The Trump administration plans to offer billions in aid to farmers hit by tariffs on their goods, a move that could ease the pain caused by Trump's escalating trade war in key electoral states, according to multiple reports Tuesday.

https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2018/07/24/trump-plans-to-give-billions-in-aid-to-farmers-hurt-by-tariffs-report.html

They're projected to be announced this afternoon. It's an interesting gambit given that it simultaneously acknowledges his constituency has been harmed by the tariffs and that taxpayer funds will be used to partially mend the self inflicted wound.

The fact that the Senate really hasnt moved strong on putting the legality of some of his tariffs into question as of late makes me wonder if they (and congress) knows something big it about to happen on the Russian investigation(s) and trials. and as such they know that would take up most of the time.

I dont know, purely guessing on my part. The thing is I would think they would think they could legally ask(demand) the president explain how we Canada for example is a National Security risk.

vote for me, i'll **** up your pay by imposing tariffs on other countries without thinking through the possible consequences, then if it hurts you financially, i'll redistribute wealth from other people back to you. or I'll borrow money FROM china to pay for it.

this is sheer comedy level incompetence at this point.

exactly!

ignore a homeless mans request for money (I am guilty of doing that) while at lunch then come back to work at AIG and explain how AIG specifically can not fail and must be bailed out despite crimes

that is in general how american system works

not to nitpick but the AIG bailout was really a bailout of banks through AIG.

AIG was basically gutted and the banks were made more or less whole.

never forget where the real power lies :)

Hey, welfare is fine as long as it's corporate welfare.

Yup, makes the economy turn. While its needed (take solar and battery power cars for example) its a shame there isn't a real balance that also helps those in major need.

Should be something like, want hand outs from the government, fine, bring in a certain amount of qualified people, train them (government pay that salary), then hire them (at a market wage), and receive your corporate welfare. (Obviously this is just the high level view of the idea)

$12 billion to start with. Wonder how much they’d save by just backing off of the tariffs entirely.

Why don't these farmers just pull themselves up by their bootstraps and work harder?

agreed.

or at min. it must come with a written explanation as to why its a matter of national security and Senate can vote against the measure thus reversing the tariff which might be in place while the vote happens.

if that makes sense. that way if it really is a matter of national security the ball can be in play and then the senate can reverse the order if they vote

Bailing out people simply because of HIS policies. He is the sole owner of this. What happens when the rest come clamoring for their share because of his idiotic economic policies?

The simple act of bailing them out is a tacit admission that his policies are negatively affecting us, and his own constituents at that.

So Trump fails once again and the tax payers have to pay for his idiocy. Just like a certian wall proven ineffective and Mexico never paid for like they said.

@theone86: It's also the party of Constitutionalism. The Commerce Clause clearly puts the regs on foreign trade in the hands of congress.

Maybe you don't see the problem with foreign corporations having such easy access to our government by "fast-tracking" stuff like TPP and TTIP, but I think it's been killing the democratic nature of free trade for decades.

By the way, isn't this technically welfare? I thought republicans hated that word to death, equal to satan, which is ironic because a lot of the states that voted for Trump are bathing in welfare.

Okay, first off, what do trade agreements have to do with foreign countries accessing our government? And what does TPP have to do with sanctions, other than providing a more effective vehicle for addressing trade disputes? More detraction from someone who doesn't want to address the issue at hand.

The issue at hand is that, if you disagree with a specific behavior that is technically allowed, then why are you defending someone who exhibits said behavior? If Republicans dislike executive prerogative of sanctions then they should be opposed to Trump passing sanctions whether it's technically allowed or not. That's like personal responsibility 101, and not doing so when the same party has been belly-aching about personal responsibility is the pinnacle of hypocrisy.

Prime example why the President shouldn't have this executive power, meaning I think this is the most egregious abuse of power on the subject. Apparently, for those affected with TDS, this isn't proper criticism because I didn't personally insult the President, so let me try again

President Trump is a big dumb orange meanie for using unconstitutional legislation.

Better?

Also, the constitutional argument is going right over your head. It doesn't matter if someone "more responsible" was in power, fast-tracking is unconstitutional. I don't care if it's being done to promote or deter foreign trade. It violates the Commerce Clause and shouldn't be done under any circumstance.

They're projected to be announced this afternoon. It's an interesting gambit given that it simultaneously acknowledges his constituency has been harmed by the tariffs and that taxpayer funds will be used to partially mend the self inflicted wound.

So the problem? Besides the obvious political game.Obama did the same in 2014 and the taxpayers are already giving around 20+ billion to farmers.

@Jacanuk: It clearly explains the problem in the post you quoted, acknowledging that economic damage was done by his policies.

And? I am not denying that a Trade war has its cost.

But that does not mean there is a problem, in fact, I am more surprised by Trump that he actually considered the cost and have decided to help out the people hit by the trade war.

If he doesn't help out the people hurt by the trade war then he has no base. If this was any other demographic than his base he would not help them out.

No it's not a claim. He only plays to his base. Therefore, it's fact.

Considering the Wisconsin dairy farmers I've talked to, and their displeasure for the POTUS after this whole tariff war he started with Canada, he's lost the entire state during the next election.
