As in, do you find yourself wishing that the retro game you’re currently playing had some features that newer games have, like achievements/trophies, better graphics, dynamic saves, downloadable content, etc?

I know at times when I’m playing a retro game, I would definitely like it if it auto saved after I made progress in the game, especially if it’s a game where save points are few and far between.

Trophies would be nice too. =)

How about you guys?

No, to be perfectly honest. I don't care about achievements or DLC, and I don't have much of an issue with saving in the games that I usually play. Maybe having autosaves would be better than writing down passwords, but that's all that I can think of. As for graphics, I kind of put myself in a different mindset than from when I play current gen games, so the thought of wishing for better graphics doesn't even register. Instead, I take into account the system that I'm playing on, comparing only the games of that particular library against each other.

Checkpoints and saves easily come to mind. We have had it really easy these past couple gens compared to the earlier ones.

I don't care about the features new games have when playing retro games, for many years I played video games not on a console but at an Arcade and there were no autosaves or things like that, you had 3 lives for your quarter and that was it until you reached the score that gave you another life.

Generally no; graphics wise, it depends.

One of my favorite games "Quake" has a ton of graphics mods with varying extents, while it objectively looks better, it starts to loose the charm the higher up the chain you go.

With older rudimentary games, I think your brain fills in the disconnect.

@Allicrombie: Great topic. Yes Coolyfett does wish some of the old school games had the features of today. Especially when you playing catch up. Coolyfett has his own definition of old school. Trophies is one of Coolyfetts favorite features on PlayStation, he just loves hearing thos chimes at the end of a level or mission. Its like a gaming resume. What if you could get credit for every Album youve listened to or every movie you have watched or every book youve read. Achievements Trophies and now Points allow for ones gaming experience and history to be recorded. Coolyfett has played so many games since 8 bit Generation 3. But only now is he getting the credit. Autosaves are so convenient, when playing and oldie you had to manually save or remember a code. Sega Genesis had codes to save and the NES did as well. As far as graphics go. Galaga and MsPacman are still cleaner than many of the games on PS1 and PS2. Some games become a blurry mess over time. Pixels dont make the game in Coolyfetts opinion. Only recently has Coolyfett started playing catch up on Gen 5 games. Coolyfett missed most of Gen 5. The game that is actually remembered is Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Donkey Kong Country and Tekken. Only because friends had those games. Missed most of Gen 6 as well, but did own a PS2. Coolyfett wishes more Gen 4 games would come to PlayStation and Nintendo digital stores. Gen 4 was the good years! Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Eternal Champions, Sonic the hedgehog, Fatal Fury, Streets of Rage, NFL Football 94, NBA JAM, so many spend the night classics.

I'm usually ok with the traditional save scheme, but sometimes it's simply bad, and limited by the time. Same with controls - usually they are fine, but sometimes its glaringly obvious they simply didn't have the right interface for the game. A big thing is cloud saves. They are super nice when something awful happens to your device...

And patches. I know there's debate about whether they "allow devs to be lazy", but old games had bugs and flaws too and patches would have been pretty nice...

But DLC and trophies and such have no real value for me. Indeed, DLC is a devolution of the once-great idea of expansion packs

I would say no to online gaming cause going to your friends house was a nice thing to get out the house and nothing beats going outside. Playing Rare Replay is a good example, playing all these retro games in one disc is spoiled.

There are certainly games that I wish had a save feature. And old RPGs I sometimes wish the menus, shops, etc were easier/quicker to navigate.

A lot of the new features take away from the games, imo. Zero risk/reward, these days.

Not really. Retro games look and play just fine without any modern features. If anything, retro games can often look better on CRT displays than modern indie games do on HD displays.

But sometimes, for the harder games, I might play them on an emulator with a save-state feature. I think that's the only thing I might've been a little spoiled by.

2 things I miss when playing retro games:

1) saves(if a game has no saves), I tend to use emulators for games like these because I simply do not have the time to play through certain games in one sitting.

2) twin stick controls: playing old 3d platformers and shooters without those features is really rough in this day and age.

Depends on the game.

For something like an FPS, if anything, it's the Retro games that spoiled me. Remember when they had a multitude of weapons that have strategy to them, including secrets and multiple branches to their level design?

For more modern stuff (or close to it), I can't play 3D fighters without the full 3D control, nor can I play the classic Tomb Raider's with tank controls. Heck, I can't even play Civ I without the unit health bar system that's been in place since Civ II.

Only for the old 3D games like early PS1 titles and such mostly because in the early days, so many developers were still learning how to do 3D and many games had horrible controls and gameplay mechanics. However the retro 2D games I love them just the way they are.

One thing I do miss in modern games that older games spoiled me on was the diversity of things they used to try back in the day. Like the Clock Tower or Jetmoto. I also miss GameGenie and Pro action replay which always got me to replay old games again just to do funky cheats like fly through the air or move super fast...etc. I always enjoyed doing things you can't normally do in games.
