ever since sonic the hedgehog genesis sonic and mario fans have debated who is better. but with sonic and mario being in three games together and sonic on nintendo's systems on nearly every game is the rivalry over? the choice is yours sonicspot members. in my opinion the battle is done and mario has definatley won. not that sonic is bad it's just that he has struggled some lately but nearly every mario game is praised as a great title.

the war ended on 2002 when Sonic debuted on the Gamecube. And all those crossovers are big marks that the war ended long ago

The old Genesis war has been long over. It died with the Dreamcast however some keep the spirit of the rivalry alive for nostalgia sake. I mean it got Sonic in Brawl didn't it?

I don't know how well a Mario and Sonic platformer would ACTUALLY work. The idea is solid but it's just so high profile. It's the kinda thing that would be amazing or horrible. I don't think it would be the kinda thing that would be considered "just okay" by many people at all.

However, I wouldn't mind seeing it happen just for the sake of seeing it happen. I wouldn't be disappointed if it didn't though.

It was over years ago and it certainly is now. Sonic can't touch hardly any Mario games quality since going multiplatform.

The other problem arises in that they both have totally different types of gameplay and that merging the two is tricky though most think Miyamoto could do it. Still I've come to the conclusion that there's only three ways it could work.

Mario and Sonic Heroes: You play as both characters switching between each one for certain obstacles. Sonic uses his speed to dash through loops and such while you switch to Mario for more platforming based obstacles and swimming. Of course there's the question of Mario keeping up. Perhaps they could bring back FLUDD from Sunshine set to its turbo setting and the two would also have killer team based attacks for larger baddies.

Option #2

Mario and Sonic Adventure: Two separate storylines. One where you play as Sonic with the high speed, race to the finish gameplay reminscent of Adventures Sonic stages or Unleashed's day stages. Mario's storyline would have gameplay like Galaxy and 64 with the two storylines merging in a final battle. And NO OTHER CHARACTERS WOULD BE PLAYABLE. One user once said they wanted to see a game with 15 playable characters. Ugh!

And finally

An RPG Making a platformer with these two is a tough task, an RPG would be easier as both have been in decent RPGs and it would allow for the supporting cast to actually be useful of course a lot of Sonic and Mario fans aren't RPG players but it would bring the two together without trying to make two totally different types of gameplay work.

An RPG is the best idea because Nintendo have made excellent Mario RPGS. You could have Mario and Sonic joined by maybe Knuckles or Luigi but you can only have 2 during battle like Paper Mario.

Yeah an RPG would work for both of them since they've both had RPGs and they were pretty good.

Since the beginning I actually loved Sonic and while I did not hate Mario I just had a SEGA and had that rivalrly with Nintendo but when Sonic went to Nintendo systems. I played more and more Mario games ended up really liking that he overtook Sonic in terms of my favourite character.

Sonic being on the slide has affected my love for him. I still like him as a character but not his recent games. I sort of only like the 2D games and Sonic Adventure games.

I think the rivalry's been over since Sonic moved to being on Nintendo consoles (in addition to PS, and Xbox).

Yes I think we covered that already.

I was thinking, Sonic ends up in Mario's world, and Mario in Sonic's.

Part of the reason for the Sonic/Mario rivalry (apart from the 16 bit console war) was because of how similar they were.

Fans from both sides have to concede that what we love about Sonic, we also love about Mario. One might have a certain x-factor over the other (for me, there is no substituting Sonic), but that's no reason to dismiss them.

I would actually prefer something more like Shining Forcew (you know, that kickass RPG for the genesis later ported to the GBA), but it does sound temptating

I think that the rivalry never ends, because the judgment day is still a long long way, both are major mascots, the world will find out which suits for the future positive critics.

I actually took that from the Winter Olympic games, every character have their rival from the opposite franchise (Eg: Mario and Sonic). Depending on their role on main franchises games is their rival. Still, why Robotnik/ Eggman rivals with Wario? probably the moustache, now again with Yoshi and Knuckles, erm....

I say that the rivalry was definitely over when Sonic was on the Dreamcast. Sonic didn't even hold a candlestick during his time on the Dreamcast, he held a pebble-size piece of wax (he was more of a fake rival then a real one). It was only on the good Sega Genesis (or Mega Drive depending on where you are from) that Sonic was actually an official rival of Mario.

I would like to see a cross-over platformer. Seperate levesl for Mario and for Sonic.

I have always wondered, how would each do if they were put into the others levels? Like how Sonic would fair in 1-1 and how Mario would do in Green Hill Zone.

It wouldn't work. Sonic would never be able to build up any moment because he would keep having to jump over pipes (if we're talking 2D levels) nor would Sonic be good at running around a 3D area trying to find a star. Then it's just the Knuckles Emerald hunting levels from the Adventure games again. The same as Mario wouldn't be able to get through green hills because he couldn't run through the loops or roll into a ball to bust through rocks in tunnels.

Logic people. Logic.

Sonic builds momentum about as fast as Mario.
But assuming they both can use the other's level objects, the only downfall to Sonic in Mario levels is the underwater ones. If he used the warp pipes, he might be able to survive the 1 water level in Bowser's final castle.
Mario however may be able to get to the first Robotnik boss fight, but I don't think he could beat him since he wouldn't be able to jump high enough to land on him (unless if he had Yoshi, then he might be able to).

As much as I like Mario, you're right. There wouldn't be much of a way for Mario to hurt Eggman at all.

...can't Mario jump higher than Sonic? Like, jumping is his thing. It's all he does. I'd hope he'd be better at it than Sonic... and seeing as Bowser and Eggman are both critically weak to "jump on the head," I bet Mario could handle Sonic's first few levels just fine. I should hack something together sometime and test that for myself...

I think they both cover about the same amount of screen space per jump.
Mario could get to Robotnik, but since Sonic could not get high enough to land on him and Mario can't attack from below I think Mario may not be able to win. Only way he could beat the disco ball of doom is perhaps with the spin jump thing in SMW that let him bounce off of pirahna plants.
