Well here's the story I was telling you about. So expect to see a long post but I thought I'd take a shot at writing my own take on Sonic's origins. While I don't read the comics I did keep the character of uncle Chuck who I liked from SatAM as well as a few city names might sound familar.

The Story of Sonic the hedgehog

Not much is known of Sonic before his first adventure. Only that he was a super fast hedgehog that believed in using his super speed to stop the evil Dr. Robotnick (aka Dr. Eggman) from enslaving all the animals of Mobius.

Sonic himself, for many years didn't know of his origin. He never knew his parents. They died when he was very young. For most of his childhood he lived with his uncle Chuck. When Sonic would ask his uncle about his parents or ask why he could run so fast, his uncle would say, "You are just unique. Your parents loved you very much and that's all that's important right now. Someday, when you are older, I will be able to tell you much more." Sonic eventually left it at that. As he got older, his uncle did eventually tell him that his parents were Samuel and Sandra Hedgehog and that his father was a scientist.

Chuck and Sonic, along with their dog Muttskie lived in a small village far far away from the bright lights and bustling activity of the large city where Sonic's father once worked. Chuck also, once an inventor, had retired to a quiet life in the village of Green Hills. Chuck used money from his inventions to open a small hot dog stand and Sonic was his delivery boy. Green Hills was a beautiful, peaceful place...for a time.

When Sonic was fifteen, his uncle sat him down to talk.

"Sonic," said uncle Chuck. "You're growing into a fine young hedgehog."

"What's wrong uncle Chuck?" asked Sonic.

"I know for some time now, you've wanted to know more about your parents as well as yourself. You're special you know," said Uncle Chuck.

"Yeah," said Sonic. "You won't believe how fast I can run now!"

"Why can't you tell me?" asked Sonic angrily. "Why can't you tell me about my parents and why am I the way I am? I'm not a child anymore!"

Chuck looked down and sighed. "You're right," he said. "You're growing up and you are old enough to know the truth. When you get back from this last delivery, we'll sit down and I'll tell you everything."

This would be the last day Sonic would ever see his uncle or his home again. He returned from his delivery to find the entire village in ruins, ravaged by huge robotic creatures. Filled with despair and anger Sonic flung himself at the robots, rolling into a ball and smashing through them. All he wanted to do was make the creator of these evil monsters pay dearly.

Sonic never went home again.

He did eventually catch up to the robots and their master, an evil scientist named Dr. Robotnick. Robotnick captured animals to turn into robots to make slaves in his huge factory that now stood in the city that was once Mobitropolis. Day and night, the robot slaves worked to make weapons of war for the doctor. As we all know Sonic put an end to Dr. Robotnick's factory and freed many of the imprisoned animals. He managed to reunite many families.

"Thank you sir," said a grateful woman. "What is your name?"

"I'm Sonic the Hedgehog," said Sonic.

"You are a true hero," she said.

"The world needs more heroes like you," said someone else.

It was at this point Sonic realized his purpose. The world needed a hero to protect them from fiends like Dr. Robotnick who had gotten away after they battled. As he years went by Sonic continued to fight for justice and stop Dr. Robotnick, who also called himself "Eggman." He was eventually joined by his friends Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Cream, but it was his encounter with his mysterious double, Shadow that Sonic began to question his own being. Why did Shadow look so similar to him? At first Sonic thought that possibly Eggman had cloned Shadow from his own DNA but then he learned that Shadow existed almost fifty years before Sonic was born. Still the similarities between him and Shadow was enough to make Sonic wonder.

For years Sonic tried to piece together the clues of his life, but he still didn't have much to go on. Finally he decided to seek advice from the Master Emerald. He went to the Ancient Ruins and the emeralds' resting place.

"Master Emerald," he said. "I know Knuckles is the only one who can use your power but I wish to learn about my family and my purpose in life. Can you help me?"

