It has not been officially verified that the device is a genuine prototype, but it certainly appears that it is.

He should find an adapter, try out a SNES cartridge and a PlayStation 1 disc. If this works then it is truly a gem. But it may just be a non functioning mock up. But it looks to be in working order. Sony and Nintendo did manage to create 2 versions of this. A 16 bit SNES-CD and a 32-Bit SNES-CD. Supposedly there were 200 of these manufactured. Demo units for game developers?
This is the first time one of these SNES-CD consoles were found. after the Sony/Nintendo partnership died. So if it works then a small fortune could be his.
Its basically how Sony started making consoles. I didn't know about this.
Shuhei Yoshida Has Reacted To The Newly Discovered Nintendo PlayStation Console
“When I joined Ken Kutaragi’s team [in 1993], there was a system called ‘Play Station’ that had both Super Nintendo cartridge support and some disc game support. Actually, I played some games [on it] as well.”

The older chaps here might remember Sony and Nintendo having talks. I remember reading about it in one of my mags (C&VG?)
It was proper exciting at the time
@Coolyfett: It's a prototype of the SNES-CD project Sony worked on for Nintendo before being quite literally dumped on the show floor during the Consumer Electronics Show in 1991 for Sonys bitter rival Phillips. Sony would later use the work put into building this device towards the original Playstation 1.
@Coolyfett: It's more of a prototype than it is a console. That system would not play PS1 games, as it was designed to play SNES-CD games that never came to be. The Nintendo Play Station was to be Nintendo's answer to the Sega/Mega CD.
Here's more info.
The SNES PlayStation Prototype Was Legit And Playable
Well despite the naysayers it turns out that it was legitimate and that it actually works. The owners of the system took it to the Retro.HK Expo to showcase it and played the iconic Street Fighter 2 on the console. The system works with cartridges but there are no known CDs that work on the console. The cartridge that was found alongside the system doesn’t work, but they have tried other cartridges without a problem.

Extremely cool. Wonder what type of offers he'll get for it. It could very well change his life drastically IMO.
@undergroundLPx: Apparently they already turned down an offer for $45k, plan on donating it to a vg museum.
@suicidesn0wman: Has it been confirmed as real?
Does the video in the link show you that its real.

Could be a modded snes. I'm skeptical until they verify through the right channels.

Don't know what counts as 'right channels', but they took it to a retro show and shown it off there, I think it's probably real. It does play SFC games, but does not play any cd games.
