I was wanting to get a game boy and was looking at the 1989 original game boy. It was simple and played many good games, but then I was thinking about the game boy color for the better graphics (color). I mainly want to play games like Legend of Zelda,Pokemon, super Mario,Tetris, warrior land, fun games that I can play on the bus to or from school. Which one do you recommend for me?

EDIT: I've also heard the game boy color can play the original game boy games, is this true? Should I just get both?

The Game Boy Color plays both, so I'd recommend getting that if you can only get one.

Actually, now that I think about it, if you don't have one, get a backlit GBA SP since it's small and plays everything. I never saw a reason to use the other ones after getting a GBA.

The original Gameboy and Gameboy color are very cheap. I found a original Gameboy for only $4.99 at the thrift shop. While a Gameboy color only cost $14.99 at the used videogame shop. So it is possible to get both for very cheap.

But if you want just one portable system go for Gameboy color since it plays both original Gameboy games and Gameboy color games. plus it uses 2 batteries while the original Gameboy uses 4 batteries. Gameboy color is the way to go if you just want 1 handheld.

I have both Gameboy color and the original Gameboy. I like the original Gameboy better since the D-pad and buttons have better response when playing. I would recommend getting both systems since they are inexpensive and if you use the Gameboy and Gameboy color as intended. Playing games on the go. eventually you will end up losing you system, or having it dropped and broken. so getting both is worth it.

Backlit GBA SP would be the best. Even if not interested in GBA games, still worth it for the bright screen.

Here's another vote for getting a backlit GBA SP. The first two Gameboys are cool to play on from a retro standpoint, but the light on the SP is extremely helpful for when it starts to get dark (and it's damn nice during the day as well). Plus, you won't have to keep replacing batteries since the GBA SP only uses a built in chargeable battery.

Yep, GBA SP is the best. Backlit ones preferred. You can tell which ones are backlit by the color. They are both smaller and more portable and have a better screen w/o being much more expensive. Plus you can play GBA games, of course.

Of the original GB/GBC models, I guess I would go w/ GBC just because there are more games and it's smaller. I prefer the weird green screen of the original Game Boy for Game Boy games but it comes at the compromise of being significantly larger and needing more batteries. For either, if you are taking a bus to school while it's still dark out, you will need to get a worm light or something to play as the screens generate no light on their own.

@supersheepmam12: I say pick the Gameboy Color for obvious reasons. The sound quality is more better. The graphics are more sharper than that of the original Gameboy. You can play the Gameboy and Gameboy Color games on the Gameboy Color. You can also get different colored game systems for Gameboy Color more easier than the Gameboy.

Gameboy Color was a great handheld for the brief time it was around. As a bonus, some gameboy games receive color upgrades when you play them on the GBC, such as Kirby's Dreamland 2, due to its connectivity with the Super Game Boy for the SNES. Pokemon Red tints the game red, Pokemon Blue tints the game Blue, and Pokemon Yellow has some slight color. Many later games, such as Pokemon Gold and Silver, become wholly colorized if you play them on a GBC versus a GB.

And to add if price is a factor, even the frontlit GBA SP is still a big improvement over the GB/GBC. It's not as bright of course but it's still able to played in a dark room/dimly lit area.

Can't play Kirby Tilt n Tumble on an SP correctly. Always what keeps me from switching to SP.

Best solution is GBA with backlit screen, GBC with front lit screen is terrible. As far as buying original equipment I would go GBC.

Considering that the GBC was just a placeholder for the GBA after consumers demanded Nintendo release a full color handheld gaming device, and it shared more or less half it's library with the NGB by making them backwards compatible with the Game Boy, Super Game Boy, and Game Boy Pocket I'll have to say Nintendo Game Boy.
