There's only two actual Mario platformers (not counting RPGs, Party, Sports or racing games) where you didn't just play as Mario.
Super Mario Bros. 2: This wasn't even an actual Mario game if you know the backstory. The Japanese SMB2 was thought to be too hard for stupid American audiences so Miyamoto's other game Doki Doki Panic was revamped and put in Toad, Luigi and Peach but here's the thing YOU WEREN"T FORCED TO PLAY AS THEM. You could play that entire game as Mario if you liked, plus they all controlled the same way with just variations in the jumping, running and throwing abilities.
Super Paper Mario: It plays more like a platformer than an RPG and this one allows you to switch between Mario, Peach, Bowser and Luigi but you still spent the majority of the game as Mario because of his flipping technique.
I will forgive Black Knight for not forcing us to play as the friends. That's what made the Sonic Advance series good. But they still might pull a trick in that you can just play as Sonic, but then throw in that "if you want to see the final ending you have to play as everyone crap" that started way back in Sonic Adventure.
One last thing, the MAIN Mario games never:
You never had to fish for a frog.
You never had to slog along in a clunky mech.
You never had to search for hours with innacurate radar finding stupid sh--.
And most of all, no Mario character ever picked up a gun and started cursing and acting like an angst c---!
Also the thing some of you idiot Sonic fans don't seem to grasp is that SONIC IS ABOUT SPEED!! The funnest part of Sonic games is running fast through a great platforming level. The slower elements would've been ok but they're not that fun and I'm willing to bet if these recent games didn't have Sonic in them, you'd probably agree.
