Many people think that Sonic 4 brought back Sonic. However, I don't think this. Don't get me wrong, Sonic 4 is a good game. However, Sonic 4 and Colors won't be enough to bring back Sonic. If Sonic wants to have his grand return, he will need to have a consistent stream of good games. 2 games are not enough to make us forget Sonic '06, Sonic Genesis, and Sonic and the Black Knight.

But it is a start.

Although Sonic Team didn't make Sonic Genesis.

That's not the point. It is a Sonic game though.

You can't blame Sonic Team for a remake of a game, especially Sonic's FIRST EVER GAME, that they didn't remake.

Especially when you can play Sonic 1 in about 1 of any of the 20 different Sonic/SEGA collection games and even on your cell phone.

Yeah. WHAT WENT WRONG? How did they screw up so much on Sonic Genesis? Nintendo was able to port Super Mario Bros. to the GBA, and even though the graphics looked squished, it was still playable. Sonic Genesis was completly unplayable, and it is an example of what "Genesis does what Nintendon't."

I'm pretty sure 2 games obviously isn't enough to say "COMEBACK ACCOMPLISHED", but these games have shown far more promise than anything else thus far, so I think things are slowly getting back on the right track.

Yeah, they probably will be the start of a new wave of good Sonic games (i hope at least). Sonic 4 is pretty good but not what i expected, but Colors looks really good, and I at least hope that Sonic Team tries to make a good Sonic game for the PS3 and 360.

I always thought of is as a mean-spirited to prove that old solgan. (Nice try, Sega. The GBA is WAY better than that.)

Well I see what he's getting at, even if Colors is the great 3D game we hope it is, it's not enough to sustain momentum. Remember when Tomb Raider Legends came out? At first people thought Lara Croft might be ressurected? But then came Underworld and it was back to the same bad camera and samey gameplay.

It's not enough for one game to be good, it has to stay consistent and Sega can't just keep rehashing Colors either. Innovating Sonic gameplay is not having werehogs, playable friends and weapons. Those are just gimmicks. They have to realize what makes the gameplay so good, embrace the platforming aspects of the originals and find creative ways to integrate those into 3D Sonic games.

Sonic 4: Episode 2 will have to step things up a bit more. It won't have nostalgia on it's side this time (see Megaman 10). Hopefully they do bring in Knuckles and Tails for co-op play. NSMBWii made us all want that with a Sonic game.

But seeing as how Sega isn't putting a ton of hype into Free Riders and nixed anymore "storybook" games, it's a sign that they're at least trying to improve the brand.

And if you count Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing, that was a good game.

Even though it was a Mario Kart clone, it did give Sonic a good start this year. Honestly I enjoyed it way more than Modnation Racers.

Sonic and SEGA All Star Racing was fun much better than Modnation but no Mario Kart Wii for me but that wasn't what I was expecting in fact I was surprised it was a solid effort.

Sonic 4 is a good little game if a bit to short but it doesn't matter the game manages to  mix old and new into a Sonic game which is fine and I liked it.

Sonic Colors looks good hopefully he can at least have a good end to the year.

Sonic Free Riders no one really is to intrested in the game and it uses Kinnect it was probably to get on the bandwagon.

So I'd say he hasn't made a massive return but it is the start of a revival.

I am really hoping Sonic Colors is voted nicely. It is this and Epic Mickey that has me reeling. :/

Just stick with the good ones that you played then.

Sonic Labyrinth is another really bad Sonic game and what about Sonic Shuffle.

Sonic's on the mend, not immediatly cured. If Sega gets things right and has more focus on the brand, then we could end up seeing some pretty awesome games that are as good (Maybe even better) than the likes of Colours and such.

I'll break it down into several steps for Sega.

Use controls responsibly. The biggest complaint Sonic Colors took was that the controls were still flighty in places making it unfairly hard, take the time to polish the controls. If Colors sells well enough to garner an HD port then they should take that opportunity to tighten up the controls for that release.

Take your time. While Colors is well received, Sega still only took two years to work on it. Imagine if they had an extra year, they could've tweaked it even more, added a better multiplayer mode, more levels and it might have been the great comeback instead of just really good.

Stop obsessing with Story. One major problem with modern games is they design the story first then make gameplay. This is a major no no. Design the gameplay first then work up a story. Hence why Nintendo games are so good. They design a new gameplay mechanic then work on a story.

Innovation not gimmicks. Swords and werehogs and crap are not innovation. They're just gimmicks. Innovation is taking an existing formula and building on it to make a familar experience feel new. This is the hardest thing for devs to do. Too much change will alienate gamers (see Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts) and too little will make them bored. Finding this balance is the hardest thing to do in a long running series.

Don't worry about length: It's funny how we used to talk about progress in games as "Wow I got to level..." and now it's more like "I put ... hours into this game." In the past we were fine with games being short because they had higher replay value and because of this, this lead to year of Sega padding Sonic games with fluff and gimmicks no one liked. Wanding around doing fetch quests, replaying levels as other characters or stuff like the werehog that drug on forever. Colors from what I can tell isn't a long game but it has replay value, that's where it counts and that will keep it out of the used bin much longer.

I do agree with you though I didn't mine playing as the Werehog since I grew up playing beat em up games.

Most beat em up games I played are better than that.