For a few seconds it was silent and then, in his mind the Master Emerald spoke, "Seek out Dr. Terrapin who lives in Green Hills. He is a very old scientist who may have what you seek."

This was the only lead Sonic had and realized it was now or never. For the first time in years he would return to his childhood home. He decided to bid his friends farewell first.

"Let us go with you Sonic," said Amy.

"At least let me go," said Tails. "I mean we've been pals for years. We can take the plane."

"No," said Sonic. "I have to do this alone. I want to know who I really am." And with that he sped off into the distance.

After running for several days, he reached the town of Green Hills. The last time Sonic was there, it had been destroyed by Robotnick's badnicks. However, with time, comes healing. The town had been rebuilt and was much larger than before. New businesses had come up and it no longer looked like the horrible site Sonic remembered. There were no more charred ruins and no reminisce of Uncle Chuck's hotdog stand. For a few moments Sonic looked around and began to remember the old days. He remembered playing with the neighborhood kids, delivering hot dogs and playing with his dog, Mutskie.

"Sonic? Is that you?" said a voice that broke Sonic from his daydream.

"Robbie Rabbit?" said Sonic as he turned and saw a tall, gray rabbit.

"Sonic the hedgehog," he said. "It's been years. Well I don't need to ask what you've been up to all these years."

"Yeah," said Sonic blushing a little. "Kinda funny how things work out."

"So where do you live now?" Robbie asked.

"I live on Angel Island," said Sonic.

"You mean the legendary floating island? That place is real?" asked Robbie in awe.

"You bet," said Sonic. "I can't complain. It's quiet and peaceful. So what about you? I figured everyone abandoned this town after that robot attack."

"Well, my family and I escaped and moved to Spring Hill City and for a few years no one wanted to come back here. But as the years passed, people did begin to rebuild and I began to miss the town so I came back here to live too. I am sorry about Chuck."

"It's, ok," said Sonic. "If he hadn't died, I may have not become what I am today."

"Well even as a kid, your speed impressed even me," said Robbie.

"Well, Rob," said Sonic. "The reason I'm here is that I'm looking for a guy named Dr. Terrapin who I was told lives in this town.

"Funny, you should ask?" said Robbie. "This old turtle guy, moved into town not too long ago and he lives in the large blue house about two blocks from here. He's sort of a strange, old loner. Why are you looking for him?"

"I think he may know something about my parents. You know for years I wanted to know about them," said Sonic.

"Well, good luck man," said Robbie. "If you're still around later, maybe we could hang out." With that Robbie took his leave and Sonic went to see Dr. Terrapin."

Just as Robbie said, Sonic approached a large blue house a couple blocks down the road. He took a deep breath, walked toward the door and rang the bell. The door opened slightly and Sonic could see part of a green face glaring at him.

"Yes?" said the old man. "What do you want, if you're here to sell something, I already have it!"

"No sir," said Sonic. "I'm Sonic the Hedgehog and I wanted to speak with you about my parents." The door opened wide and an old turtle stood before Sonic. He was old and wrinkled wearing an old faded sweater and pants. He adjusted his spectacles and stared for a few moments. "My word, it's really you," he said. "Please come in."

Sonic followed Dr. Terrapin inside. He looked around his living room. Displayed on the wall were photos, certificates and newspaper clippings. This old turtle was once a great scientist, then, sitting beside the couch on a small end table, Sonic picked up a dusty photo. In the photo was Dr. Terrapin, about twenty years younger, to his left a stocky man with a bushy mustache who looked familiar to Sonic and on the right, a blue hedgehog that looked like Sonic except he had a dark mustache. Sonic knew it had to be his father. Sonic looked at Dr. Terrapin who was now sitting down in his easy chair.

"Sit down, Sonic," he said. "I know what you want to ask so go ahead."

"You knew my father?" asked Sonic as he sat down.

"Yes," replied the Doctor. "And your mother."

"I have so much to ask and I don't know where to start," said Sonic.

