Congressman refuses to say if Americans are entitled to eat

From a recent NPR interview with Rep. Adrian Smith, a Republican (shocker!) from Nebraska. Here's the relevant bit:

SMITH: Well, I think that anytime we're talking about food and nutrition, it's an important topic and especially for people in need. We do not want to leave our most vulnerable without nutrition. And looking at that, we always want to keep that in mind. Now, we do know that the nutrition title of the farm bill is the largest one when it comes to the dollars. And so even very minor shifts can be very effective in terms of fiscal policy and, at the same time, make sure that we do not harm the most vulnerable among us.

SIMON: Well, let me ask you this bluntly - is every American entitled to eat?

SMITH: Well, they - nutrition, obviously, we know is very important. And I would hope that we can look to...

SIMON: Well, not just important, it's essential for life. Is every American entitled to eat?

SMITH: It is essential. It is essential.

SIMON: So is every American entitled to eat, and is food stamps something that ought to be that ultimate guarantor?

SMITH: I think that we know that, given the necessity of nutrition, there could be a number of ways that we could address that.

Is this the Republican party in 2017? A party who won't even say that Americans have a right to eat food? The kicker is that Mr. Smith also describes himself as "pro-life"... so wrap your head around that.

This is definitely not surprising.

Theyve already managed to do this with health care, education, human rights basically.... this was the next step.

he has to keep saying "nutrition" like it's something you can prescribe or buy in the hardware store or earn through work or something.

Welcome to the new third world of the United States: take away the multi-million/billion dollar companies and their few big private earners, and what do you really have left in this country? Jack shit. Crumbling infrastructure, people literally starving in a country that constantly produces a surplus of food and throws away millions of tons of food a year and exports even more, sickening displays of waste, complete lack of concern for what's important ("covfefe" being a perfect example...)...

There's a reason why conservative comedy almost always flops and fails. Their stances simply don't make for many laughs. It's too negative and dark in nature. The material it lends too isn't going to get a crowd cheering and laughing.

I don't know what you're talking about. I find the Party of Family Values in its current form absolutely hilarious. What with Trump as its marque representative (just in general) and these clowns who are willing to parse whether or not eating is a right. Which, I guess if I'm being totally honest, probably isn't a right, at least not in the same way that buying a gun is. That, I think we can all agree is a god-given (but only the white Christian god) right. Get out of here with your food nonsense!
