What if we just shrink doctors to the size of bacteria so they can enter the body and fight the virus directly?

@warmblur: I feel the same about people who think Trump actually suggested people consume or inject anything. But we all know most people didn’t watch the video in context and follow whatever their favourite fake news provider tells them what to think.

This. There's really no defending the fact that Trump was toying with the idea of injecting UV rays or whatever he said, but leave it to the #notmypresident people to do their best to blow it out of proportion.

To anyone viewing this live (which already makes me think you're probably insane) this is a "nothingburger".

Love the pitiful defense of the usuals here. The world they live in relies on the non-existence of implicit messaging and passive narratives. Trump said these things out loud. He doesn't need to explicitly tell people, 'Go do this', for it to be stupid and dangerous.

'If they didn't state it word for word they didn't mean it!'

This is the tactic of defense against the worst of Trump's inclinations.

Unless he comes out and says, "I, Donald J. Tump, hereby swear before this notary and upon my signature that I am an avowed racist", they refuse to connect the dots and utilize things such as evidence, inference and deduction. You can shove dots drawing out a picture into their face and they are utterly blind, only "provable" wrong in declaration of explicitness. Which, if it ever came, they'd then probably act like they've always been open to the prospect at all times.

They elected him president after a year of him leading the birtherism conspiracy theory. This level of stupidity isn't new.

It isn't new, but it is tiring.

Now we see Trump saying it was 'sarcastic'. Doesn't seem like 'fake' news when he's back peddling now. He can't even get the narrative right with his brain dead supporters.

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you very much. So I asked Bill a question that probably some of you are thinking of, if you’re totally into that world, which I find to be very interesting. So, supposing we hit the body with a tremendous — whether it’s ultraviolet or just very powerful light — and I think you said that that hasn’t been checked, but you’re going to test it. And then I said, supposing you brought the light inside the body, which you can do either through the skin or in some other way, and I think you said you’re going to test that too. It sounds interesting.

ACTING UNDER SECRETARY BRYAN: We’ll get to the right folks who could.

THE PRESIDENT: Right. And then I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in a minute. One minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning. Because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs. So it would be interesting to check that. So, that, you’re going to have to use medical doctors with. But it sounds — it sounds interesting to me.

So we’ll see. But the whole concept of the light, the way it kills it in one minute, that’s — that’s pretty powerful.

Spin it how you want, Trump want's to or thinks it is possible to bring "bright lights" and "disinfectants" inside your body.

And that's not out of context. The paragraph before was him talking about how bleach and isopropyl work on physical surfaces so, naturally, in Trump's mind the logical thing to do is try it out on people's insides.

I watched the whole thing earlier today, and I just now read the transcript.

Sorry man I just don't see it. I've been working really hard to give people the benefit of the doubt lately, and I just can't find a reason to give it to Trump in this scenario.

How can sarcasm seriously be the defense? 50,000 Americans are dead and counting. Do you really want the defense to be "it's just a prank bro"? If anything that's worse.

People don't get Trump had an uncle that was a genius and this gives him knowledge the likes of which nobody has seen before.

Or maybe his senility is getting out of hand.

Now he claims it's sarcasm? The worst thing about Trump is he doubles down worse than his supporters do. And why would you claim it's sarcasm? Is that really the right attitude to have right now during a pandemic? He clearly doesn't know what he's doing or saying at this point. This is why we have to rely on the governors at this point to do the right thing and people keep trying to subvert that into a disaster.

Oh, so he's winging it, so that's why he backtracked his statement as sarcasm? You were saying we took his statements wrong earlier. And why is he "winging" it? He's not a god damn medical expert. And he keeps combating them when he really just needs to sit back and shut up for a change, because when he combats his experts, his followers hate them too.

The cult of personality he has is crippling. They listen to him instead of doctors because his base are the kind of people that have been fighting authority their whole lives (but will ironically listen to everything Trump says) and they're willing to go to their graves over it. THIS is why makers of cleaning products have to put warnings out to the public to keep stupid people from injecting them because they know how much influence he has.

Donald Trump is not a thinker, he's out of his field here. He's only thinking about getting re-elected and energizing his base. American lives come a painful second to this. Spare me the fuckery of the mental gymnastics.