"Then why don't I just tell you your whole story from the beginning," said Dr. Terrapin.

"Many years ago, I worked for the government as a research scientist. The two people you see me with in that picture are your father, Samuel Hedgehog and the other man was Ivo Robotnick."

"Eggman?" said Sonic.

"Yes, the same," Dr. Terrapin continued. "Ivo, Sam and myself worked to design new weapon technologies for the government including robot soldiers, flying airships, bombs and much more. Ever wondered why the GUN soldier weapons and Eggman's weapons seem so similar? Who do you think designed them?"

"Eggman?" asked Sonic.

"Exactly," Dr. Terrapin continued. "At the time Ivo was a young and ambitious scientist, much like your father. He wanted to follow in the footsteps of his father Gerald Robotnick. I take it you've met Project Shadow?"

"You mean Shadow?" asked Sonic. "Yeah, we've crossed paths."

"Shadow, as you may know was created fifty years ago. He was an orphaned baby that the government 'adopted' and genetically altered with alien DNA to be their ultimate weapon. He could run fast and jump high. He's bulletproof, fireproof and eyes as keen as a hawk. Also it was around this time that the Chaos emeralds were discovered, using the power of one of them, they made Shadow immortal. This way he would never age nor would his muscles weaken even after being cryogenically frozen for decades as well as he gained his powers of Chaos Control."

"I don't care about Shadow right now," snapped Sonic. "What does he have to do with me and my past?"

"Calm down," said Dr. Terrapin. "I'm getting to it. The power of the emeralds ran through Shadow's veins, which inadvertently gave him his 'Chaos control' power.

The government realized that Shadow might be too dangerous for his own good, so Shadow was frozen and locked away for fifty years. The government didn't kill him because they knew the time might come when his abilities would be needed. This is where you come in, Sonic.

During the time when your father and I worked together, we learned about Project Shadow and even were shown the area where he was held. The general told us that he wanted to try at making a clone of Shadow, this time correcting some their past mistakes. You're father jumped at the idea but asked if that a clone was made, that he and his wife, Sandra could raise it as their own. You see, Sonic, your parents wanted a child so badly but couldn't have one on their own. Also, after hearing how cold and harsh Shadow was, he believed that if the child came from a loving home, it would give it balance and a sense of good over evil. Using combined DNA from Shadow and your parents, 'Project Sonic' was created. Your mother was able to carry you through her pregnancy."

"So I was a clone of Shadow?" asked Sonic.

"About 90% of you is a clone, the other 10% is your parent's DNA which is why you are blue and Shadow is black," said Dr. Terrapin. "Also recent evidence suggests that being a clone doesn't nessicarily mean being an identical twin. You and Shadow have nearly identical DNA but it is distributed differently."

"So what happened to my parents and what about Eggman?" asked Sonic.

"This is where things, get nasty," said Dr. Terrapin. "When we started working together, Ivo, Sam and I got along pretty well but as we began to design more powerful and destructive weapons, Ivo started to change. He believed that the government should take control of the whole planet because we had the best technology and we were wasting our time waiting around to defend ourselves. He even had this insane idea of how to turn living organisms into robots. He claimed the machine would help save people who were dying or give more time to those in need of an organ transplant, but Sam and I knew that turning a living creature into a robot was against the laws of nature. But things got really bad after you were conceived. Ivo told Sam that he couldn't raise a creature created to be a weapon with love and kindness because it would lack the tenacity to defeat its enemy. It wasn't long after that incident that Ivo quit working at the lab and disappeared.

I knew Sam was worried for both Sandra and your own sake. I think we both knew that Ivo was planning to overthrow the government and use his weapons against us. We tried to warn the military, but they refused to believe us and thought if he was planning an attack with his machines, they'd know about it ahead of time. Your father was especially worried that Ivo would come for you and turn you into his slave. When he returned a week or so later he was in a panic. He gathered up all his important research notes and had me shred and burn them, and then we deleted all research files from our computers. I asked him what was wrong and all he could tell me was that he sent you to live with your uncle Chuck in Green Hills and that as soon as his affairs were in order, he and Sandra were leaving. He also told me to get out of town as soon as I could. That was the last I saw of your father."

