Why are so many gamers attracted to alt-right and AnCap politics?

Hello everyone,,

Between loot boxes and pay-to-win, beta-testing as “paid early access” and forced grinding, executive interference and over promised features, “crunch time” and regular layoffs, it seems fairly obvious that the majority of issues in gaming are the end result of capitalism https://reversephonelookup.onl/https://curated.onl/nba-reddit/.

It should be a fairly trivial thing to demonstrate that capitalism isn’t doing them any favors, so does anyone have any insight as to why they are so openly hostile to socialism and exultant about capitalism?

It’s probably a combo of

1. An illusion/sampling bias. Gamers spend a lot of time online, so alt right gamers also spend a lot of time online and appear over represented on social media.

Remember when EA got voted the worst company in America the same year that Blackwater was fucking people up or during the BP oil spill? That’s gamers being oversampled in online communities.

2. A lot of “Gamers” (and nerd culture writ large) have traditionally been white males who are used to being coddled to, and now that companies are trying to reach out to other demographics (women, POC, etc) some of the infantile white boys feel like they’re being “attacked” and “discriminated against” and shit and that makes them easy to pick up by alt right era. Easy to segue into conspiracies about cultural Marxism and pointless, childish rants about the evil SJW’s

Direct wealth redistribution is a band-aid. Some Democrats seem to be trying to turn it into a whole ideology. My guess is that stuff like UBI is generating far more net resentment on the right than it is support on the left.

If either party was serious about doing something about economic and social inequality, they'd be focusing on issues closer to the middle ground, like adult education. The technology is already in place to provide quality vocational and higher education to every adult in the country, in their own home, for a fraction of the amount that's currently being spent nationally on pointless university degrees and associated tax breaks and subsidies. IMO That's the kind of thing socialism can do well: infrastructure; not magic money maths. Only problem is meaningful reform entails standing up to unions.

*edit* Oh yeah... gamers. I suppose they're just like everyone else really. I wouldn't believe everything you read.

This is probably the best answer.

The Vocal minority can seem like much more.

They can bitch and complain about socialism all they want, but I know for a fact they use public services such as schools, roads, police, and fire fighters.

100% Capitalism is just as bad as 100% Socialism. It's up to Society to have a good mix of both. To say otherwise is ignorant and uneducated mouth garbage.

I do have to agree with the oversampling theory for the most part, but the Alt Right did have a campaign to actively seek out gamers for a while.

Steeve Bannon ran a company that mined items in WoW, then sold them to players for real money. The online community complained to Blizzard and got the whole thing shut down. Bannon realized this was a group that could be mobilized into action in politics if he could just find a way to manipulate them. When the Annita vs Gamergate mess came along, he saw that as his opportunity. He had Milo Yannopolis give Gamergate positive coverage on Brietbart in order to reel these people in. And the rest is history.

But yeah, overall I'd say it's still a small but vocal group.

Why would you say it's me when all of my threads are heavily sourced/cited and typically fact based rather than subjective unlike this one? Also I don't have any alts, I decimate people on this 1 and only account.

Seems like a baseless attack onme.

@zaryia: It's true. You're threads and responses are thoroghly researched and well articulated. People may disagree with you, but should at least be able to admit that much.

Because a vocal % of gamers are losers thrown to the margins of society due to their lack of social skills. Add to this being the most spoiled generation (which is not their fault) and you have the perfect combination.

Just my two cents on the matter...

...but I don't believe "gamers" trend to the right at all. What you have is a good majority of the population are too busy to either give a shit or too busy to make their beliefs so well known on-line.

Then you have this small minority that doesn't have anything better to do, and because they don't have anything better to do, they sit around all day and think about how shitty their lives are.

Then they think "Why is my life shitty?" and instead of blaming themselves or simply trying to make their lives better, they decide to blame someone else. Immigrants. Jews. Socialism. "Libs".

So what you have is 80% of the population too busy to talk about their moderate beliefs, and 20% of the population essentially making 90% of the noise.

And if I've learned one thing in my three or so decades of existence, it's the whiny little bitches that get the attention. It's the sad truth. No one cares about the quiet, silent folks that live their lives. That doesn't sell headlines.

The internet means everyone has a voice, everyone is a comedian, everyone has an opinion and most of us just love to troll and be negative.

That’s the gods honest truth.

I legit don’t care about American politics or Canadian politics at all. I just love to anger tree huggers, vegetarians, hippies etc and they happen to swing to the left most of the time.

In real life, I am on welfare and depend on social programs. I just love to troll online and act like a REAL man right wing guy because I think it’s funny.

I love the reaction it gets. People get so angry at the mention of “Trump” and they have legit meltdowns. I see it all the time in Canada. It makes no sense to me so I purposely anger people for lulz.

Exposure to it. Gamers are typically introverts isolated from real world interactions relative to normal people and are always online. They are exposed to alt-right propaganda nearly 24/7.

Same reason racists typically have racist parents. Simple exposure to it.

The link between gamers and alt-right can be seen very easily, as a lot of gamers are usually rejected from many social groups due to their outward difficulties and niche interests, and the alt-right uses tactics to prey upon them to gain new members ("it's not you who is the problem, it is the [insert random group least likely to be gamers, aka girls/poor people/etc] that are the problem instead.").

However, I'm not sure how that would necessarily link them to anti-consumer business practices. I suppose if the alt-right pitches the game websites/reporters as "anti-gamer", then when the game website reports on anti-consumer practices, the gamer will go defend them? That would make sense actually.

I think it’s the other way around. Look at NeoGaf/ResetEra. You cant go too much further left than that. 99% of the users here are anti capitalism, entitled little twerps. (Maybe that’s a slight exaggeration) Any “alt-right” users come off as trolls looking for attention.

Just a slight exaggeration. It's honestly not that bad, especially compared to when Trump was elected. I mean...they had to make Political Gamers for christ sake. So many meltdowns.

It is interesting though that whenever anything political is brought up in System Wars, a lot of the responses appear to be right-leaning.

Anyways this reads like a spam post, TC has 2 posts and he embedded a link.

especially nintendo gamers. They tend to be the really fanatical religious right type of people. We should shut that down immediately.