Read like an onion article, then realized the President was giving thought to this. He can blame it on "sarcasm" ... Okay, not really something to poke fun at when there's 50k deaths from the Rona. Either way, extremely dumb by any standard.

1. That site did put it under context. The source may be questionable, but nothing in that article was. Let us not commit genetic fallacies. We are better than that. (Not talking to you on this one but I meant more in general for everyone).

2. Trump is stupid, really stupid. But I doubt even he would do something THAT stupid.

3. Trump really cares about his perception. Him getting people killed, his base nonetheless would seriously hurt his image.

I heard him ask say it. He did say injections with cleaners that kill virus' in one minute might be worth checking into.

https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/lysol-maker-please-dont-ingest-or-inject-our-product-to-treat-coronavirus/2388212/

As for his link...…….first thing was a pop up about a mug for liberal tears so they do not have credibility.

Edit: If you didn't see the longer version he was looking at the doctor with his recommendations.

I didnt see the longer version, so I am most likely missing context.

You are right though that musing it was really dumb of trump. There are a lot of stupid people out there, who will believe anything the president says. And desperate people are far more likely to take ANY action, no matter how stupid it is (this is how alternative medicine thrives) If any person dies over this, Trump should be charged for manslaughter.

That said, we also shouldnt commit genetic fallacies. It is annoying when certain posters on this board deny ANY article from any left wing source such as CNN. We shouldn't do the same, show our intellectual superiority by acting in better faith.

And yes, there is a huge difference in credibility between CNN and what he linked but the principle stands.

@ratchetclank92 said:

Not sure what is more dumb, injecting disinfectant, or ingesting well known carries of disease (bats, mice, etc.)....

Injecting disinfectants is far more likely to kill or seriously harm you than eating animals with extremely strong immune systems.

Not to mention, due to the availability of food, eating rodents may be necessary for survival, such as in large swathes in africa, since a lot of the larger game is disappearing. Unfortunate but true.

@Sevenizz: I've only seen the clip of Trump walking up to the microphone, and then talking with the doctor.

He talks about how he heard light can kill the virus, applied outside or inside the body.

He then talls about how he heard disinfectant can knock out the virus in a minute, and speculates that this could be injected into the body, with a cautionary note that doctors would need to do the injecting.

Anyone listening to that might reasonably think that Trump believes injecting disinfectant would stop COVID-19. Alternately, they might reasonably think that Trump was rambling onstage, and had zero idea what we was talking about.

But...hey, I haven't seen the full press conference. Please explain your interpretation, and please also explain how his statements aren't dangerously negligent.

@BenjaminBanklin: He was winging it with doctors and the press core. Thinking out loud if you will. He didn’t tell anyone to do anything - just circling ideas. Have you ever been to a brainstorming session? Crazier ideas are bounced around.

Honestly, people are literally salivating for excuses to bash Trump at this point - and the masses just go with it without a thought as to what’s really being discussed.

Who’s the moron here? The one speaking with experts about a solution to a problem or simpletons not coming up with anything except to criticize the thinker?

Fair enough, but when you brainstorm it's usually behind closed doors with people that understand the context of your comments. Not in front of the entire world on television.

Even then, while I maintain that there are no bad ideas when brainstorming, that was still pretty dumb.

Imagine, there's people that while seeing Trump say that nonsense though to themselves "he's such a thinker, such a brilliant mind".

Yeah the people that defend him always surprise me.

My friend I think feels sorry for Trump or something. We were talking about something, I think some sort of COVID profiteering example, and my buddy was like "Yeah I think Trump went after that dude" like he was trying to say Trump is actually doing some good.

I let it slide and didn't confront him about it, but it just seemed really out of place.

This buddy of mine is a super nice dude, really smart, well educated, has a great job and all that stuff. I just do not understand why he likes Trump so much. I've asked him about it and it's the ol' "He's an outsider" spiel...but there has to be more to it.

How does Trump sucker these people? My friend identifies as a libertarian so that might be what it is. I don't know.

Of all the stupid things he has ever suggested, this is probably the worst. There's no excuse for something so brain dead. Thankfully, it looks like he might not do the briefings anymore. That won't stop him from saying something idiotic on Twitter, but baby steps.