"So what happened?" asked Sonic.

"I did what he said," said Dr. Terrapin. "Once all our research was destroyed, I packed up everything I could and left town. A week later I saw on the news where Dr. Robotnick invaded Mobitropolis, overthrew the government and set up his own weapons factory. I thought your parents had gotten away but later I learned they hadn't."

"So they were killed?" asked Sonic.

"I don't really know," said Dr. Terrapin. "I assumed they were. My theory is Robotnick wanted you to shape into his minion and was going to stop at nothing to get you even if he had to kill your parents. But when he didn't find you, he set up base in the city and built up his army and it wasn't until years later he learned of your whereabouts in Green Hills and your uncle."

Sonic sat quietly for several minutes trying to take in everything he had been told.

Part 2

"For years I wasn't sure if you were alive, especially after hearing about the attack on Green Hills," said Dr. Terrapin. "Then when I heard about this blue hedgehog who had super speed, I knew it was you, Sonic. Don't you see, Sonic? You did what your father hoped; you were raised with love and became the hero you were always meant to be. You stand to fight the injustice that Robotnick inflicted upon the world. Even after Shadow was released, you managed to still be victorious.

"But did Robotnick kill my parents?" asked Sonic.

"That I cannot answer for certain," said Dr. Terrapin. "My theory is Ivo was searching for you after your father left the lab. I remember he came to the lab one afternoon as I was packing up the remainder of my things. He questioned me about the whereabouts of Sam and you and I told him I didn't know and that all I knew was that you and your family had left town. I worried about what he might do to me, but he stormed out of the building. He obviously wasn't interested in kidnapping an old turtle like me."

"So why didn't you come find me?" asked Sonic.

"I did think that it was possible that Robotnick was watching me. That might have been why he let me live. To see if I went looking for you," He said. "I wanted to find you but then once I heard about your exploits I had a feeling you would come and find me."

There was another long silence for a few moments. Sonic took in all the information Dr. Terrapin had given him.

"I wish I could tell you more," said Dr. Terrapin sadly. "The only one who truly knows what happened to your parents is Dr. Eggman himself. I will tell you that even though the bodies of your parents were never found, I got permission to make a gravesite dedicated to your parents here in town alongside the one for your uncle Chuck if you want to visit it."

"Thank you doc," said Sonic as he got up to shake his hand. "You've told me much more than I expected and I appreciate that. I have to get going but I'll stop and visit the gravesite before I leave town."

"Thank you, Sonic," said Dr. Terrapin. "You've given this old turtle some closure and now I can die without any regrets." There was a brief pause. "You do look so much like your father, except you have your mother's eyes."

Sonic smiled. Dr. Terrapin gave Sonic some pictures and newspaper clippings of his mom and dad before leaving so Sonic could at least know what they looked like.

Sonic found his way to the graveyard and managed to follow the doctor's instruction to where his family's grave was. He found three beautifully polished stones with the names "Samuel Hedgehog, Sandra Hedgehog and Charles Hedgehog." He knelt down and placed the flowers he bought for the graves. Even though there were no actual bodies in the graves, it still felt better to at least know his family was remembered.

"Hi mom, dad, uncle Chuck," said Sonic quietly. "I'm sorry I didn't come to see you sooner. You probably know, I'm rather busy these days. I wish I could've known you mom and dad and uncle Chuck, why didn't you tell me? Were you afraid of what might happen? I wish I knew." For a few moments Sonic was filled with anger and then it was sadness. "You all died because of me. It's all my fault." He was on the verge of crying but then heard someone approaching. He turned and it was Robbie Rabbit.

"Hey Sonic," said Robbie. "Dr. Terrapin said you'd be here. You ok?"

