Wow, sad day for right wing conspiracy theory nuts who have made it their life's passion to parrot Russian social media troll farm talking points. Too bad your hyperbole meter blew long before y'all acted like wearing masks and getting vaccinated was akin to living in Nazi Germany.

Yeah, I am not a fan of the governments of the world looking to rein in online speech. But I can also see why it is done. Bad Actors are exploiting this like crazy, and as a result, we are getting the online discourse we have now.

And between Jan 6 and how badly the west acted in regards to COVID. It is clear what goes on online has real world consequences.

How this thread even got serious replies is amazing. Why would anyone believe any of these characterizations of a gov't initiative to fight disinformation is amazing. Wow. Will you guys will argue anything with these right-wing conspiracy goofballs?

The Germans had that mentality, when Goebbels headed Nazi Germany's propaganda department which sought to control information in order to manipulate public thinking. Or when the Soviets told their people it was for their own good. China controls their state-run media and ensures no other viewpoints are permitted in the public. Iran does something similar. But, you feel you understand why it's done, right? It MUST be for their own good, right? After all, they tell you it is, and government wouldn't lie, right? LMFAO, you don't even care what the government overreaches, you just convince yourself it's for some common good, they have a reason. (but only if someone if you like was elected).

LOL, Godwin's Law. Read Lamprey's post again. The one I was replying to.

Also, understanding WHY something is done is not necessarily agreeing to it. But then again, not understanding your opponents positions are a key tenet in your debate strategy.

In case you are wondering what I am doing. I am trying to think of a way to get the results the governments want, WITHOUT resorting the these extremes they seem to be going for. But compromise is for the weak eh?

You wouldn't want Russian or Chinese state propaganda spy accounts banned, censored, or flagged?

Wait a second. I have an idea! I know how you will support this, just pretend those Kremlin bots are LGBQT or Black. Then you'll want it censored right away, FL/TX style!

I would love it if all these disinformation peddlers would be held accountable for the garbage they spew, just for once.

@girlusocrazy said:

@HoolaHoopMan: @zaryia:

The idea that the government is moderating anything is a strawman. Twitter and Facebook and whatever other platform that engages with the government is doing the moderation.

There is no mandate to give the government administrative powers over companies in the private sector to perform moderation.

There is no mandate for any company to engage with the government.

There is no mandate for any company to remove any posts.

This is all at the company's discretion.

We have already seen the government combat misinformation online in the form of suggesting resources that provide evidence based counterpoints to the social media company. These resources are indicated by the social media company's own moderators on posts that the company deems necessary to address.

There is no direct action by the government. There is no mandate for compliance by the government. There is no legal mechanism to implement these things. Such an attempt to create and enforce this type of mandate would quickly fail in the courts.

This is complete fear mongering.

This is pretty much always the case. Governments have been going against online disinformation for years, if not decades now. But the way it always manifested itself has always been through anti-disinformation campaigns, rather than censorship.

This fearmongering I feel is probably stemmed from black and white thinking. Where they fail to acknowledge all other means to deal with misinformation. I saw a campaign from my government a while back, on healthcare countering misinformation campaigns.

It will be interesting to see if I get any replies to the sentence I put above your comment. Because I do have a hunch people will jump to conclusions as per usual, while ignoring surrounding context.

Okay I googled ministry of truth and as expected it's the far right reacting to this....."USA's Department of Home Security (DHS) is setting up a new Disinformation Governance Board, reported Politico Playbook. The board is being set up to coordinate countering misinformation related to homeland security. It will reportedly focus 'specifically' on irregular migration and Russia."

Nothing burger, just more disinformation from the right.

Hmm, coincidence more links have been made between Hunter Biden's business associates on some of his foreign deals, and Joe Biden himself? I remember when Twitter tried to censor that.

You absolutely do, with every bit of support you provide Trump et al and the Republican party, which voted enmasse to not only decertify the election results, but still disseminates a narrative that the 2020 election was stolen.

Simply put, you cannot claim innocence or ignorance on the topic when you still support the traitorous people behind the event and conspiracy.

Did he say it "was a lie," or did he agree with over 50 former intelligence officials that it “has all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation.” because those are two different things.

So then the intelligence officials who are determining what is and isn't disinformation cannot be trusted to perform their jobs adequately, and honestly?

I don't need them to make that determination. Facts made it. You're trying to excuse someone pushing disinformation by saying they were agreeing with all these intelligence agencies, is that the same pass you're going to give government when they censor legitimate scandals that are damaging to their political interests? Because a few agencies said something, it's okay to to assume that's fact, and silence people based on that?...

Do you want stories they deem disinformation, that we now know to be true to be swept under the rug so you won't have to risk the other side you hate winning an election, or would you rather have transparency and honesty in government?

Well there's your mistake, you're confusing conclusions with observations, and then you're claiming they intended to convey a conclusion. You're misinforming yourself.

I don't give a **** what you think they intended. The outcome is what matters. Be it malice, or incompetence, those were government agencies spreading disinformation to protect the politcal elite class. That are the people you think want to control information for YOUR safety?

Then I'll break it down in a clear, and simple manner even you can understand. Those intelligence agencies that tried to claim the Biden laptop was disinformation, when we know in actuality that it was not. Were they doing so to protect political interests of the ruling elite? Or were they simply incompetent?

Actually you don't know anything about the laptop at all. For one thing there is no chain of evidence. And oddly enough the guy that initially had the laptop says stuff on there wasn't on there when he turned it in. Obviously it's NOT what you say it is and nothing can be done about it in any case because again, NO CHAIN OF EVIDENCE.

Now that is a good question. Given most of the fake news organizations he and others in here like to deem credible has already admitted to the legitimacy of that laptop, you really have to dig deep into some real conspiracy theory shit to find something like that. Typing "chain of evidence" as a keyword only yields a single news article that actually describes the established and legitimate chain of evidence behind it. So my guess? He probably got it off of Twitter or Reddit, or pulled it out of his ass on the spot.

Quit ironic that we're back to getting fed false news and propoganda....by the same people complaining about tapering such things in the OP. I'm actually surprised at how long it took. Usually we get a 'Hunter Biden' reference on page 1 of any new thread on Biden/Trump.
