perfectly, as others have said.

Would be pretty interesting. Maybe have a dedicated group system where you can party up with friends and form your own pirate crew. Collect supplies and weapons, build your own ship, and all that pirate stuff. I'd buy it.

I never played the reboot of sid meirs pirates, but I played the original Sid Mier's Pirates on a 286 XT and loved that game to death. It came out in 1987. I would love to have a really good pirates game that isn't cartoony, and isn't fantasy based.

I've played the remake of Pirate's!, excellent game. From what I've seen of the original (just YT videos of gameplay) the remake seems to stay true to it. On topic, I'd love a new and original pirate game.

Honestly, it would be a huge task to undertake. A developer would have a number of important things to work around, like water physics (and the actual look of the water), boat/ship physics, probably a living and changing economy, making ships fun to operate given their slow speed and long travel times (you can't just skip every time you set sail, or have a sea battle every time). Then there would be whether they would add layers of micro-management to it (ie crew and supplies/cargo). Multiple types of battles (ship vs ship, crew vs crew, both at the same time?, atttacking ports from sea, attacking places on foot etc).

There are other things too that I can't think of right now, but again, it would be a huge task.

However, if a dev could get everything right, whilst not skimping on content, and giving it a good polish, it would be one hell of a game.

edit: thought of a few more: finding a balance between swordplay and gunplay. And how it would work when the player with a sword comes up against enemies with guns. Also, an actual swashbuckling system instead of just slashing until someone goes dowm.
