@jeezers: Unfortunately Tulsi started whining about muh Kurds when we pulled out of Syria, like every other Democrat. That's when she lost me.
Okay, the Syria pullout was shitshow. Trump gave no warning to anyone, left the Kurds high and dry, Turkey invaded the area, and then Pence and Pompeo had to rush in and try to contain the situation.
Tulsi wants us to end foreign entanglements, but you know, in an organized well planned manner.
It's our fault that another country decided to invade? That sounds like some BS to me. It really irks me when people demand the US "protect its allies" while simultaneously lamenting our constant interventions.
Obama had an organized plan to get us out of Iraq. It took 3 years (he promised 16 months). Then he had a plan to "protect our allies", so we went back for another six years, and didn't leave until a month ago 300,000 iraqis poured into the streets telling us to GTFO. Let's just stop.
Keep in mind, we went back to Iraq because of the Islamic State, which was able to come about due to the chaos in Syria at the time. I agree that Iraq seems to be in a better place right now and we should start gearing up to pull out. What I don't think we should do, is make it a surprise announcement like this is a reality TV show about to go on a commercial break.
As for Turkey, yeah, they were not keeping it secret that they wanted to create a buffer zone in Syria. There should have been some kind of agreement negotiated about that before we pulled out. Instead, Turkey took a bunch of land from the Kurds, and Pompeo came rushing in to negotiate, only to just kind of give approval of the land grab. The Kurds did the majority of the work fighting IS, and their reward was loosing territory to Turkey. We'll see how ready they are to work with us the next time some Jihadist group runs amok.
And it's not like we had a bunch of soldiers in harms way here. There were about 2000 troops playing an advisory role in the region. Trump hadn't made any progress bringing any troops home, so he picked a spot he thought was low hanging fruit. But because he didn't take a moment to really analyse the situation, the whole tree branch came off with the fruit and hit him in the face.
