First of all, hopefully everyone checked out Spikey's excellent review of the SatAM boxset. I was killing time surfing the web and came across these interesting pieces of artwork. What you are about to see were early ideas that would eventually become SatAM.
The Sonic comics debuted a few months before SatAM as I recall. Sally, Rotor, Bunnie and Antoine were established characters in the comics because, at the time there was just Sonic, Tails and Robotnick and you need a few more characters to have a decent story. This pictures appeared in a comic book prior to SatAM's debut on TV.

Sonic was going to have a different group of furries including the Flicky bird though Tails is no where to be seen though these may have appeared before Sonic 2 came out. The critters included: Joe Sushi (walrus), Chirps (chicken), Porker Lewis (pig), and Flicky (bird). And though not said to be a princess, the female was going to be called "Sally Acorn" which of course was the name of Sonic's gal pal from SatAM and the comics.
They were called "The Freedom Team" and looked a little more like a bad 80s rock band then that harkens back to Sonic's original concept of being part of a rock band.