"Yeah," said Sonic. "At least now I know about my parents."

"It's awful what Dr. Eggman has done to your family," said Robbie.

"Eggman!" said Sonic to himself.

"What Sonic?" asked Robbie.

"Nothing," said Sonic. "Look Rob, it was great seeing you but I just realized I have to go do something!" And with that Sonic sped off.

Dr. Eggman had spent a long day working on new weapon designs and repairing robots and was retiring to his quarters for the evening. He entered the dark room and put his papers on the nearby table. Then turned on the small lamp by his bed. Then looked in the mirror to see someone standing on the other side of the room.

"Hello Dr. Eggman," said Sonic quietly.

"Sonic?" said a startled Dr. Eggman. He began to reach for the security alarm but then Sonic spoke.

"I'm not here to fight tonight," said Sonic. "I came to ask you something important and then I'll leave."

"What do you want?" asked Eggman.

"I met an old friend of yours," said Sonic. "Dr. Terrapin?"

"That old fool is still alive?" said Eggman. "So what did he tell you?"

"Well he told me everything he knew about you and my parents and my birth except one thing that only you know?"

"And what is that?" asked Eggman.

"Did you kill my parents?" asked Sonic.

Eggman paused and a cocky smirk came across his face. "So is that what you think?" he asked slyly.

"Uh, well..." Sonic stammered.

"Yes I did!" said Eggman proudly. "I was searching for you. I knew about 'Project Sonic' and that you were an attempt to correct the mistakes made with "Project Shadow." They wanted a being as powerful as Shadow but your father believed if the clone was raised by a loving family, it would grow up to fight injustice and be good an moral as opposed to a cold-hearted killing machine like Shadow, but you see I wanted a cold hearted killing machine. I wanted to raise you to be a fearsome warrior, loyal to me who would assist me so I could conquer the world! After I quit the lab, I began to build my robot army, by kidnapping residents and turning them into robots. At first I used only the poor drifters that hung out in the slums of the city but eventually I worked my way up to the upper classes."

"I know all that!" yelled Sonic. "How did you kill my parents!?"

"I managed to track down your father and mother," said Eggman. "I had my robots search the house for you but you were gone so I captured your parents and tortured them until they told me where you were hiding, but they refused. They could've saved their own pathetic lives had they just handed you over to me but instead they let me torture them to death. You should've heard them beg for mercy before they died."

Sonic fought to hold back his emotions. He had to endure this no matter how awful it was. He needed to know the truth.

"So once your parents were dead, I spent the next fifteen years searching for you. I sent my robot scouts all over Mobius trying to find the blue hedgehog named Sonic. During that time I took over Mobitropolis and continued to build up my army. Then one day, my scout found you and your uncle living in Green Hills. That's when I sent some robots to destroy the village and find you but you weren't there at the time and your uncle wouldn't speak. I didn't matter though, the attack on the village was enough to bring you out of hiding and you came to me but unfortunately it was too late because as you can see, you and I are enemies now," said Eggman.

"You killed my family!" said Sonic quietly. Then in a sudden rage he rammed Eggman into the wall, pinning him. Sonic glared at Eggman with a sense of anger he had never felt before.

"Yes I did," said Eggman gasping. "Come on, I know you want to kill me. I am unarmed. Just do it. It was what you were made for."

Eggman was taunting him. Sonic realized this and as much as he wanted to kill Eggman at that moment more than anything but then he realized something.

"No," said Sonic. "I'm not like you! Though I think my father made me. He wanted me to kill you and I will...but today is not that day. Not here. Not this way."

"See that's what makes you weak!" said Eggman. "It doesn't matter, I have Shadow now and unlike you, he is immortal. One day you will grow old and weak while Shadow will remain the same and though I'll grow old as well, Shadow will carry on with my plans."

"Shadow will never bow down to you," said Sonic. "Like me, he has free will as well."

