NEW YORK – President Donald Trump’s opening remarks at the United Nations Tuesday created an awkward and unexpected moment, with other world leaders laughing or grumbling at the American president’s boast about his administration’s accomplishments.

Trump began his speech by saying his administration “has accomplished more than almost any administration in the history of our country,” an assessment not shared by some of the 130 world leaders gathered in the chamber.

"So true," Trump said as he looked out at the crowd of UN diplomats. "I didn’t expect that reaction but that’s okay.”

The Trump remarks and crowd reaction drew pointed commentary on Twitter, with some ridiculing Trump’s assertion.

This is exactly what the world thinks of the United States right now. A clown of a country.

Has that ever happened before? I know W Bush said a lot of incredibly stupid things, but I imagine people respected him enough to not openly laugh at his face about it (plus Bush could at least see the humour in it all). Only Trump's most stubborn defenders respect him, so...yeah, the US lost a lot of face today.

It's not just that he's saying stupid shit, it's that he's being a shameless self-promoter in a way no other president before him has. Even of his statement were true, it was literally the first line of his speech. Starting your speech off by basically saying "I'm the greatest president ever" is one of the most vainglorious things he could possibly do. Most speech givers start off by giving an amusing anecdote or an attention-grabbing factoid, then give an overview of the issues they want to address, then offer solutions, and usually only at the end tout their accomplishments, and even then it's usually as a way to advocate for keeping momentum going rather than to make themselves look better. Trump, though, just barrels in with "I'm the greatest, everybody give me praise now!" It's insane, there's no other way to describe it.

The leaders of the most powerful countries in the UN are all less popular then Trump and have polar opposite beliefs. So why try to be more like them? UN doesn't hate Trump. Trump made himself look like a fool and doesn't understand the concepts of tariffs, trade, international law and so on. The international community sees him as a fool and rightfully so.
