What are the essentials?
I'm not the best person to speak up, as I typically just buy games I'd like to play and am not well tuned-in on their collector value. But I think a few Genesis-specific gems I really value are Castlevania Bloodlines - the unique entry for the series on Genesis, and a very good game. Shadowrun - a crazy detailed take on the game, it's special because it is huge, deep, and captures a lot of the spirit of Shadowrun (closer, many argue, than any other Shadowrun video game). Landstalker - this is probably the least stand-out of my list, but I think it's special as a large, colorful Zelda clone (a type of game that had very little presence on the Genesis)
I think essentials depend on taste, but these are the best games on the Genesis:
I might be missing a couple, but take a look and see what you like.
@Renegade_Fury: Is that a list of essentials or a list of every game on the system? lol
lol that is quite the list! A lot of those look familiar and I planned on getting. Some are new. @Renegade_Fury knows his sega though, so the input is greatly appreciated.
@n64dd: I started to look at the list thinking, 'oh great, I already have half of these'. It was when I got to 'Bill Walsh Football' that I had to lol. A lot of the games on the list are really good, some I scratch my head at.
Also, wth? No Sonic Spinball or Zombies Ate My Neighbors?

I think there are a little over 900 games on the Genesis, so no, not all of them, lol.

I created this list a while ago, but I think it covers what most agree to be the best on the system. I don't personally like every single one up there, but I think it's better for whoever is looking at it to pick and choose based on his or her own personal tastes.
You guys ever run across empty boxes or manuals out in the wild? I'm trying to keep an eye out to complete some of the cart only games I have(a large portion of which are Sega Genesis/32x games).
@suicidesn0wman: Bill Walsh is the G.O.A.T... but I'll let that comment slide. It's actually a good game though.
I think Zombies, I plain forgot, but I don't like Sonic Spinball, so I think I left that one off intentionally when I made this list, lol.
@Renegade_Fury: Oh I guess I'll let the Spinball comment slide then as well, only other pinball game I liked more was maybe Alien Crush on the TG16(because I don't own Devils Crush yet :( ).
@n64dd: Cheap? Or like ebay prices, where they want $35 for a box that got sat on and had soda spilled all over it?
@suicidesn0wman: Well I do like the cover art, and that it's based off The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and SATAM cartoon shows, so it's not all hate. :)
Dragon's Fury has to be my favorite pinball game on the Genesis, mainly because of the soundtrack. Technosoft always knew how to make badass music.
I must admit, my Genesis hasn't gotten any attention in years. I last played Shining Force CD and I don't think I even removed the disc, bought Sonic CD and placed it on the shelf with the others. My Sega Genesis probably cries itself to sleep at night cause no one touches it anymore.
@suicidesn0wman: The Genesis is my most played console of all time, but at least as far as SEGA consoles go, that was my Dreamcast until the Shenmue III kickstarter got me in the mood to plug it in again.
@Renegade_Fury: The Genesis was the only Sega console I had until a few years ago, so it automatically wins out for #1 Sega console for me, overall I just don't have time to go back and play everything now, every console that got more love than the Genesis did so because I didn't buy my own console until the OG Xbox came out. I will say though that I think the Dreamcast is a fairly close 2nd on the Sega list, my SCD, 32X and SMS only got turned on to make sure they worked, and my Saturn is still waiting for a few Killer Apps, so far it has only played Japanese imports, even though I know nothing about the Japanese language.
What do you think of the Michael Jackson game on the genesis? I think it was called Moonwalker or something like that. Also let Screwattack and AVGN help you.

fRenegade has a great list already.
I'll just add Wiz n' Liz, a fun and quirky game not too many people have played. And it's cheap.

I completely forgot about shining force. That's getting purchased soon. I'm also going to get a gen 1 sega cd. I know the gen 2 loads faster, but I've always wanted one.