Sonic said nothing more and just left as quietly as he came.

Sonic began the long journey back to Angel Island. The events of the day had been too much to endure. He knew he could've killed Eggman right then and there, but there was nothing heroic in killing an unarmed man by sneaking in his bedroom. They would come they would face off in battle and then he would carry out his father's wish.

"Sonic?" said a voice from the dark shadows. Sonic stopped and turned. Shadow emerged from the darkness.

"Hey Shadow," said Sonic. "What's up?"

"I heard you were out searching for your past," said Shadow.

"Yes, I know," said Sonic. "I am a clone of you."

"You're a watered-down version of me!" Shadow snapped. "I learned of my past. During his time on the Space Colony ARK, Professor Gerald met with a race of black aliens who knew how to use the Chaos Emeralds to genetically alter a living creature into an unstoppable weapon of destruction. I was a child no one wanted so I was turned into an experiment, but they thought I was too powerful and too dangerous, so they locked me away from...Maria and everyone."

"Shadow," said Sonic. "I'm sorry you had such a horrible life. I know how it feels to lose a loved one and..."

"Shut up!" snapped Shadow. "You may be my watered-down clone, but you're not me. You can't use Chaos control and someday you'll grow old and die and I will live on and the humans will pay!"

"When are you going to let go of your hate?" said Sonic. "A human killed my family but I don't want to destroy all of humanity. I choose to use my powers for good. You could do the same and continue on when I'm gone."

"That is why you're weak. You're compassion is you're downfall." And with that statement, Shadow sped off.

Sonic returned to his home, Angel Islad but knew nothing would be the same again.

This is where I ended it. Sorry to cut it off mainly because I had several ideas to continue this with various ideas of what really happened to Sonic parents. (notice no real answer's came and how Eggman hesitated when Sonic asked him.)

He did admit to killing them, but he could just be saying that. It is all up to you, actually.

BABYLON1990

Sonic's a cartoon character who really never ages. From his first game in 1991 he's been 15 or 16 years old so all of the events he learned about happened for the most part, when he was a baby then for 15 years he was raised by his Uncle Chuck and I had them live in Green Hills because that's the first level of the first game. So I tried to make it that the first game began after the attack on Sonic's home village. Sonic pursued the robots in order to find their creator.

The old Sonic games had no story. Just Eggman (Dr. Robotnick at the time) who kidnapped animals and turned them into robots. If you haven't played Sonic Adventure 2 (Dreamcast/Gamecube) you should pick it up because that's where you learn some of Shadow's story and how he and Sonic first met.

[quote="Eggman"]...They let me toture them to death.demoman_chaos

He did admit to killing them, but he could just be saying that. It is all up to you, actually.

I was trying to make it that Eggman was lying to Sonic. When Sonic says "You killed my parents!" Eggman looks a bit surprised and says "so that's what you think?" The idea is that Eggman is lying and saying it just to get to Sonic. As for his parents I had a couple ideas of might have really happened.

Option A: Sonic's parents stay dead. Eggman really did kill them

Option B: Sonic's parents are alive. They did escape but feared if they went looking for Sonic, Eggman would follow them, so they moved to the other side of the planet, changed their names and started a new life (even had their own kids finally) in order for Eggman to lose them and so he wouldn't come after Sonic. Sonic does eventually find them and asks where they've been all these years and they explain that even when he got older they wanted to come find him but didn't feel right showing up after 15 years.

Option C: Sonic's mother is dead but his father was turned into an experiment we know as Metal Sonic. Makes for a nice "Star Wars" moment doesn't it?

Metal Sonic: Sonic! I am your father!

Sonic: Nooooo! That's impossible!

I'll eventually post some little stories I put together about how Sonic met Tails, Knuckles and backstories on those characters.

I know we aren't voting, but I personally like B. The most, then C. However, C. is too cliche (cliche with the little accent over the e. I wish GameSpot let you put accents over letters, but they don't.)
