Will they do it? Or will the senate pass something at the last minute? Who will get blamed? My guess is that republicans will get blamed, but only if they can't get all 51 members on board.

http://www.businessinsider.com/government-shutdown-senate-vote-fails-after-no-trump-gop-democrat-deal-2018-1

A key vote on a short-term government funding bill failed in the Senate.

The vote's failure all but guarantees a government shutdown at midnight.

Democrats opposed the bill because it did not codify the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Some Republicans voted against the bill because it did not provide enough certainty to the military.

They're going to shut down would be my guess. I would have thought people would blame Democrats, but they seem to be blaming Republicans now (could change once they start repeating the whole "Democrats shut the gubbermint down ta help ileegulz!" talking point). The fact that this is another in a long line of CRs rather than an actual budget could put a tick in the Dems' column in that debate, but I wouldn't think most people pay attention to that level of political minutia.

Stealing this from twitter

Shut down over 2 manufactured crises. DACA was not a thing, CHIP was not a thing. Trump made one into a crisis, GOP made the other. Just fund CHIP, like always, accept bipartisan agreement, like always. But no...GOP can only govern through crisis and blackmail.

Kellyanne Conway was just recently on Hannity explaining how Trump is using CHIP as a political hostage

Kellyanne Conway on Hannity: "You've got Donald Trump, our president, very cleverly having the Democrats be against CHIP, a children's health plan"

And that makes bingo. We are now officially groundhogsdaying the Clinton administration.

Only instead of having fun with it or using our foresight to gain some kind of advantage or to impress romantic interests, everything it just progressively getting dumber and more mean.

Don´t forget the Obama administration.

But there are no "winners" in this and the American people lost out because 2 sides are too stubborn to think of anyone but themselves.

Lol bull fucking shit. Bush tried almost the exact same thing and all that happened was corporations buying into their own stock to inflate their stock price. Not a single penny of that crap trickled down or was put to good use.

@n64dd: but their protection has wide popular support and a bipartisan deal to protect them was already reached and even trump himself supported it at first... but he changed his mind at the last minute and shifted goal posts because he doesn’t know how to make deals or negotiate.

One problem there. Most of them are not kids or infants any longer.

The DACA does not apply to people recently illegally in the US.

So young adults and adults do have the capacity to make informed decisions, and if they respected the country they want to call home, they would apply by legal means or go back to their home.

Wait how is that a bad thing? A party political party moving in lock step isn't a sign of a healthy party much less a healthy country.

Besides, the fact that political parties do not move in lock step allows for the minority party to wield some serious political power. How do you think Obamacare went from Universal Healthcare to the Republican alternative to Universal Healthcare? The idea that the Democrats are impotent simply because they are only 49% of the senate is asinine. They were impotent when they were 59%. We should seriously stop excusing it.

@Jacanuk: So what you want is for these people, who spent basically their entire lives here, grew up here, built their lives here, have jobs and families here, to voluntarily leave that all behind, spend a weekend “where they came from” to and then *NOT* get back in?

Your position would be more reasonable if the “right way” to immigrate in was actually a viable option. In all likelihood if these people did what you say they should they’ll never be allowed back in. They’ll spend years or decades on a wait list. What’s the point? They may as well stay here and hope for the best because voluntarily leaving amounts to the same thing as being deported.

From what I read the Democrats were trying to get funding for CHIP, get DACA into law, Puerto Rico disaster funding, and boosting the budget for military and overall spending. Schumer was even willing to fund the wall. Why does that make them "shit"?

Making demands like that is what makes them shit. When they know the cost of a shutdown.

You know and they know that the Republicans would never agree to those terms when at the same time they have a gun to their head.

The Democrats are playing Russian Roulette without it costing them anything.

No, I want them to apply through legal avenues. Like everyone else who comes to America and want to make a life here.

Remember everyone is created equal and DACA was a huge f you to people who spend years and thousands of dollars on legal ways to get to stay in the US and that is not what America is about.

@Jacanuk: "You know and they know that the Republicans would never agree to those terms"

Polling indicates that all of those provisions are popular with the public at large as well as Republican voters. Hell, when Trump ended DACA he specifically said he did it so that it would be enshrined in legislation. As for CHIP, I haven't seen anyone come out against the program, and continuing it will save about 6 billion dollars.

Well, the Republicans would most likely not agree because just reinstating DACA is not the solution.

And that I agree with 100%, Sure there need to be figured out a way for those illegals to have an option of staying, but it should not be done by providing them with an easy pass.

Also, is it worth affecting millions of legal Americans, just to save a few illegals who have shown no interest in respecting American values?

Polling shows most Americans agree that there should be a way for the illegals to apply for legal status. Not that it should be done by DACA.

Also, you know no republican will sign a deal where it looks like the Democrats got the upper hand and they come out on top. So the right thing to do is for both sides to stop being shitheads and compromise and think of the people affected by a shutdown.

If that would help, that would be the answer.

But we all know how Democrats are, and they already last year. Said they would rather have a shutdown, than not come out on top and make the Republicans pay.

Why judge presidents by what they say before they win the election? It seems darn silly as you will be universally disappointed. They lie incessantly to get the job.

Seems far more efficient to simply judge them by what you think is correct.

Still some acknowledgement about what they meant before and how, perhaps, misguided they were about the issue back then.

@kittennose: At least you don’t try to hide the fact about how much they lie.

Still some acknowledgement about what they meant before and how, perhaps, misguided they were about the issue back then.

I am pretty sure I am the desiccated* captain of team cleanse all politicians so far as this board is concerned. If you would like to come to tryouts were are always looking for recruits, and we give out free fire.

The last bit though... We are a nation in which the party that claims to be anti-bigotry has decades of proud bigotry behind it. The fiscally conservative party has never paid a cent on our debt, and loves acquiring more. The pro-poor people party doesn't care about the poorest parts of America. The pro-religion party is actively engaging in religious discrimination. The Anti-religion party is actually attacking that religious discrimination as racism.

Getting politicians to concede that their empty minded trash talk is intellectually dishonest and opportunist seems absurdly optimistic. I mean heck, it is considered rude to point out that they consider accused rapists good people and staunch political allies.

*(That was auto corrected from designated, but I like it better so I am not changing it.)
