I found this posted by another user and I think it describes the 3D Sonic games pretty well comparing them to the older Batman Movies.

Sonic Adventure, like the 1989 Batman film was very much a product of its time, but thanks to the
evolving and changing times has not been aging as well as its fans had hoped.
And, like the '89 Batman film, it was praised by critics from a presentation
standpoint. Batman was lauded for its set designs and Danny Elfman's
groundbreaking music, while SA gained praise for it's next-gen graphics and Jun
Senoue's soundtrack.

Sonic Adventure 2, like Batman Returns, gave the fans more
of the streamlined action they were asking for, plus a little sympathy towards
the villains. Again, the presentation was top-notch. And, like the second
Batman film, fans and critics are to this day still arguing whether or not it is
superior to its predecessor.

Sonic Heroes, like Batman Forever, took the
franchise in some very new directions, skewed younger with its target demo, and
the results were hugely mixed. It, like Forever, has its fans (I'm actually one
of them), but on the whole, the masses would rather forget about it.

And that
brings us to 2006. It's Batman & Robin. An idiotic self-parody of a story?
Strike one. Sidekicks who detract from the hero and are doubly annoying?
Strike two. Contains an plot universally reviled by every aspect of their
respective fanbases.

Except Sonic Unleashed wasn't Batman Begins, maybe the Wii/PS2 versions, but who knows

And if you're curious: Shadow the Hedgehog is the equivalent of Catwoman.

There will never be a Sonic game that is the equivalent of the Dark Knight. There just won't be.

Not even the Black Knight? :P

You know, it's a strange thing. Not only does "Sonic and the Black Knight" play on "The Dark Knight" Batman movie's title, but "Sonic Unleashed" is suspiciously similar to the "Star Wars: The Force Unleashed" title. Coincidental?

I just don't see the comparison. The Batman movies may have bombed at one time but once the license was given to a competent director (Christopher Nolan), the franchise was rebooted too successfully fix old mistakes.

Sonic is nowhere near as complex as Batman or as big of a comercial bomb. Sonic games are aimed at young audiences so the stories don't impact the final product as much and furthermore, a large chunk of the fanbase is retarded enough to buy and praise everything to come out of the franchise so no matter how bad the series gets, it will always be a successful cash cow making a "The Dark Knight" like return to form highly unlikely.

So what I'm basically saying here is that the key difference between these 2 is Sonic is still making money and it will probably never put out a triple A title again.

Unless they follow sonicphc's(?) advice. Making him more like James Bond and less like a kid-friendly jock would certainly be a step in that direction.

And we all know Shadow doesn't have to be psychotic to make a pencil disappear...

Sega maybe got bored, however who knows. However I do have an idea where they wanted to really expand Sonic. However it feels like UT3 to me all over again... new direction, better graphics, annoying side kicks. Sonic Heroes sold well at least... so in a way, it's was a success to the marketing team.

And if you're curious: Shadow the Hedgehog is the equivalent of Catwoman.

I did think the team based mechanic in Sonic Heroes as well as the similar tag team element in Sonic Advance 3 worked well. It bothered the hell out of me in 2006 (and they make this point in the walkthrough vids I posted) that your sidekick pals follow you around at least in hub worlds and boss fights but don't do anything. It would've been cooler had they instead of just having these couple areas where you switched over to Tails or Rouge or whovever, to just have them tag along then use them occasionally for a team based attack. Kinda like in Kingdom Hearts where you don't actually control Goofy or Donald, but they can team up with you for attacks.
