This is part five of our six part SNES Retro Rumble to determine the best SNES title for our GameSpot Community Hall of Fame!
Vote for your favorite!
Mega Man X is my #1 game on the SNES so it gets my vote, but it sucks that my nominee, Sparkster, has to go up against it.
WTF is Sparkster? SMW all day, every day.
An excellent Konami platformer, and imo, it's a better game than Mario World.
------
This is why I am kind of iffy on the poll idea, because I posted a description of Sparkster in the nomination thread, but it was a pointless thing to do since there are almost 200 votes coming from people that don't post here. There's no reason to nominate a relatively unknown, let alone explain what it is, if it's going to get buried by the most popular games, and in this case, literally receive no votes. Let's be honest, past the main faces, the masses don't know about the depth of these old systems' libraries, and, personally, I just know I'm going to cringe at whatever ends up being voted for the Genesis when it's its turn...
@Renegade_Fury: You take these polls way too seriously. Also, your opinion is dead wrong. SMW all day, err day.
@Undertow207: The original purpose of the HOF was to recommend users on this board the best games on these systems. There's not much of a point if the people that are voting only know a few titles and are probably only going off nostalgia rather than current experience too. What's going to happen because of it, is that legitimately good games are not going to be listed because they're not mainstream, and accordingly, aren't going to rake in any votes.
You wouldn't know. I'd recommend both games to anyone collecting for the SNES, regardless though.
@Renegade_Fury: You should probably stop assuming that you know anything about me and that your opinions = fact. Also: SMW all day, err day. Rocket Knight is hot hipster garbage.
@Undertow207: You just said you didn't know what Sparkster was, so you've already went ahead and told me enough about yourself. I think you missed my point anyway though, since you apparently feel the need to repeatedly defend Mario World like this is system wars. Mario World should be on any SNES recommendation list.

I agree. A lot of gems are being eliminated because they're being put up against the top 5 games on snes.

Yeah, I mean look at this poll for example: So is F-Zero, which is actually a decently well known game, not going to be in the HOF since it has less than 10 votes? Because it's either that, or it's going to get stuck waiting for a while like it's a Charles Haley or Cris Carter. Right now this is looking like just another popularity contest instead of providing something useful to us retro players here.

Agreed. Maybe the staff will refine the process a little.

If they do, I hope it's not just putting the games that didn't make the first class in new polls. Otherwise the same thing is going to happen.
@xantufrog: Yeah, something like that would be good. At the end of the day, I just want us to create a helpful go-to guide for all of these systems. :)
@Renegade_Fury: It's a given that the popular titles are going to win. I think the hidden gem idea would good for another poll. I also like Sparkster myself but to me popular or not I do like Super Mario World more.
Application error so I can't vote at the moment, not sure if it's just me.
@Eikichi-Onizuka: I think it's fine to like Mario World more, but what annoys me is that it's fruitless to nominate anything that isn't super popular. I think everyone here knows what the given titles are already, so the recommendation lists need more substance to them than just having some of the most famous games. Even if you were to provide an explanation/mini review, it isn't going to help in this type of format, especially when taking into account that games which are not under the radar are getting obliterated too. Like for example with the Genesis, I doubt that Thunder Force IV, or if MUSHA gets nominated, that they will make it if they end up versing popular games. They'd probably both lose to Altered Beast if that was a nomination. So basically what I'm saying is that I thought the intent of the HOF was supposed to help us, rather than be a traffic generating tournament.
Yeah, I'm seeing an application error too now.

I think they should have the hall of fame winners and then the runner ups listed below and why they'e desired. People would then know what key games to pick up right off the bat and can find their niche through the list underneath. Something relating to that direction would be effective I believe.
they definitely need a hidden gem round(s) when this is done.
I played all of these games on the poll here, I love all the games on this poll(and no sparkster is not hipster garbage it is an extremely fun and innovative game) but the simple fact is super mario world is probably my favorite game of all time. I have played this game countless times in my life(including a recent playthrough about 2 months ago) and it never gets old , and the reality is very few games are going to be able to hold a candle to a game like mario world, in both popularity and awesomeness.
The problem is if the whole idea of these polls was to gather a list of games that everyone should play you are beating a dead horse by nominating games like mario world or a link to the past because the fact is EVERYONE already knows about these games, and if they have not already played them, I am sure they know that they should play them.
In my opinion the entire voting process is pretty dumb, for example one of the polls has both contra 3 and chrono trigger. Unsuprisingly chrono has like 52% of the vote, but realistically both games deserve a place in any snes hall of fame and I do not think anyone would disagree with me on that point. What should have been done is create a default list of obvious choices that nobody would contest as the must play games. There would be no need to vote on the obvious choices just put them there, then take noninations for hidden gems and let the community vote on the less obvious games to add to the hall of fame.

That's a nice idea - let's keep tabs on these things - this and the idea of running a hidden gems competition sometime
@Renegade_Fury: MUSHA was the other game I was considering for my third slot in the Genesis thread. And Wiz n' Liz, doubt anyone of them would make it past the first round. But with the name Hall of Fame actually unique/useful recommendations isn't what comes to mind, I thought it was a popularity contest, especially after DKC crushed SCIV(and I think FFIV was ahead also, but not by a huge amount). If we do the hidden gems thing I'll have to keep an eye out for that.
@Eikichi-Onizuka: My thinking going into this is that in sports, the Hall of Fame is an enshrinement for recognizing the best, so I wouldn't think it would be any different here. Popular vote is something used more in determining all-stars.
But anyway, yeah, as long as we can have a way of recognizing more games after this, it'll be fine.
@Renegade_Fury: You should probably stop assuming that you know anything about me and that your opinions = fact. Also: SMW all day, err day. Rocket Knight is hot hipster garbage.
Sparkster is one of the best games on the Genesis. The snes version sucks in comparison.

I think I remember liking the Genesis version more also. But Rocket Knight Adventures is still the best out of them(imo of course).
punch out is the best one here and i'll punch out any who say other wise and since so many think mario i think i'll have my work cut out for me :P
