What do you think of reproduction carts?

I admit it, I have bought some of these on eBay and even though it felt wrong doing so, it seems like these work fine in my systems. Is there any risk involved with buying a reproduction cart? I'm not really going crazy with them but just the occasional game or two.

Well, with games that are probably never going to be re-released I don't personally have a problem with it, but you could always use an emulator as well. I've never bought a repro cart, but I have bought homebrew carts.

Not sure why you'd get those instead of an emulator, or flash carts. Their physical looks? Sounds like a waste of money.

I guess I could do that. Thing was I don't plan to play many games like this anyway. They do look legit though, I mean almost indistinguishable from the real thing. Watch how many chicks I pick up because I have a "legit" looking Pokemon Red in my GameBoy. Just kidding of course. I may have wasted my money, but I can think of much worse ways to spend it, and these do look cool, like "new" no doubt.

With used game prices these days, repro producers are providing a valuable service.

I think it's fine. Emulation is a solid form of gaming at this point, I do not see any problem with them.

If I was going to emulate, I would just get something like an Everdrive that can accept a sd card where I could fit all the games in 1 cart.

Hello,

There is many kinds of "repro/cartmod":

1) Repro on bad quality, new, chinese PCB with new chinese flat chip (TO AVOID)
2) Repro on real old japanese PCB with good old japanese big chip (made by cartmodders, OK TO BUY)
3) Fake cartmod on bad quality chinese PCB with a translated ROM on a new chinese flat chip (TO AVOID)
4) Real cartmod on a real old japanese PCB with good old japanese big chip with a translated ROM inside (OK TO BUY)

New PCB, new chips, and globally new electronic stuff are not as solid as old ones. A real cartmod/repro is made by a cartmodder on a real hardware (crazy lifespan, for example, 40-year old famicom are still working). Please avoid new repros/cartmods/linkers/etc.. made on new material (with flat chips from china), the lifespan is less than 10 years.

I have picked up one or two, and fanhacks on a cart like Mortal Kombat: Arcade Edition for Genesis. But I have noticed some of the prices are getting a bit absurd. 50 bucks for AVGN vs Dr.Wily on a NES cart? Nah!
