The other problem arises in that they both have totally different types of gameplay and that merging the two is tricky though most think Miyamoto could do it. Still I've come to the conclusion that there's only three ways it could work.
Mario and Sonic Heroes: You play as both characters switching between each one for certain obstacles. Sonic uses his speed to dash through loops and such while you switch to Mario for more platforming based obstacles and swimming. Of course there's the question of Mario keeping up. Perhaps they could bring back FLUDD from Sunshine set to its turbo setting and the two would also have killer team based attacks for larger baddies.
Option #2
Mario and Sonic Adventure: Two separate storylines. One where you play as Sonic with the high speed, race to the finish gameplay reminscent of Adventures Sonic stages or Unleashed's day stages. Mario's storyline would have gameplay like Galaxy and 64 with the two storylines merging in a final battle. And NO OTHER CHARACTERS WOULD BE PLAYABLE. One user once said they wanted to see a game with 15 playable characters. Ugh!
And finally
An RPG Making a platformer with these two is a tough task, an RPG would be easier as both have been in decent RPGs and it would allow for the supporting cast to actually be useful of course a lot of Sonic and Mario fans aren't RPG players but it would bring the two together without trying to make two totally different types of gameplay work.
