There a special community who created Sonic theme content for games... such as levels, character models and even Total conversation mod. This also includes custom content which allows users to use the current content in video games and re arrange them into the sonic themes that you would see in sonic games.

Biglittle Planet (originally posted in another thread by kbaliy)

UT3 UT2D level Green Hill Zone

Sonic Model

Ashura Dark Reign mod...

loads and loads more.

That's cool. If you go to the Spore site you'll find a search feature and enter Sonic and you'll also see many people (myself included) who made Spore versions of Sonic and the rest of his friends.

It's rather funny in Spore too, to make Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and others in Creature Creator than see them walking around in your world. In the Tribal stage I ended up hunting a pack of wild Tails and Shades and in the Creature stage I extincted the Knuckledon.

The spore versions look weird, however they did a good job on the creature. The Spore elements isn't exactly a mod is it? more like a creation process already part of the game, unless you add something in the game.. like a model... then you would say you modify the game contents (i'm unsure if you can do that in BigLittle Planet)

The modding community gets programs to work with, like 3D Studio Max or UnrealEd and put all the content together to make another game or content.

Some of the content is already ripped from other games... like Sonic Heroes and they import it into another engine and add the codes to make the game or content work in a totally different way from the content in the same game.

And we can't forget about this interesting odditiy. Now it's easy to upload old 2D sprites and backgrounds and slap Sonic into Mario's old 2D levels but it's a lot tougher to place a 3D Sonic in 3D Mario levels.
