Oof, what a scumbag.

https://www.npr.org/2018/09/13/647377915/trump-denies-death-toll-in-puerto-rico-falsely-claims-done-by-the-democrats

A study conducted by The Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University determined the death toll to be 2,975, a figure accepted by Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló, and far beyond the previous official count of 64.

FEMA Administrator Brock Long wrote in a letter to Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts that there were 2,431 applications for funeral assistance from Puerto Rico as of July 30. Just 75 have been approved by the Trump administration so far because of eligibility questions.

The president's tweets came as the government prepares for Hurricane Florence's impact on the Carolinas and set off a storm of criticism on Twitter. Chef José Andrés, whose charity fed thousands on the island in the aftermath of the storm, said Trump is "the face of no shame."

Doubt.

There were a bunch of people that died within a week because of hospitals being flooded.

What you mean doubt?

The George Washington University study states that there were, approximately, 2,975 more deaths than would be expected for the same period if no hurricane had occurred.

If a personal dies because he/she couldn't get care because the hospital was flooded because of the rain brought by the hurricane that would seem to support the study's conclusions.

No hurricane, no flood. No flood, less death. There was more deaths because the hurricane came and devastated the area.

So again, what do you mean about "doubt"?

Not that I think Trump is remotely correct, it is odd that it took almost a full year for the U.S. government who reported the death toll at 64 to go to 3000. Every disaster has deaths afterwards. What's the official count of the world trade center attack at? I'm sure many people died later or will die because of asbestos and other complications directly tied to the towers falling. Here's another article that says the death toll in Puerto Rico was 4600.

That's a Harvard study that estimated the excess deaths in 4645 (there have been at least a handful of studies trying to estimate the number of excess deaths).

The George Washington University (GWU) study is taken as the official number because it was commissioned at the behest of the government of Puerto Rico in a partnership between the George Washington University and the University of Puerto Rico (UPR). The GWU study is seen as the most reliable because the study had full access to death certificates and other crucial data that the others studies didn't have available. It is also taken as the official number because, well, the government of PR officially accepted the findings of the GWU/UPR as their own.

So it wasn't that it took the US government a full year to go from 64 to 2,975. It is that it took a year for the hurricane to pass, pressure to study and get to the real of deaths due to hurricane Maria to build up, to commission the study, the study to get done and the government accepting the results of the study.

The US government is now reflecting the 2,975 figure because the Puerto Rican government reflected it first.

@Master_Live: Does this happen with every hurricane/earthquake/tsunami etc etc? I lived in FL most of my life and never heard of death tolls changing a year later. I know Puerto Rico was a mess though, so maybe that's why it took so long. Just seems like that's a huge jump from 64.

Yes. If the infrastructure isn't repaired in a timely manner more deaths are attributed to those facts which were caused by the hurricane etc. It's not rare. What is rare is how little help Puerto Rico was given.

Reality is a broad term in this debate.

The number is based on an estimated guess from what is reputable sources.

Not saying that the number is not correct, just pointing out the facts here.

Trump creates conspiracies out of no where on a daily basis. The man is a serial liar in every aspect of his life. I HOPE he's dumb enough to interview with Mueller, since it's obvious that the little worm would most likely perjure himself.

This is just another low for an incompetent administration.

I figured that those with money had already evacuated and it's those on the borderline and underneath the poverty line that still remains in the worst areas.

Agreed. This is like looking at the sky and saying it's purple though.

Puerto Rico was handled so damn poorly. This is just throwing salt on a gaping wound.

I'm telling you to stay on point. This thread is about the lies trump is telling. You are steeped in identity politics. I've not praised nor excused any president. You trumpettes sure do and he's the worst thing to happen to this country. It's disgusting how anyone approves of him. For the first time I'm embarrassed to be American.

There is no real accurate number of the deaths in Puerto Rico. Up until August 31 2019 the official death toll was 64.
