Shocker!

  • President Donald Trump says Russia should be reinstated into the G-7 meetings of global economic powers.
  • The remarks will likely add to tensions with global allies, who have scoffed at Trump's move to put tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.
  • Russia was thrown out of the G-8 group of nations following its annexation of Crimea in 2014.

He's trolling everyone. He knows it'll make headline news and that it will start the whole "Oh Trump wants Russia, he must be colluding." He's a master at playing the media.

@perfect_blue:

Both US and Russia are large oil producers within the former G8 grouping. http://www.naturalgasintel.com/articles/113115-us-oil-production-to-surpass-saudi-arabia-rival-russia-this-year-says-iea

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_of_Seven

Significant number of countries in G7 are EU members e.g. France, Germany, Italy and United Kingdom (until Brexit).

Non-EU members are Japan, United States and Canada.

If G7's EU members are rolled into "EU", G7 is only "G4".

Both EU and Japan are oil resource poor.

---

Remember, before WW1, both US and Russia are allies. US inherited UK's foreign policy (e.g. pro-Suadi, anti-Russia) after WW2.

If Australia was a little larger, it's would match Canada. Australia's position on climate change is a little towards right wing.

PS; Australian's roof solar panels are up take is very good. https://www.smh.com.au/business/the-economy/too-much-of-a-good-thing-solar-power-surge-is-flooding-the-grid-20180606-p4zjs7.html

The rising number of solar rooftop installations is creating concerns that too much energy is flooding into the electricity grid, and could cause blackouts as the system struggles to control the excess power.

There's very little need for a climate tax when Australia's roof solar up take is nearly overloading the grid with excess power generation.

Actually, if you know a bit about history and Crimea, you would know that it´s no secret that a large part of the population wanted to be Russian and not part of Ukraine.

The reason why it was a part of Ukraine and not Russia, was because in the 50's they became a part of Ukraine USSR, before then for over 200 years it was a part of the Russian USSR.

@Jacanuk: Well I'm not disputing the history, and of course it's possible that a majority of the Crimean population probably were in favour of joining the Russian Federation.

Doesn't change the fact that Crimea was a part of the Ukrainian state, which Russia invaded and then forced a separation vote. That's precisely the reason why they were kicked out of the G8, and I don't expect anyone other than Trump is in a rush to welcome them back in.

Trump is right in this case, if you are going to have the big countries talk things over, you need the big players at the table. And yes, Crimea should be part of Russia to be honest, and the people agree. We aren't always the good guys, and CNN and MSNBC are getting ridiculous with their criticisms.

Where Trump is screwing up is driving a wedge between the U.S. and it's allies as far as tariffs, climate change, and other G7 issues. Let's hope the North Korea situation goes well.

That’s dumb. There are countries like India and Brazil who have bigger economies and are growing, unlike Russia, who deserve to be there before there’s any talk of Russia rejoining the G7.

You do realize that there are 6 other countries who agreed that Russia was in the wrong and agreed to kick it out, right? And funny how Republicans all of the sudden care about not alienating other countries. The rest of the developed world warns against invading Iraq? **** 'em, we don't need them! Have a well-regarded trade deal with our major trading partners? Let's rip it up, screw those jerks! The rest of the developed world warns us about backing out of treaties? We don't take orders from no one! Oh, but guys, we really have to do everything lord Putin asks, we don't want to upset U.S. allies. Let's not even pay attention to the fact that we do almost no trading with Russia, that they're struggling economically, that we don't have military relations with them to speak of, that they've been overly aggressive in displaying force towards us and our allies, that they are functionally a dictatorship with an abhorrent human rights record, or that we have very little to gain by befriending them. Seriously, what do we get out of this, where is our upside? There is none, we gain a slight bit of goodwill from an "ally" that is overtly attempting to curb our global influence, and lose goodwill from an international coalition of allies that has been operating well since the end of World War Two. It makes zero sense, except for the fact that our fickle and conceited president has an overwhelming amount of Russian-connected advisers in his ear.

Democratic vote in Crimea. lol now I've heard it all. Someone save this thread. Russian doesn't even have legit national elections let alone Crimea where they invaded and had armed guards at polling stations.

It just goes to show you how dumb and susceptible some people are to blatantly dishonest propaganda.

Putin also admitted that he's been talking to Trump regularly. Clearly, plotting to have Russia and US as allies which is troubling. The Russian Oligarch is one of the most corrupt government on Earth.

@theone86:

We have to live in this world with a Russia that has nukes, so anytime you can get them to sit down and discuss world matters it's a good thing, whether it's G7 or elsewhere.

I hope you are not implying I am Republican, I voted for Hilary Clinton in the election. But unlike CNN if Trump does or says something right in my mind I will give him due credit

I can see what Trump is attempting to do, he is trying to reset the table of America from inside out, just as our personal happiness comes inside out. So he's happy when tariffs are fair for both U.S. and other countries, he's happy when we are having stability in our relationships with nuclear capable countries like Russia, North Korea, and China (despite the tariffs). Honestly, what the hell are we doing considering bringing Ukraine into Nato? Do we not see that as a slap in the face to Russia?

There's a lot he's done that I don't agree with, don't get me wrong. I don't agree with him on climate change, supreme court, gun control, and building that stupid wall for instance. He also thinks he knows more than his advisors and is quick to help with pardons anyone who is nice to him. A classic narcissist.

Because he's on Trump's team. That's literally the only reason he's okay with it. Just like how he thinks Russia didn't interfere.

This is partisan politics at it's absolute worst.

@AFBrat77: What are you implying by mentioning nukes? That if Russia doesn't get its way with the G7 it's going to start World War Three? That all countries with nuclear weapons should have their demands acceded to? Or are you just blathering because you think mentioning it makes your position stronger?

Those tarriffs are not fair, and they're not going to turn out well for U.S. workers or our foreign partners. It's like playing a game of Russian roulette with a fully loaded gun, it's patently idiotic and Trump is only doing it to inflame his base and play to his brand. It's hugely laughable that you defend kowtowing to an autocratic regime on the basis of needing to keep our allies happy, and also fully support pissing off our major trade partners because reasons.

And yes, bringing the Ukraine into NATO is a slap in Russia's face, a well-deserved slap. The fact of the matter is that Russia is hugely aggressive with its military operations, uses said operations to threaten NATO on a regular basis, and captured territory from Ukraine in contravention of international law. If they don't want to be slapped in the face then they shouldn't go around provoking NATO and seizing territory from sovereign nations.
