The Hill

A majority of Republicans say President Trump is a better leader than former President Abraham Lincoln, according to this week’s Economist/YouGov weekly tracking poll.

Fifty-three percent of Republicans said Trump was a better president when compared to Lincoln, while 47 percent chose the Civil War-era leader.

Lincoln still overwhelmingly beats Trump among all Americans, 75 percent to 25 percent, with the vast majority of Democrats and Independents choosing the former president.

While impeachment and other controversies surrounding Trump continue to dominate headlines, polls have shown the president maintaining a strong approval rating among Republicans.

The Economist/YouGov poll found that 87 percent of those in the GOP either somewhat or strongly approve of the job he’s doing as president.

Trump in the past has boasted of his approval rating within the party, comparing it to Lincoln.

“You know, a poll just came out that I am the most popular person in the history of the Republican Party,” Trump said in a July interview with The Sun newspaper in the U.K.

“Beating Lincoln,” Trump added, without clarifying to which poll he was referring. “I beat our Honest Abe.”

The Economist/YouGov weekly tracking poll surveyed 1,500 Americans from Nov. 24-26 and has a margin of error of 2.8 percent.

Dear god! XD

Well, yeah, it's natural that modern Republicans don't like Lincoln; keep in mind that Republicans and Democrats switched platforms during the civil rights movement, although Lincoln was a Republican, during his time the Republicans were the "radical" liberals.

You will soon also start seeing Republican opinion of Nixon to become more and more positive as the hearings continue.

Well that's just their opinion, but god damn that is really disheartening nonetheless.

This is what happens when you put party before country.

I don't doubt that one bit.

And you are correct about the stances changing; if anyone ever uses the argument "Well my party was for this 10+ years ago" you should ignore it because 20 years ago their party was for something else, 30 years ago something else, and 100 years ago you wouldn't even think it the same party.

That's really what it comes down to, isn't it?

Obviously there is liberal bias on a lot of networks, but the conservative/right wing outlets really take it to a whole new level with legit propaganda.

But they keep insisting that the current GOP is the party of Lincoln.

Fox News keeps telling them how great Trump is. I'm sure it's hard not to feel that way when their daily propaganda keeps reinforcing that idea.

This is somewhat true, but not entirely. The Republican party has always been the party of big business, and back in the day big business was actually very anti-slavery. They admired Lincoln, both during his presidency and after, because they saw him as a reformer of a broken system and as someone who was going to protect their interests as well. This strain of Republicanism carried through the days of Teddy Roosevelt and even into the sixties through Rockefeller Republicans. Even more modern, more extreme Republicans have taken to calling themselves the party of Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt up through the Bush Administration. That they should all just switch from admiring someone like Lincoln to worshiping Trump, or at least saving their criticism of him for when they're behind closed doors, is alarming. But then again, they always were plenty of Republicans who claimed to admire Lincoln just to distract from their own racism. I think it's just jarring to see how many people fall into that category rather than genuine admirers of Lincoln.

That makes sense, didn't their ancestors fight against Lincoln?

Also modern Republicans don't seem to share many of Lincoln's values, the parties have changed quite a bit.

So some site writes some article citing some poll not a lot of people even took and it's breaking news for you? Must be a slow weekend.

1. Several sites reported on this.

2. The Economist/YouGov is a well respected pollster.

3. 1500 is a regular sample size.

4. He never said it was breaking news. It's a regular thread.

You seem extremely triggered by this news, hence the deflection.

And nobody seems to care, but you. Can you think of a more trivial, or pointless thing to concern yourself with than what 53% of 1500 people think? There are real problems in the world, this isn't one, it's just an attempt to find an excuse to whine about Trump supporters.

Next up, 51% of 1500 people think Trumps skin doesn't look THAT orange. That's end of the world stuff right there.

One has to wonder.

What exactly are they basing this on? I find the support for Trump doesn't stem much from his accomplishments rather than his personality cult. The Right love him because he's not shy of demonstrating extreme hate towards what they feel. He hates democrats and liberals unabashedly, and so they adore him for it.

But in terms of what has been achieved? God help us if a civil war erupted under Trump's watch, that would be the end of the Union as we know it within a matter of months. Not only would he not try to retain it, he'd actively work to further fracture its divide. Trump loves pitting people against one another, he loves being an agent of chaos and division, and that's largely why his base worships him.

In terms of Lincoln though? It's like comparing a preschooler with Newton. As I've said before, Trump doesn't amount to so much as a peanut in Lincoln's shit.

Yeah, it is a ridiculous internet poll which only further highlights the fact it's being used as an attempt to troll and stir shit. You can literally find an internet poll that suggests 51% of any given group of people support a ban on water. Telling people to calm down who are clearly, already calm is just another attempt to try to get under their skin. And it has failed. It's just too bad the clearly written rules on trolling on this forum is unequally applied.
