She's been battling an array of health issues for a long time now. I hope her family is at peace and my prayers go with them. Regardless of the many differences of decisions made by her, she is probably one of the revered Supreme Court justices of all time. It's tragic that her death will be a political football in a very divisive time.

We are totally screwed. She will be missed, but now Trump will force another one in and use that to steal this election.

Guaranteed Trump will try to appoint a new one prior to leaving office, even if he loses. Hes appointed many conservative judges and this will last a long time.

With all the health complications shes had the last few years i think we all knew it was comming, didnt agree with her all the time politically, regardless R.I.P

Anyone else think its kind of ridiculous justices stay in thier position untill they are literally on thier death bed, I find this sad, term limits?

@Master_Live: Collins always talks a good game when her vote isn't necessary. If her vote is needed, she'll vote yes.

Fortunately, Republican leadership was crystal clear that nominating a Supreme Court justice in an election year is unethical, so it doesn't matter.

That's not what dems were saying a few years ago. They gave Republicans shit for not ramming through Garland. Maybe Republicans should do what they wanted them to do before and ram someone through before the election?

@eoten: You mean nearly a year before the election that Republicans blocked because "voters need their say" a year out? I'm no mathematician, but I'm pretty sure a month and a half out is less time than a year out, so square that away with the party's prior stance.

oh any notion that he is going to honor his own words went out the window a few months after he said it.

Politically it might be beneficial for McConnell to leave the vacancy open, it would galvanize Republicans just like it did in 2016.

Plus many Republican senators are in trouble, taking a vote like this right now might seal some senate races.

The nominee will receive a vote, but will he whip for it? Murkowski already said she is a no and I can predict that Romney might be a no. Previously Graham and Grasley said no to confirming a judge this late in the year.

We will see.

A simple question. If dems controlled the presidency and the senate, would they nominate and confirm someone before January? Or would they let the next Senate do it?

She was a strong woman, and it's sad that she passed. At 87 and her history of cancer, we knew that it was coming eventually, but I know that it still makes people upset regardless.

I personally think that they should wait until 2021 but I know that they are going to do whatever they feel is more politically advantageous.

But at the same time, if we take Senator Schumer's words literally, is he saying that if Trump wins reelection we should keep her seat vacant until 2025?

I hope he nominates Amy Barret, would be good for 2A and 4A rights. Dems can't try to pull a kavanaugh against her either.

The party in power is going to do whatever they believe is the politically advantageous thing to do, especially if they are not sure they will still be in power in a few months.

There's a pretty good chance Democrats would have fought harder to get Merrick Garland confirmed if they didn't believe Hillary Clinton had the election in the bag.

Mitch Mcconnel and Trump already jumping at the bit before her corpse has even had time to cool. Not even a day or week to mourn. I honestly don’t know how these scum live with themselves, much less those who support them. Save your fucking crocodile tears, Trumpsters.

Chuck Schumer's tweet demanding that the next president picks RBG's replacement (we know he means Biden since the next president wouldn't take office until 2025 if Trump wins assuming he completes his second term) came eight minutes before his tweet expressing his condolences for her death.

While I disagree with the people on the right trying to make this political before her body is cold, let's not pretend even for a second that it is only the right making this political right now.

Also look at the fact that as of this post (9:50 PM EST), Senator Schumer's tweet demanding that the next president picks her replacement has almost 90,000 likes while his condolence tweet only has 12,000.

My guess is that it most likely has something to do with most people's lives being more affected by a Supreme Court Justice than condolences to someone they don't personally know.

This should not even be spoken of until a designated period of mourning has concluded. This is why I hate politics, it brings out the absolute worst in people, the abdication of decency, integrity and dignity in the vying for power. Have they no shame?
