Do you think the democratic party should rename/rebrand itself?

I'm talking to true progressives here. Not these dimwitted, fanboy, midatlantic state types.

During the 1800's, the democratic party was the party of slavery. That's a horrific legacy. It's like the confederate statues down in the south. Should be torn down and stripped from the history books

Even in recent history: JFK and LBJ were horrible people. They lied to the american public and involved us in an unjust war in vietnam. Bill Clinton was a serial sex offender. Me2 anyone? Now, you can say, what about these republican wackos? But we all know they are nuts. Nothing will change that. They dont care. But progressives put the self in self righteous and we need better representation. I say we go as the progressive party for the future. Can i get an amen? Or a namaste at least.

Don't really care. Call themselves whatever they want, just put forward better policy and people and I will vote for them.

JFK was willing to die in order to do what he thought was right.

Are you willing to die for what you believe in?

JFK was wiling to die for the oppression of the vietnamese people. I am not. I think they should have self determination. How about you? Are you willing to die to oppress them? Are you willing to die to kill of tens of thousands of them for colonialism? Talk to me, brah.

it would not matter.

the problem is not democrats as much as it is the millions if not billions of dollars that have been pumped into Right Wing 'think tanks' that have shaped AM radio for decades and now infiltrated everywhere else.

If democrats had the kind of money for basically pushing propaganda was much as the Right does we would not have these problems

@sonicare: What are your thoughts on a different but related possibility: going transpolitical on specific issues.

Could enough Republican senators, say the Libertarian leaning Rand Paul for example, be peeled of to pass drug law reform or judicial reform?

I hope so. Rand and Corey Booker had the right idea on judicial reform.

'll say this, too. On most issues, progressives are on the right side of history. They just need to drop the loyalty to party, and stick more to the ideal.

@sonicare: As for rebranding, it's unnecessary. It's a two party system, and the Democrats have the stringer brand with who they need long term. The GOP brand is toxic outside of their slowly shrinking base. By the time Dems rebranded their party (rebranding takes awhile) it would be unnecessary. It might even do more harm than good.

YOu are correct that the republicans are a shrinking brand. By being anti-immigrant, specifically mexican-americans (who are traditionally conservative btw), they have doomed themselves to insignificance.

It's time for them to start grooming new leadership, and for them to retire some of the more senior members.

As for a total reinvention and rebranding? No, don't think that is necessary.

@mattbbpl said:

That's something I am for. The Democrats have the moral high ground (Hey! Don't laugh! :P), but they need to fight smarter. I think being more moderate on common sense and financial issues, and taking a "big picture" approach towards the more liberal stuff (i.e. slow and steady, not "WE NEED IT NOW!") would be a good way to gain a lot more votes and alienate fewer people.

There's a grey area out there that is not being exploited at all.

They also need to work on their emotional appeal. Democrats try to sound sincere and they just come off fake and shallow. There needs to be someone that truly believes what they are selling. Ocasio-Cortez is the first politician I actually feel is in it for the good fight, despite me not agreeing with a lot of her ideas. Kamala Harris is another one. Maybe Tammie Duckworth, too; veteran, double-amputee, and a bit of a rebel but also well respected by both sides.

The democratic party will destroy themselves if they do not separate themselves from Sanders and Cortez and the other people on the far left progressive side.

Other than that they just need to stick with people who are not Clinton or Sanders and they will be fine.

The reason why Trump won isn't because of Trump. He did capture some of the Americans and what he was saying, but it mainly had to do with the democratic party. When you have people such as Hillary, Sanders, Waters, etc. just talking nonsense then it really turns off people from the democratic party. It really needs someone fresh to really lighten the party and want the help America first.

Is this a serious question?

That's a bit like saying countries need to rename themselves because they've done bad things in the past.

Since Democrats are no longer center right, then yes they should call themselves something different. I'm a former Democrat and I don't recognize modern Democrats anymore. I sided with Trump because his politics are still center right, except for his anti-war stance which I'm open too. We've been in the middle east for too long.
