President Joe Biden is facing backlash for not visiting East Palestine, Ohio, after the toxic train derailment devastated the community. As health and safety concerns persist among residents, the White House insists they are on top of the situation.

Former President Donald Trump accused Biden of indifference speaking in East Palestine on Wednesday. “Unfortunately, as you know, in too many cases your goodness and perseverance were met with indifference and betrayal in some cases,” Trump said. “And Biden and FEMA said they would not send aid to East Palestine under any circumstance.”

The White House reported Biden held a phone call late last night with top elected officials from the area, including Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, Ohio Congressman Bill Johnson, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Michael Regan, head of the Environmental Protection Agency.

As Biden heads back to Washington from Poland, many will be wondering whether he will make a trip to East Palestine.

In the 19 days since the devastating train derailment caused major chemical spills in Ohio, Biden has visited four states on White House duties and two more for personal travel. He also made a surprise appearance in Ukraine before his planned visit to Poland.

This comes in contrast to Trump, who called Biden’s absence from East Palestine “terrible.”

White House spokesperson responded to Trump’s visit, saying, “Congressional Republicans and former Trump administration officials owe East Palestine an apology for selling them out to rail industry lobbyists, when they dismantled the Obama-Biden rail safety protections as well as EPA powers to rapidly contain spills.”

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has also faced scrutiny for not being on the ground at East Palestine, but is scheduled to visit Thursday.

“As the secretary said, he would go when it’s appropriate and wouldn’t detract from the emergency response efforts. The secretary is going now that the EPA has said it’s moving out of the emergency response phase and transitioning to the long-term remediation phase,” said a Department of Transportation spokesperson Wednesday.

Republican Congressman Bill Johnson, representing the area, said about Buttigieg’s visit, “It is way late in the game.”

Bad look for Biden in my opinion.

You go to Ukraine to give 500 million to Ukraine but it's pulling teeth just to get FEMA to help people in Ohio.

People can call Trump's visit to East Palestine a photo opt. But I felt this was shameful of Biden to go to Ukraine while ignoring Americans.

After Trump announced he was going there apparently Pete buttegege came out and said he would come too once the time was right lmao......

*yawn* Ask the Governor. Biden called him right away and asked if he needed help. He said he did not. This spin is pathetic.

Good. Maybe Trump will learn that his actions have consequences. They should really thank him for the disaster.

The governor of Ohio doesn’t think so.

The latest: DeWine said he requested assistance from the Department of Health and Human Services, the Health and Emergency Response Team and the CDC.

  • He said his administration has been in daily contact with FEMA about additional federal support.
  • "FEMA continues to advise that Ohio is not eligible for assistance at this time," DeWine said Thursday. "I will continue working with FEMA to determine what assistance can be provided."
  • Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) sent a letter to DeWine Thursday asking that the governor declare the derailment a disaster "to ensure the community has all the resources they need" and drive more federal funds to the area.

@sargentd: Oof, you're describing a terrible industrial disaster there.

Now seems like a bad time to talk about photo ops. It's more important to find out which moron deregulated the industry, and hold them accountable for it.

You agree, right?

Trump doesn't care, it's a PR stunt designed to erode support.

Biden does, he's not a sociopath looking to score points.

The argument itself is whataboutism, the go-to Russian propaganda tactic.

Trump, along with his followers, are actively trying to throw Ukraine under the bus with whatever methods they can.

And on their end, not really about ethics, it's about getting rid of Biden and winning. No matter how low they have to stoop.

White House defends response to toxic train derailment in Ohio (cnbc.com)

Within hours of the Norfolk Southern train derailment, the EPA deployed a team to East Palestine to support state and local emergency and environmental response efforts, the White House said. Officials from the Transportation Department also arrived to investigate what led to the derailment, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency has been coordinating with the state emergency operations center and other partners, the White House said.

President Joe Biden has offered federal assistance to Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, officials said.

That's exactly what it is. He isn't a public official and provided no real assistance. Also his policies were absolutely in the wrong direction to prevent stuff like this.

No it wasn't,

Biden promises more support, money to Ukraine during surprise visit | WZTV (fox17.com)

Biden said the U.S. is offering more weaponry, as part of about $500 million to the country. That comes in addition to the roughly $113 billion given last year, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. About three-fifths of that money has gone toward defense needs and the rest, for government aid, economic support and resettling refugees.

You guys blaming trump.. you realize this was an issue before him?

Obama caved to the railroad lobbyists in 2014. Caved due to pressure from the industry.

"In response, the Obama administration in 2014 proposed improving safety regulations for trains carrying petroleum and other hazardous materials. However, after industry pressure, the final measure ended up narrowly focused on the transport of crude oil and exempting trains carrying many other combustible materials, including the chemical involved in this weekend’s disaster."

I'm not here to point fingers at Obama or Trump for this derailment. But Biden and Pete's response to the disaster has been piss poor and that's saying it nicely.

Biden in a call to the governor asked to help and they told him not to bother so he went to Ukraine instead.

Trump, the architect of this disaster, visits the site he's chiefly responsible for with his scaling back of safety regulations he did for seemingly no other reason than to spite Obama.

He brought Trump branded bottled water.

The most truthful thing he ever said in years is when he stopped in a McDonald's and said he knew the menu better than anyone there.

I have no sympathy for these people.

Very bad listen, Bald Pool still being a loon. This is such a reach to find something Biden or Pete did wrong lol. When the actual blame is likely more associated with Republicans.

Biden and Pete not going there or arriving late is irrelevant. Are they doing everything they can to fix it? Did they offer aid? Did their policies cause the problems?

Fake nonsense.

The incident has prompted the Department of Transportation to consider new safety regulations, said Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Thursday during a visit to East Palestine.

The spacing of hot-box detectors and the temperatures at which they trigger alarms are not currently regulated by federal law, officials say.

Hang on, is any of that true?

Obama responded to the huge amount of train car oil spills by introducing new safety laws on trains carrying crude oil (the same laws Trump later revoked, using faulty calculations, which they later admitted were a mistake).

Your source is hinting that Obama initially proposed going beyond petroleum or crude oil, but then didn't, so this is somehow Obama's fault.

Looking through news articles from 2014/2015 though, I can't find anyone criticising Obama for not including chemical spills. Environmental groups were annoyed Obama didn't do it faster. Independent groups wanted more transparency on oil transportation. Nobody seemed to be demanding anything that would have helped this particular disaster.

So I seriously question your source. They seem to be trying to reconstruct history to blame Obama - which is ridiculous, since between Obama and Trump, the former obviously did the most to improve rail safety.

Also...if you're saying Obama bowed to industry pressure by weakening the safety regulations, then do you think Trump grovelled before the industry by removing exactly the same regulations?

Here's a fun thought experiment. Lets compare Trump's list of international visits against declared disasters within the United States. Let's see how the jimmies conveniently aren't rustled when we compare things like, as one example, Trump never visiting anyone during the recovery from the 2017 Tubbs Fire that killed 22 and caused billions in damage, and instead flying for an international visit to Japan in the first week of that November to hang out with the prime minister for 3 days.

Gee it's almost like the most powerful person in the most globally influential military needs to consider other countries and their problems too and probably shouldn't be criticized for that act in and of itself, but rather the handling of the visits and severity of the issues. And they should allow divestment to various domestic organizations from time to time, especially in cases where the governor refuses assistance.

Just another shitpost.

See the big picture. Allies matter. Ukraine falls, Europe becomes dependent on Russia for food and gas.

Russia gains leverage over Europe.

Europe falls more in line with Russia than US

These things matter.

And that's besides the point; it was not a photo op, the president of the US doesn't travel to a country at literal war for a photo op. They travel there because there's important shit to do.

The only reason Pete and Biden are doing anything is because Trump said he was going to go to East Palestine, Ohio. The Us government wouldn't give any to American citizens but made sure the gave aid to Ukraine.

100% false propaganda. Biden called the governor immediately and the EPA and FEMA have been there.

Before or after FEMA said they could not help them as the were for natural disaster only. I believe you posted that in a pervious post in this thread.

Imagine how useful 500 million in aid to East Palestine Ohio could be right now.

I think the person that deregulated railroads should pay that. Now who was that.....

Regulation de-regulation can not over come the physics of mass and motion.

This is literal fake news.

The incident has prompted the Department of Transportation to consider new safety regulations, said Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Thursday during a visit to East Palestine.

The spacing of hot-box detectors and the temperatures at which they trigger alarms are not currently regulated by federal law, officials say.

You have no idea what you are talking about. You can not just slam on the breaks on a train, if you do the train will de-rail and train cars will go every where.

The article says Biden didn't visit Ohio to not distract emergency efforts.

Sarg, did you even read your article. This is pathetic.

He could have acknowledged the incident and gave support to the residents all that was heard was crickets from the government and most of the main stream media. Instead they focused on how can we blame Trump.
